In my Italian forum (ilras.proboards.com), a member, blaureuter, pointed out that there is something strange in this picture taken in 1978 during the "back to the egg" studio session.
Who's the guy with the guitar? It would be toooo much if it was HIM but I'm still curious to know his identity.
Even if he's playing right-handed that isn't so important... Maybe he found Danny Laine's one and tried it.
Sir Paul is off to the left messing with the large stringed instrument. Denny is playing the piano of course, and the two on the right, while we can't see their faces, would seem to be Laurence Juber and Steve Holly. The only remaining member of Wings is Linda, and of course she's nowhere to be seen. Certainly does pose the question as to who is that guy.
There a number of musicians that are credited on the Back To The Egg CD, I'm pretty sure that was due to the "Rockestra" event, where they got together and recorded.

Oh and thanks for reminding me about your forum, have to use Google translate, but there are some interesting posts there.

IMHO it's hard to believe that they could do it in front of everyone but let me say that, from this point of view, that guy looks more "paulish" than Sir Paul does

the year is the same: depends on which month of 1978 the studio session took place. I also would like to check how did he look in 1977, just to see if he already had long hair.
ps: must see also 1979 ones (he could have cut it, not let it grow)

Just to throw some more info on the table, the following is all from Bill Harry's "The Paul Mccartney Encyclopedia".
Lawrence Juber joined Wings in the studio on May 5, 1978 to record 'Same Time Next Year'. He was present for pretty much all the recordings for Back to the Egg, including 'My Baby's Request'. He "officially" joined in June of 1978, along with Steve Holly.
As for the recording of the song in question, recording for it and 'Getting Closer' commenced on October 10, 1978.

I think you have provided the Rose-etta Stone for all of us.
I don't think that the guy playing guitar in this photo is a slam dunk Paul.
Having said that though, I certainly think that if the photo didn't contain the Paul playing stand-up bass, then we all just would have assumed that the guitar player was Paul.
In Brady Bunch lingo, HE FITS THE SUIT.
;D
Thanks for posting this, il ras!
You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat. Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat. Ain't it hard when you discovered that. He really wasn't where it's at. After he took from you everything he could steal.

Well, you know, you could try to ask the man himself--Lawrence Juber. Just go to his website, send him the photo and ask him for the identification of the man in question?
I saw that video on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0Uwu0oO9Qw It does look like Paul and what I found curious was that Paul(?) seems nervous in the video, looking over his shoulder, and when he finishes the song a man walks up to him and they have some sort of discussion. ??
The video is really too out of focus to identify it as George Martin. The man's hair in the video looks different from Martin's and his head seems rounder than Martin's.
In the relatively black and white version I posted you can see the man more clearly, and his voice, mannerisms, and general appearance convince me that Il ras is right; it is George Martin. Interesting that Paul says "yeah, forgot the format" as if he was 'out of practice' in the studio; as if he had been away for a while.
Yeah, the guys with their heads down are definitely Holly and Juber. What the hell?
Remember, James Paul would have twelve to thirteen years on him at this point. We have what may be a picture of him in 1968. We have what may be a picture of him in the early-to-mid '80s. This might be the first "bridge" we have for the '70s, and I think his appearance would fit that.
Still, he's playing right handed. Unless the entire picture is reversed, then it's not him.
The sun was shining on the sea, Shining with all his might: He did his very best to make The billows smooth and bright-- And this was odd, because it was The middle of the night.
The moon was shining sulkily, Because she thought the sun Had got no business to be there After the day was done-- "It's very rude of him," she said, "To come and spoil the fun!"
