From the Franco Zeffirelli autobiography. For those who may be unfamiliar with him, he directed Endless Love, The Champ, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet, the latter of which Bill claims he was offered the male lead. (more on that in a bit)
On Jan 17, 1969, he was involved in an auto accident which shattered the bones in his right cheek. You can read all this below, but I want to mention that the method for fixing his face involved opening a passage through the roof of his mouth, and placing a special type of filler underneath his shattered cheek bones, using a mold made from the left side of his face. The idea here was to have the bones knit in a way to perfectly reflect the shape of the mold. Oh and his doctor was a British Surgeon named Sir Terance Ward, and this method was his own invention.
This begs the question: Could this method be used in a controlled manner, breaking the cheekbones and then molding the facial contours in any way you could wish? I also wonder who is this "Sir Terance"..
After he discusses the Surgery, he talks of wanting to use the Beatles in "Brother Sister Sun Moon", the life of St. Francis. They were indeed offered some roles, whether Paul was offered the role of St Francis, or if he had him in mind, he doesn't say. But, one thing I can tell you, by his description of the process of casting Romeo and Juliet elsewhere in the book, it's clear that Paul (or Bill) was not offered the role, or was it even considered. Also notable, if he met them in 1965, and if the Francie Schwartz story is to believed, where she mentions he was in the studio during the recording of "Don't Pass Me By", then he has met "both"..
Hope you find this interesting..
