The Babalon Working, Rosemary's Baby & Other Tales
A Graphically Symbolic Enacment of the Homunculus/Moonchild Ritual On Celluloid.
ROSEMARY'S BABY
The bloody slaughter on August 9, 1969 of actress Sharon Tate and four others shocked the world that year. The details of the murders are well known, including stabbing Tate's unborn child and smearing the victims' blood on the wall to write 'Helter Skelter' , words which were the title of a Beatles song written one year after the Beatles had sparked a revival of interest in the deceased OTO leader Aleister Crowley by placing his photo on the cover of their album, 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'.
Tate was the wife of film director Roman Polanski who had directed 'Rosemary's Baby', a movie about a demonic 'moonchild'. In a secret instruction of the OTO's Ninth Degree, details are given regarding the the creation of a moonchild or homunculus via demonic possession of the fetus following ritualised copulation.
Southern Califonia OTO leader Jack Parsons, whose lodge was deeply tied to Hollywood, had gone to great lengths to create a moonchild in the 1940's 'The Babalon Working'....with L Ron Hubbard (Frater H) as his scryer... numerous abortions were involved in the process. Indeed, 'Rosemary's Baby' could be legitamately viewed as a graphically symbolic enactment of a homunculus ritual on celluloid.
Quote:
In Sex and Rockets, Carter brings a measure of much needed clarity to the life and times of the enigmatic Parsons; an enigma that has been compounded over the years by varying degrees of misinformation and exaggeration as to just who Parsons was, and exactly what he was trying to accomplish with the Babalon Working rituals, performed in part with L. Ron Hubbard, the future founder of Scientology. The end result of the Babalon Working was to birth an elemental being; a 'Moonchild' that--as Crowley stated in his Book of the Law--would be "mightier than all the kings of the Earth."
Carter quotes Crowley successor Kenneth Grant, who wrote, "The Babalon Working began...just prior to the wave of unexplained aerial phenomena now recalled as the 'Great Flying Saucer Flap'. Parsons opened a door and something flew in." Carter also suggests it mighthave been the atomic bomb that opened this door between dimensions. He then further illustrates the importance of the year 1947, which ended the first stage of the Babalon Working, as Parsons and Hubbard parted ways amid a cloud of turmoil. 1947 was the year that the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. In that very same year, Israel became a nation state, the transistor was invented and the sound barrier broken. Last, but certainly not least, the Modern Age of UFO's flew into view with the Kenneth Arnold sightings, followed not long after by the alleged saucer crash in Roswell, New Mexico. 1947 was also the year the Great Beast, Aleister Crowley died.
Grant continues Re: The IX degree.
"Having lost confidence in women, Parsons decided to attract an Elemental Spirit to take Betty's place..." (Hubbard had stolen her from Parsons) These spirits are called Elementals because of their association with the four elements of the ancients. To summon one requires a large amount of magical energy, the kind generated by an 8th Degree working. The practice of the 8th Degree is a solo sexual rite.
In the course of a letter in January 1950, Parsons drew attention to an interesting similarity. In the course of the Babalon Working, the rituals included the Enochian Call of the Seventh Aire. This was in line with a passage in "LIBER 49", where Parsons was urged to "...seek me in the Seventh Aire". Parsons continued:
"I have the text of Dee's skrying in the Seventh Aire, which as he said "...so terrified me that, beseeching God to have mercy upon me, I finally answer that I will from this day forward meddle no more herein". The voice, speaking from Kelly, resulted in a sinister dissociation of Kelly's personality. The parallel with my own Working with Ron, is appalling. After this Kelly robbed Dee, absconded with his wife, and developed a criminal confidence career. (It was Hubbard who absconded with Parsons' girl Betty...and boy did his criminal confidence career take-off.)

Ritual Abortions.
Quote:
L. Ron Hubbard, Jr., is a survivor. His appearance on earth, May 7, 1934, was the result of failed abortion rituals by his father, and Ron, after only six and a half months in the womb and at 2.2 pounds entered the world. His mother, Margeret ("Polly") Grubb, was to have one more child, Catherine May, before her husband ditched her in 1946 to enter into a bigamous marnage with Sarah Northrup. A half sister, Alexis Valerie, survived that union. Soon after that, the founder of Scientology married Mary Sue Whipp, the current Mrs. L. Ron Hubbard, Sr., who at this writing is serving four years in federal prison for stealing government documents. There were four childrens: Diana and Quentin, who died under mysterious circumstances in 1976; Arthur, who has been missing for several years; and Suzette.
Ron Jr. says that he remembers much of his childhood. He claims to recall, at six years, a vivid scene of his father performing an abortion ritual on his mother with a coat hanger. He remembers that when he was ten years old, his father, in an attempt to get his son in tune with his black-magic worship, laced the young hubbard's bubble gum with phenobarbital. Drugs were an important part of Ron Jr.'s growing up, as his father believed that they were the best way to get closer to Satan --the Antichrist of black magic.
Ron Jr. also recalls a hard-drinking, drug-abusing father who would mistreat his mother and other women, but who, when, under the influence, would delight in telling his son all of his exploits. Finally, Ron Jr. remembers his father as a "broke science-fiction writer" who espoused that the road to riches and glory lay in selling religion to the masses.
Penthouse: Did he write the book(DIANETICS) off the top of his head? Did he do any real research?
Hubbard: No research at all. When he has answered that question over the years, his answer has changed according to which biography he was writing. Sometimes he used to write a new biography every week. He usually said that he had put thirty years of research into the book. But no, he did not. What he did, reaily, was take bits and pieces from other people and put them together in a blender and stir them all up --and out came Dianetics! All the examples in the book --some 200 "real-life experiences" --were just the result of his obsessions with abortions and unconscious states... In fact, the vast majority of those incidents were invented off the top of his head. The rest stem from his own secret life, which was deeply involved in the occult and black-magic. That involvement goes back to when he was sixteen, living in Washington. D.C. He got hold of the book by Alistair Crowley called The Book of Law. He was very interested in several things that were the creation of what some people call the Moon Child. It was basically an attempt to create an immaculate conception --except by Satan rather than by God. Another important idea was the creation of what they call embryo implants --of getting a satanic or demonic spirit to inhabit the body of a fetus. This would come about as a result of black-magic rituals, which included the use of hypnosis, drugs, and other dangerous and destructive practices. One of the important things was to destroy the evidence if you failed at this immaculate conception. That's how my father became obsessed with abortions. I have a memory of this that goes back to when I was six years old. It is certainly a problem for my father and for Scientology that I rememoer this. It was around 1939, 1940, that I watched my father doing something to my mother. She was lying on the bed and he was sitting on her, facing her feet. He had a coat hanger in his hand. There was blood all over the place. I remember my father shouting at me. "Go back to bed!" A little while later a doctor came and took her off to the hospital. She didn't talk about it for quite a number of years. Neither did my father.
Penthouse: He was trying to perform an abortion?
Hubbard: According to him and my mother, he tried to do it with me. I was born at six and a half months and weighed two pounds, two ounces. I mean, I wasn't born: this is what came out as a result of their attempt to abort me. It happened during a night of partying --he got involved in trying to do a black-magic number. Also, I've got to complete this by saying that he thought of himself as the Beast 666 incarnate.
Penthouse: The devil?
Hubbard: Yes. The Antichrist. Alestair Crowley thought of himself as such. And when Crowley died in 1947, my father then decided that he should wear the cloak of the beast and become the most powerful being in the universe.
Penthouse: You were sixteen years old at that time. What did you believe in?
Hubbard: I believed in Satanism. There was no other religion in the house! Scientology and black magic. What a lot of people don't realize is that Scientology is black magic that is just spread out over a long time period. To perform black magic generally takes a few hours or, at most, a few weeks. But in Scientology it's stretched out over a lifetime, and so you don't see it. Black magic is the inner core of Scientology --and it is probably the only part of Scientology that really works. Also, you've got to realize that my father did not worship Satan. He thought he was Satan. He was one with Satan. He had a direct pipeline of communication and power with him. My father wouldn't have worshiped anything. I mean, when you think you're the most powerful being in the universe, you have no respect for anything, let alone worship.
Many books have been written about the 'Manson murders', blaming Manson's views on white racism and too many drug trips. His involvement with the Solar Lodge, however, is less well known. The successor to Parsons' Agape Lodge in Pasadena was located in southern California and numbered among its adherents a young man named Charles Manson. OTO leader Grady McMurty contacted the FBI following Manson's arrest, explaining for the record that the lodge in which Manson had been initiated was not recognized by the OTO. .....hhhhmmmmm? (nb..this is very much a contentious issue)
John Whiteside Parsons (who some claim could be descended form Irish aristocracy the Earl of Rosse Richard Parsons, founder of the Irish Hellfire Club) was the OTO leader of the Agape Lodge in California. He was the inventor of jet-assisted takeoff (JATO), the founder of Aerojet Corp. and the co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
Author of instrumental research behind both the US space program and Allied military victories during WWII, Parsons considered himself the 'AntiChrist Belarion'. He engaged in the homsexual rape of a 16 yr old boy in 1942. The Pasadena police dismissed the charges and reported that the OTO was essentially "an organisation dedicated to religious and philosophical speculation, with respectable members such as a Pasadena bank president, doctors, lawyers and Hollywood actors."
In "Alchemical Conspiracy and the Death of the West" Michael Hoffman writes of Parsons. Hoffman tells us that the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) had a temple on nearby Mount Palomar. The local Indians regarded the mountain as holy. Hoffman says, "The OTO believed that Palomar was the sexual chakra of the Earth." Parsons commuted regularly between Palomar and Pasadena. The Mount Palomar Observatory opened in 1949. Smith probably consecrated his temple on Palomar soon after his move to California in 1930, before the Observatory was planned.
OTO sex and death rituals are performed performed across the United States, including - according to the late James Shelby Downard - Secret Service and FBI personnel at the Mount Palomar Observatory, who performed sex rites with Downard's estranged wife, Anne...while immersed in light from the star Sirius in the constellation Canis Major, beamed through the 200-inch Palomar telescope.
Hoffman has also noted that some of the old OTO ritual sites in California...cropped up in the Hillside Strangler case as disposal sites for some of the bodies.
Palomar lies just minutes north of the 33rd parallel. This is significant because 33 is an important number in Masonic symbolism. It is the number of the highest grade of the Scottish Rite. It is also the number of years Christ walked on the earth. Hoffman mentions the 33 bones of the human spinal cord. This brings to mind kundalini yoga. Crowley's OTO was a quasi-masonic order. The higher grades show esoteric Hindu influences of a sexual nature. (I personally don't subscribe to the idea that the influence is Hindu)
Parsons' Jet Propulsion Lab grew out of the Harry Guggenheim-funded, Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT). According to Michael A Hoffman II: GALCIT had been run by the 'Hungarian-Jewish scientist Professor Theodore von Karman, who claimed to be a direct descendant of Rabbi Judah Loew'. Rabbi Loew was the tutor of Dr John Dee, producer of the Enochian system, Rabbi Loew is most famous , however, for the legend that he succeeded in creating artificial life, the Kabbalistic entity known as the Golem, a Gentile destroying monster. The instructions for making a Golem are contained in the Sefer Yetzirah, the oldest text of the Kabbalah.
Quote:
The most famous golem narrative involves Rabbi Judah Loew the Maharal of Prague, a 16th century rabbi. He is reported to have created a golem to defend the Prague ghetto of Josefov from Anti-Semitic attacks. The story of the Golem first appeared in print in 1847 in a collection of Jewish tales entitled Galerie der Sippurim, published by Wolf Pascheles of Prague. About sixty years later, a fictional account was published by Yudl Rosenberg (1909).
According to the legend, the Emperor made an edict proclaiming that the Jews in Prague were to be either expelled or killed (depending on the version of the story). A golem could be made of clay from the banks of the Vltava river in Prague. Following the prescribed rituals, the Rabbi built the Golem and made him come to life by reciting special incantations in Hebrew. The Rabbi's intention was to have the Golem protect the Jewish community from harm. As Rabbi Loew's Golem grew bigger, he also became more violent and started killing the Gentiles (non-Jews) and spreading fear. Some versions also add that the Golem turns on his creator and attacks either his creator alone or the creator and the Jews as well.
In the face of the strength demonstrated and violence perpetrated by the Golem, the Emperor begs Rabbi Loew to destroy the Golem, and in return he would promise that the persecution of and violence towards the Jews would stop. The Rabbi accepted this offer. To destroy the Golem, he rubbed out the first letter of the word "emet" or "aemaeth" (God's truth) from the golem's forehead to make the Hebrew word "met" or "maeth", meaning death. It was made clear to the Emperor that the Golem of Prague's remains would be stored in a coffin in the attic of the Old-New Synagogue in Prague, and it can be summoned again if needed.
It is said that the body of Rabbi Loew's golem still lies in the genizah of the Old-New Synagogue in Prague. In some documents, the golem was stolen from genizah and entombed in a graveyard in ˇi˛kov. In this very place, the great ˇi˛kovskį tower now stands.
Parson's Agape Lodge was affiliated with many Hollywood writers and actors, including John Carradine, father of David Carradine, drugged out star of 'Kung Fu' and the cinematic blood-geyser 'Kill Bill'. The elder Carradine read one of Crowley's poems at the inauguration of Agape Lodge No.2 in 1935. Dennis Hopper acted with Parsons' Scarlett Women Marjorie Cameron, who also knew Dean Stockwell.
Cameron...right pic from Kenneth Anger's (a self appointed Crowley heir based in Hollywood...who was connected to Manson associate Bobby Beausoliel....Anger was rumoured to have been his one time lover & room mate....As well as Anger being connected to LaVey* and his expanding church of Satan.) Inauguration of the Pleasuredome...as the Scarlett Woman....life immitating art or vice-versa?
* LaVey had apparently formed a close association with Roman Polanski shortly before the murders, when he served as the technical consultant for Polanski on his film Rosemary's Baby, in which he also made a (often disputed) cameo appearance as Satan.
Parsons, who frequented a Communist cell, attempted to produce a 'moonchild' or demonic homunculus in the womb of his Scarlett Woman....Marjorie Cameron, the 'Maenad' referenced in the Hymn to Pan. (Crowley's sodomite poem)
Quote:
From Hymn to Pan...

good ol' sodomite sex magick....of the OTO 11th degree.
Parsons crowning achievement involved the 'Mannikin' of Crowley's fevered dream. According to occult investigators James Shelby Downard and William N Grimstad, on July 16 1945 at the Trinity Site in New Mexico, the first atomic bomb explosion was accompanied by a huge steel 'bottle' code-named 'Jumbo', which weighed nearly one-half million pounds. Jumbo was 25 feet long and 12 feet in diameter: it had been custom built at an eastern steel mill and expensively shipped by a 64 wheeler trailer. The government has never given a remotely reasonable explanation for Jumbo.
Downard believed that Jumbo contained what Crowley had called 'The Mannikin' - an inaminate body which was inundated with nuclear energy, thus producing a real homunculus, a goal of medieval alchemy.
Another major alchemical goal being....The Creation and Destruction of Primordial Matter...which could've arguably have been achieved with this atomic bomb.
"Early in this century a Freemason named Peter Kern was ordered to build a highly symbolic 'Gate of Death' at a key point on the ancient Jornada del muerto trail. It was known as the Gate with a Thousand Doors. At the front of this gate Kern was ceremonially murdered (decapitated) by a hooded executioner.
Quote:
The Gate Of A Thousand Doors. It's creator, Peter Kern, a turn of the Twentieth Century Mason, created it both as an entrance to the village of his namesake, Kern Place, which is easily read across the gate, as well as the creation of a symbolic and metaphorical gateway into death. The gate also marks the entrance to a strip of land known as the Jornada Del Muerto, or Journey Of The Dead Man, near El Paso in the extreme west of Texas. It is also alleged that its creator was also ritualistically beheaded beneath it. This image is the element which represents JFK and his assassination in the public eye which led to him being hailed as the Second Christ, through his death in the spotlight. It is believed that JFK ritualistically passed under the gate and through the Jornada Del Muerto as part of a freemasonic rite.
Quote:
To clarify any unnecessary rumours...Peter Kern, a turn-of-the-century Mason built a ceremonial entrance to his land to represent an esoteric gateway to death. This is the Jornada del Muerto, the journey of the dead man. Some believe that JFK passed through here on his way to Trinity and on to Dealy Plaza. It is located near El Paso. To my knowledge, it has no affiliation with Nazis nor do I CONDONE or PROMOTE any such beliefs. This is merely a mystical and bizarre piece of architecture I discovered on my quest for knowledge. If you look deeper, you will see its connection to Adam Kadmon as well. MARILYN MANSON
The Gate Of Death (note Kern is standing next to the pillar on the left)
"The are 33 segments in the human spinal column which according to occult lore is the vehicle of the fiery ascent of the Kundalini serpent force which resides in the human body. 33 is the highest degree of Scottish Rite Freemasonry. The Creation and Destruction of Primordial Matter occurred exactly on the Trinity Site, the 'Place of Fire,' with the explosion of the first atomic bomb, culminating untold thousands of years of Alchemical speculation and practise."
Trinity Site was chosen as the test site. The secluded Jornada del Muerto was perfect as it provided isolation for secrecy and safety, but was still close to Los Alamos.
Jornada del Muerto....perfect mystical toponomy meaning appropriately....Journey of the Dead Man.
The spot is now marked with an obligatory Osirian penis/obelisk.
Every year on Halloween, JPL acknowledges Parsons as one of its five founders with a memorial of sorts, using mannequins in a "Nativity Scene" that's on display behind the visitor center.
Although status as the 'Antichrist Belarion' and leadership role in the California OTO was known to the US government, Jack Parsons had no problem securing a top secret security clearance and finding employment with the Los Angeles Police Dept, the Los Angeles Superior Court, the US Army & Navy and the National Defense Research Council. From October, 1948 until June, 1950...Parsons transferred secret documents relating to US rocket and defense technology to the Israelis. He was caught by personnel from the Propulsion and Research Development Laboratory of Hughes Aircraft, but the US Attorney declined to prosecute Parsons for treason or espionage after intervention from J Edgar Hoover.
Parsons' ties to the world of science fiction did not stop with L Ron Hubbard: his influence on Ray Bradbury and Robert Heinlein is well known in science fiction circles. Parsons himself was inspired by sci-fi writer Jack Williamson writer of Darker Than You Think.

Never allow anyone the luxury of assuming that because the dead and deadening scenery of the American city-of-dreadful-night is so utterly devoid of mystery, so thoroughly flat-footed, sterile and infantile, so burdened with the illusory gloss of "baseball-hot dogs-apple-pie-and-Chevrolet" that it is somehow outside the psycho-sexual domain.
I don't know if there's a connection with Mr. Kern, but his gate reminded me of this one that Iameye posted.

limpit "Hadal zone" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadal_Zone (Greek for "unseen") or Hadopelagic zone is the delineation for the deepest trenches in the ocean. This zone is found from a depth of around 6,000 meters (20,000 ft) to the bottom of the ocean. Hadal means "like Hades".

"The submarine Keller was in is probably the world's most famous deep-sea submersible. Called Alvin by its handlers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the submersible is built to withstand ocean pressures down to nearly 15,000 feet. Ever since it was built in 1964, scientists have used it to explore some of the deepest regions of the sea. In 1986, Alvin made history when it located the wreck of the Titanic ocean liner, lost in 1912 when it struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland. On this particular cruise, Keller is studying the geology of the Patton seamount, a 10,000-foot extinct volcano in the central Gulf of Alaska, about 200 miles southeast of Kodiak Island. Although there to learn how the volcano formed, he was amazed by the variety of creatures living on the seamount's slopes. http://seagrant.uaf.edu/news/01ASJ/10.05.01seamounts.html
KELLER: "When you hit the bottom and they turn on the lights, it's just astonishing how much there is around you. You see rocky outcroppings and there's life everywhere—sponges and sea stars. You're just overwhelmed by how much there is to see and you're trying to take it all in. It's pitch black all the time and only a few degrees above freezing. It's under phenomenal pressure from the depth. And yet there's so much life that it's just amazing. And I'm not even a biologist."

A destination to find mistletoe for sure would be the valley below the town of Wadi al Sear, in the surrounding of the spring, look for the shady and humid hillsides. From afar mistletoe appears as dense globes of warm dark-green and in this time of the year with red berries.
If you find mistletoe on fruit trees in fields ask the locals for permission to gather some, usually besides being surprised of your request, they would be grateful as they see this plant as an infection to their trees.
Beware of climbing on decayed branches, and do not attempt any medical application using a homemade preparation of this plant as it is reported in some references as being toxic.
On a fine day the villagers gathered around. There was one oak tree that was different than all other trees in the fields, this was the holly one, the one that holds powers within any of its branches and ability to change earthly fate within its vicinity.
The priest had prepared himself since the early morning, and with an air of holiness he walked up the fields where the community gathered, the village of peasant read-roofed houses was getting farer below, and behind it, the Mediterranean shimmered in cobalt blue.
Climbing the tee, the white-robed priest became a dot of utmost contrast to the rest of the moss-ridden branches enveloped in moist and mushroom smelling air. Up on one side-branch there was a ball of foliage, the only green amidst naked winter branches dormant for the season. The whole scene was tense, and as the indoor cleric struggles with the tree-climbing, eyes of the elders get fixed on him while children sneakily giggle at the slightest sound of a cracking branch.
With a theatrical act, engulfed in a divine aura, the priest pulls out of his robe a sickle of gold. He reaches for the green globe while the sickle's tremors throws golden reflections on people below. As parts of the brittle and dens growth fall down, two alter boys catch the falling plant in a white cloth before touching the ground. Up in the tree, the priest wraps good chunks of the holly growth in white cloth, and prepares for a descending that now appeared to be more difficult. Below the tree the plant gets broken into smaller pieces by the priest and distributed to all present.
Mistletoe is Europe's number one myth plant; it is surrounded by countless variations of stories that seem to have roots in pre-Christianity folk culture.
“Viscum cruciatum” its scientific name, for the species that has red berries, and the one that is most common in Jordan, can be translated to ( Viscum = related to internal organs, gluey and cruciatum = crucified or tortured). Both words give a good reference to its nature and its cultural connotation. In Jordan it spreads in moist fields, on oak, olive, almond and other trees along the mountain areas from Um Qais in the north to Dana in the south. In fact Jordan has the southernmost line of this plant that continues northwards into Europe. The Arabic names of mistletoe include “Hadal- (in Lebanon) and Dabag -which means “sticky”- in Jordan.
Some of the strongest story-lines of this plant is centered on the Myth of the Norse god Balder, who is said to have been slain by a branch of mistletoe and burnt in a great fire. Since untraceable times, mistletoe has been the object of superstitious veneration in Europe. Pliny mentions in great details its worship as being “sacred only if it grows on oak…, a remedy against all poison…., should be gathered without the use of iron, and not to be allowed to touch the earth”. There is also a clear connection between the harvest of this plant and the moon, as its power is most potent when picked according to the observation of the moon, after the first or fifth day.
In some parts of Europe it is said that for this plant to have any power, it must be cut in unusual way, shot down with an arrow or knocked down with stones, on specific day before the new moon, and to catch it with the left hand as it falls. Mistletoe, growing as globes on deciduous branches, was believed to have been produced by a flash of lightening, and thus its good effect to protect against lightening and conflagration in general. It opens all locks and is efficient against sorcery and witchcraft.
Away from superstitious beliefs, mistletoe has been used in medicine to prove much of its older fame as “all healer”. The white-berried mistletoe (Viscum album) has been documented as a traditional treatment for diabetes and high blood pressure. In one experiment, children living in areas exposed to the radiation fallout from Chernobyl with recurrent respiratory infections were treated with Viscum album, resulting in normalization. Mistletoe extracts represent the most important unorthodox oncology therapy in Germany. Ethnobotanical surveys carried out in Palestine showed the use of this plant to treat skin diseases and prostate cancer. “Good in almost every disease” this holly plant is seen a palnt fallen from the sky, a gift from the Divinity. This belief is not very far from the truth as the plant actually falls from above, not from heavens but from the intestines of birds. Mistletoe has an interesting spreading agenda. It produces seeds in berries attractive to the birds. The inner sees is coated with a tough layer of extremely sticky material that keeps its property through the short digestive system of the bird. Inside the bird, the seeds start germinating with the help of the worm, moist and acrid conditions. As the bird drops the seeds on branches, the sticky coating helps to fasten them on the bark and forms a conduit through which the seeds penetrate their roots into the host tree robbing it from its water and nutrients. While mistletoe is a parasite on other trees, and sometimes on its awn kind, it has a symbiotic relationship with birds, in which they both have mastered an interdependent living strategy.
When mistletoe dries, its color turns gold; it becomes a good Christmas decoration, particularly above doorways where it reminds us to continue the tradition of “the kiss under the mistletoe”.

more hades stuff:
The significance of the whale in Christian symbolism is strongly linked to the biblical story of Jonah. This prophet balked at being sent by the Lord to warn the wicked gentile city of Nineveh about the judgments soon to come upon them. Jonah boarded a ship hoping to escape the Lord's command by sea. Then a storm arose and the sailors cast lots to determine who's sins were the cause of their misfortune. The lot fell to Jonah who was promptly thrown overboard to appease the gods. Immediately, the sea was calmed. God sent a "great fish," commonly believed to be a whale, to swallow Jonah lest His prophet drown. After three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, Jonah repented of his disobedience and agreed to prophesy to the city of Nineveh. He was then vomited on to a shore not far from his destination (Jonah 1-2). This, of course, may have seemed rather undignified to Jonah at the time, but he was in good company; many countries such as Vietnam and Japan have legends about heroes and gods being cast ashore by whales and other creatures or vehicles of the sea.
Throughout most of history, paintings of Jonah's whale have suffered from the artist's unfamiliarity with the sea creature. In pictures it often looks rather like a dolphin, a dragon, or a large scraggly fish and may even have plants growing on it. Since Jonah described his experience as being in the "Belly of Sheol" and the "pit," the whale has been associated with Hell, Hades, death, and the grave (Jonah 2:2-6). Its jaws, are symbolic of the gates of Hell.
Since a living man was believed to be able to come forth from it, the belly of a whale became symbolic of the womb, the body, and rebirth. Jesus made the whale a symbol of His Resurrection when he told the scribes and Pharisees, that the only sign their wicked generation would receive was that of Jonah; "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Mt 12:40).
The whale also became associated with the biblical Leviathan and hence with the Devil, chaos, and the enemies of Israel. Some believe that Jonah's fish was Leviathan; others that it was attacked by Leviathan who was driven off by Jonah. The destruction of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea is described as God's breaking of the heads of Leviathan and throwing their bodies as food to the people of the wilderness (Ps 74:14). However, some people take this same passage literally, believing that the flesh of Leviathan was thrown into the desert for wandering Arabs to feast upon. Jewish legend says that there is only one Leviathan, the female having been killed to create clothing for Adam and Eve. In the Day of the Lord, either Gabriel, Jonah, or Behemoth will kill Leviathan and serve him to the righteous at the Messianic banquet. When Job curses the day of his birth, he mentions "those who are ready to arouse Leviathan," or the forces of chaos (Job 3:8). The Lord demonstrates His superiority over humans to Job by pointing out that He alone can subdue the mighty Leviathan (Job 41). Although He created and feeds Leviathan, He will, on the Day of Judgment, slay him (Ps 104:26-27; Is 27:1).
Ancient sea legends and Medieval bestiaries claimed that the whale was as big as an island and grew bushes on its backside. It was said that mariners, mistaking the creature for land, would anchor their ships to its side, come ashore, and light fires. The beast, feeling the heat of the fires would plunge into the sea taking hapless crews and ships to their watery deaths. These whale legends became a warning against the wiles, cunning, and traps of the Devil who drags unsuspecting sinners down to Hell. In other traditions, the beneficent whale or whale-spirit guided lost fishermen and sailors to familiar waters, prevented shipwrecks, and conducted souls to their final abodes.

Blundering diplomats destroy $US10m whale fossil
Posted Mon Aug 27, 2007 7:33am AEST
European diplomats in four-wheel drives have caused millions of dollars worth of damage to a fossilized whale lying for millions of years in the Egyptian desert, a security source said.
"Whale Valley officals have informed the authorities that people from two diplomatic corps vehicles destroyed the fossil," the source told AFP after the destruction was discovered around 150 kilometres south of Cairo.
Two cars drove into the protected area on Friday and then refused to stop when asked to do so by wardens who nevertheless got the vehicles' registration numbers which the source said were from "a European country."
1994 following a two-year postdoctoral appointment at the Smithsonian Institution's Division of Mollusks, I went to work at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). In my search for "deep-water" (bathyal and abyssal) mollusks on the shelves of the University's Marine Invertebrate Museum, I ran into several big five-gallon jars, all filled to the rim with pieces of wood, seagrass blades, seeds of land plants and, curiously enough, coarse chunks of rusty metal that looked like the solidified remains of molten lava. All of that was immersed in alcohol and, after almost 30 years of maceration, the concoction had turned into a solution the color of dark tea.
As I started to empty the contents of the big jars onto sorting trays, the key to the mystery appeared in the form of little tags with capital letters and numbers. The University of Miami station "numbers" are always preceded by one or two initials. The letters stand for the names of their now legendary research vessels; the numbers represent stations. Their well-kept station records disclosed all the information I needed: location, including latitude and longitude, dates, depths, personnel working on board, kind of gear used (mostly big deep-sea trawls), all indicating exactly in what part of the world's oceans the samples were obtained. The pickled plant material came from the floors of the Cayman and Puerto Rico trenches, in the Caribbean region! As I carefully sorted through the alcohol-preserved plant material under the microscope, I finally found what I was so eagerly looking for: small, white, yellowish, or brown limpets, with a maximum size of about a quarter-of-inch in length. And what a surprise! According to the station records of R/V Gilliss, the material from station GS-109 in the Puerto Rico Trench, a trawl haul obtained at 8595 meters (28,000 feet) and yielding many limpet specimens, came from near the deepest spot in the Atlantic Ocean! Although shallower than the Marianas Trench, the Puerto Rico Trench is as impressively deep as Mount Everest is high.
The Cayman and Puerto Rico trenches basically represent tectonic plate boundaries, or areas of the ocean floor where the gigantic individual plates that cover the Earth's surface are in contact, colliding or sliding past each other. As a result, earthquakes and volcanic activity abound at and near trench areas. Submarine volcanic activity produces the rusty, metallic nodules I found inside the jars. These are usually blends of iron, manganese, and other minerals.
Trenches are frequently close to tropical islands, and there is steady accumulation of plant debris falling from these nearby land, mangrove, and seagrass environments onto the trench floors. It is by a fortuitous combination of circumstances that herbivorous hadal limpets like the ones I had found are furnished with a permanent supply of plant food. Mollusks living in the less-populated, shallower abyssal zone (between 3500 and 6000 meters, or 11,500 and 20,000 feet), must depend upon the "rain" of occasional fish carcasses and other animal debris falling from the upper layers of the water column (in the case of scavenger species), or upon random encounters with prey (in the case of predators). So it seems somehow ironic that mollusks living in the very deepest parts of the oceans must rely on food coming directly from land or from very shallow water areas! That situation represents a kind of "short circuit" in the classic ecological model for deep-sea food webs. Most descriptions of deep-sea food-webs involve a large number of feeding levels based on the large physical distance separating primary producers (plants, which are absent in the dark deep-sea) from predators and scavengers, and the absence of herbivore groups such as keyhole and true limpets.
After a couple of years of studies, and with the help of my colleague, M.G. Harasewych, curator of mollusks at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and, like myself, also deeply (!) involved with this type of mollusk, I prepared a manuscript summarizing the results of our research. The work we did was funded in part by a 1995 COA Research Grant Award I received. All limpets found at the RSMAS Museum can be grouped into four species belonging to two different families in the Order Cocculiniformia. The Cocculinidae are Fedikovella caymanensis Moskalev, 1976 and a new species also belonging to a new genus; the Pseudococculinidae are Caymanabyssia spina Moskalev, 1976, and Amphiplica new species.
Pseudococculinidae Amphiplica new species Scale line = 1mm The two named species were first found by Lev Moskalev, from the Russian Academy of Sciences, after extensive field work carried out in the early 1970s by Russian research vessels in the Caribbean Sea. All four species are fully adapted to their ultra-deep-water lifestyles. They lack eyes, for there is no light available for vision; instead, they rely on smell and touch, having batteries of cilia, or miniature tentacles, near or around their mouths. They are equipped with sturdy radulae capable of scraping the hard wood or other plant material. Their shells are covered by very thick periostracums that help protect the calcium carbonate underneath from the chemical attack of acids present in the surrounding water. The organic protein content in their shells is also higher than in other gastropods, a resource that further enhances protection against shell dissolution by acids. Cocculiniform limpets are hermaphroditic, each animal having both female and male reproductive systems. Finding a mate can be difficult in deep-water conditions, and hermaphroditism ensures that when one mating event occurs, two animals are fertilized through mutual cross fertilization, thus increasing the chances for perpetuation of the species.
The ultra-deep-sea limpets certainly compelled me to reevaluate my notions about deep-water mollusks and to stimulate me to research one of the last frontiers of the world's ocean.

Legend of the Giant and the Witch Risin og kellingin
A legend tells how, once upon a time, the giants in Iceland were envious and decided that they wanted the Faroes. So the giant and the witch (his wife in some versions of the story) were sent down to the Faroe Islands to bring them back.
They reached the north-westernmost mountain Eišiskollur, and the giant stayed in the sea while the witch climbed up the mountain with a heavy rope to tie the islands together so that she could push them onto the giant's back. However, when she attached the rope to the mountain and pulled, the northern part of the mountain split. Further attempts were also unsuccessful, and they struggled through the night, but the base of the mountain was firm and they could not move it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nordoy/2401373712/

If the sun shines on a giant or witch, it turns to stone. So it was that as they continued to struggle they didn't notice time passing, and as dawn broke a shaft of sunlight put a stop to their efforts by turning them to stone on the spot. They have stood there ever since, staring longingly across the ocean towards Iceland.

'Tiny Radio Antennas' Under Skin Could Act As Remote Sensors Of Humans' Emotional, Physiological State ScienceDaily (Apr. 29, 2008) — Scientists at the department of Applied Physics of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have discovered a method for remote sensing of the physiological and emotional state of human beings.
Electromagnetic spectrum
The researchers believe the discovery could theoretically help remotely monitor medical patients, evaluate athletic performance, diagnose disease and remotely sense the level of excitation – which could have significant implications for technology in the biomedical engineering, anti-terror and security technology fields. The key is in the surprising shape of human sweat ducts. Professors Yuri Feldman and Aharon Agranat together with Dr. Alexander Puzenko, Dr. Andreas Caduff and PhD student Paul Ben-Ishai have discovered that the human skin is structured as an array of minute antennas that operate in the “Sub Terahertz” frequency range. This discovery is based on investigations of the internal layers of the skin that were undertaken using a new imaging technique called “Optical Coherent Tomography”. Images produced by this technique revealed that the sweat ducts, which are the tubes that lead the sweat from the sweat gland to the surface of the skin, are shaped as tiny coils. Similar helical structures with much larger dimensions have been used widely in as antennas in wireless communication systems. This made the investigators consider the possibility that the sweat ducts could behave like tiny helical antennas as well. In a series of experiments, the team measured the electromagnetic radiation reflected from the palm skin at the frequency range between 75GHz and 110GHz. It was found that the level of the reflected intensity depends strongly on the level of activity of the perspiration system. In particular, it was found that the reflected signal is very different if measured in a subject that was relaxed, and if measured in a subject following intense physical activity.

Og is the name of an object-relational database mapping library used in Nitro and written in Ruby According to several books of the Old Testament, Og (IPA: /ɒg/ or /ɔːg/; meaning "gigantic" - /ʕog/ in Hebrew) was an ancient Amorite king of Bashan who, along with his sons and army, was slain by Joshua and his men at the battle of Edrei (probably modern day Daraa, Syria). Scholars are divided as to the approximate date of Og's overthrow and indeed the conquest of Canaan by Israel, but most postulate c. 1500 or 1200 B.C. as the most likely candidates.
Og, the giant of the Amorites, is equally considered a folk legend, around whom gathered many Jewish legends: according to some traditions he lived to be 3,000 years and strolled behind Noah's ark during the Deluge. In Islamic lore he is referred to as ʕUj ibn ʕUnq, evidently one of the giants mentioned in the Qur'an (jababirat or jabbirun).
Og is mentioned in Jewish Folklore as being alive from the time of Noah up until the time of his death in battle with the Jews. It is also written in the Midrash that he had a special compartment in Noah's Ark just for him.
An Amorite king
Og is first mentioned in the book of Deuteronomy, specifically the 1st and 3rd chapters. He was an Amorite, not unlike his neighbor Sihon of Heshbon, of whom Moses had previously conquered at the battle of Jahaz. He ruled a very considerable and fertile land, which extended from the fork of the Yarmuk river to the undefined basaltic lands of Hauran to the east. Bashan, which contained some "sixty walled cities" with great bars and gates and many unwalled towns, had capitols at Ashtaroth and Edrei in the region of Argob. Being an Amorite, he likely embraced the customs and clothing of his people. Perhaps he stylized the full beard, shaved upper lip, and colorfully woven tunics so accustomed to many Amorite Kings who resided at the ancient center of Mari. His capitol at Ashtaroth was also a worship center to the fertility goddess, and this city is probably modern Tell Ashareh an existing 70-foot mound.
Battle with Israel
According to the account in Numbers 21:33, Og marched toward the people of Israel and pitched the battle at Edrei nearly 18 miles southeast of Ashtaroth where he met their resistance and his ultimate fate. Deut. 3:1-13 mentions the capture of his land by Moses and proclaimed that they slew every man, woman, and child of his cities and took the spoil for their bounty. Evidently the land of Bashan was famous for its prize cattle; oak groves and lions also once roamed the area in ancient times. Og's kingdom was given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh (Num. 21:32-35; Deut. 3:1-13). Og's destruction is chanted in ballads of praise and song in (Ps. 135:11; 136:20) as one of many great victories for the nation of Israel. In the book of Amos 2:9 there seems to be a symbolic reference to Og as "The Amorite" whose height was like the height of the cedars and whose strength was like the oaks. http://www.answers.com/topic/og-king-in-the-old-testament

"Limpets are dominant members of rocky shore communities and are especially adapted to the intertidal zone of rocky coasts, where they are often extremely abundant. Feeding on microscopic algae they “garden” the shore by taming seaweed growth. Limpets feed by rasping at algae with a specially designed structure called a radula. The radula is like a conveyor belt of teeth, strengthened by iron and silica particles, moving over the surface of the rock scraping at the algae. On soft rocks where the limpet scrapes, you can sometimes see clear feeding trails. Limpets feed at high tide, leaving a mucus trail behind them. After feeding the limpet follows chemical cues laid down in the mucus to return to the same starting place, a shallow depression in the rock called a home-scar. Home-scars are created by chemical action and abrasion between the limpet shell and the rock. The shell fits snugly into the depression and helps the limpet to maintain a firm hold on the rock hence the expression “cling like a limpet”.

Iron-sulfur world theory From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The iron-sulfur world theory is a hypothesis for the origin of life advanced by Günter Wächtershäuser, a Munich chemist and patent lawyer, involving forms of iron and sulfur [1] . Wächtershäuser proposes that an early form of metabolism predated genetics. Metabolism here means a cycle of chemical reactions that produce energy in a form that can be harnessed by other processes. The idea is that once a primitive metabolic cycle was established, it began to produce ever more complex compounds. A key idea of the theory is that this early chemistry of life occurred not in bulk solution in the oceans, but on mineral surfaces (e.g. iron pyrites) near deep hydrothermal vents. This was an anaerobic, high-temperature (near 100°C), high-pressure environment. The first 'cells' would have been lipid bubbles on the mineral surfaces. Wächtershäuser has hypothesized a special role for acetic acid, a simple combination of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen found in vinegar. Acetic acid is part of the citric acid cycle that is fundamental to metabolism in cells. Some of the fundamental ideas of the iron-sulfur theory can be summarized in the following brief recipe for life: Boil water. Stir in iron sulfide and nickel sulfide. Bubble in carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide gas. Wait for peptides to form. More technically, Wächtershäuser hypothesized the following steps for producing proteins: Produce acetic acid through metallic ion catalysis. Add carbon to the acetic acid molecule to produce three-carbon pyruvic acid. Add ammonia to form amino acids. Produce peptides and then proteins. Both acetic acid and pyruvic acid are key chemicals in the citric acid cycle. In 1997, Wächtershäuser and Claudia Huber mixed carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, nickel sulfide, and iron sulfide particles at 100°C and demonstrated that amino acids could form.[2] The following year, using the same ingredients, they were able to produce peptides.[3]

tubal cain
According to Genesis 4:22, ``instructor of every artificer in brass and iron.''
In the sacred texts of the Latter Day Saint movement, Master Mahan is a title assumed first by Cain and later by his descendant Lamech. The title indicates that Cain and Lamech were each the "master" of a "great secret" whereby they pacted with Satan to kill for personal gain.[1] The term is found in Joseph Smith, Jr.'s translation of the Bible, in Genesis 5, which is also published in the Inspired Version of the Bible by the Community of Christ, and in an excerpt published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) as the Book of Moses. Based on perceived Hebrew roots, the LDS Church speculates that the term Mahan could mean either mind, destroyer, or great one.[2] Non-Mormon scholars, however, suggest based on contextual and historical analysis that the term is related to Master Mason, the highest degree of the Blue Lodge of freemasonry. [3] Another suggestion by both Mormon and non-Mormon scholars is that the term is related to Mahoun, a pejorative reference to Muhammad during the Middle Ages which eventually became associated with witchcraft.
A footnote to Moses 5:31 in the LDS Church edition of the Pearl of Great Price states that "'Mind,' 'destroyer,' and 'great one' are possible meanings of the roots evident in 'Mahan'"[12] but no further explanation is provided.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Mahan

Word History: Primitive Indo-European had pairs of words for some very common things, such as water or fire. Typically, one word in the pair was active, animate, and personified; the other, impersonal and neuter in grammatical gender. In the case of the pair of words for "fire," English has descendants of both, one inherited directly from Germanic, the other borrowed from Latin. Our word fire goes back to the neuter member of the pair. In Old English "fire" was fȳr, from Germanic *fūr. The Indo-European form behind *fūr is *pūr, whence also the Greek neuter noun pūr, the source of the prefix pyro-. The other Indo-European word for fire appears in ignite, which is derived from the Latin word for fire, ignis, from Indo-European *egnis. The Russian word for fire, ogon' (stem form ogn-), and the Sanskrit agni-, "fire" (deified as Agni, the god of fire), also come from *egnis, the active, animate, and personified word for fire. fire (n.) O.E. fyr, from P.Gmc. *fuir (cf. O.Fris. fiur, O.N. fürr, M.Du. vuur, Ger. Feuer), from PIE *perjos, from root *paewr- (cf. Armenian hur "fire, torch," Czech pyr "hot ashes," Gk. pyr, Umbrian pir, Skt. pu, Hittite pahhur "fire"). Current spelling is attested as early as 1200, but did not fully displace M.E. fier (preserved in fiery) until c.1600. PIE apparently had two roots for fire: *paewr- and *egni- (cf. L. ignis). The former was "inanimate," referring to fire as a substance, and the latter was "animate," referring to it as a living force (see water). Fire applied in Eng. to passions, feelings, from c.1340. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fire
Back in Ripper's office with gunfire sounding in the background, General Ripper puts a comforting - and menacing - arm around a worried Mandrake's shoulder, revealing his completely paranoidal, psycho-sexual, psychotic lunacy. As Mandrake realizes he is speaking face-to-face with the real enemy and is literally being gripped by him, he nervously fingers and folds a piece of chewing gum in his fingers in front of him. According to the nutty, obsessed General who has found a scapegoat for his own sexual inadequacies in the Russkies, Commies are unaffected by the plot to pollute the water of the world because they drink vodka:
Ripper: Mandrake? Mandrake: Yes, Jack? Ripper: Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water? Mandrake: Well, I can't say I have. Ripper: Vodka, that's what they drink, isn't it? Never water? Mandrake: Well, I-I believe that's what they drink, Jack, yes. Ripper: On no account will a Commie ever drink water, and not without good reason. Mandrake: Oh, eh, yes. I, uhm, can't quite see what you're getting at, Jack. Ripper: Water, that's what I'm getting at, water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven-tenths of this earth's surface is water. Why, do you realize that seventy percent of you is water? Mandrake: Uh, uh, Good Lord! Ripper: And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids. Mandrake: Yes. (he begins to chuckle nervously) Ripper: Are you beginning to understand? Mandrake: Yes. (more laughter) Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure-grain alcohol? Mandrake: Well, it did occur to me, Jack, yes. Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water? Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes. Ripper: Well, do you know what it is? Mandrake: No, no I don't know what it is, no. Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?
In Ripper's office at Burpelson Air Force Base, Mandrake studies doodles on a notepad left on Ripper's desk - the jumble of words that filled Ripper's mind in his last few hours make the code's discovery difficult - P e a c e O n E a r t h and P u r i t y O f E s s e n c e form interlocking, crossword-like patterns. Arbitrarily, Mandrake whispers the letters: "O P E." They are twisted permutations of the recall code. Shots destroy the lock on the office door. Colonel "Bat" Guano (Keenan Wynn), the gun-happy leader of the attack forces, enters brandishing an M-1 rifle. Guano orders Mandrake to put his hands over his head and then inspects his uniform: "What kind of suit you call that, fella?" Offended by the insult, Mandrake indignantly replies: "This happens to be an RAF uniform, sir. And I am Group Captain Lionel Mandrake. I am General Ripper's Executive Officer."
Although Guano wants to question him about Ripper and take him prisoner, Mandrake is anxious to call SAC and urgently pleads with him to phone the President and try a recall code based on the POE patterns in Ripper's doodles:
I've got a very good idea what the recall code is and I have to get in touch with SAC headquarters immediately...May I tell you that I have a very, very good idea, I think, I hope, I pray, what the recall code is. It's some sort of recurrent theme he kept repeating. It's a variation on Peace on Earth or Purity of Essence. EOP. OPE. It's one of those...Don't you know that General Ripper went as mad as a bloody March Hare and sent the whole Wing to attack the Soviets? Don't you know that?"

"When Luke found out that the pineal gland - a little gland in the center of the brain, responsible for a very large range of regulating activities (it produces serotonin and melatonin) -was also a calcifying tissue, like the teeth and the bones, she hypothesized it would concentrate fluoride to very high levels. The gland is not protected by the blood brain barrier and has a very high perfusion rate of blood, second only to the kidney.
Luke had 11 cadavers analyzed in the UK. As she predicted she found astronomically high levels of fluoride in the calcium hydroxy apatite crystals produced by the gland. The average was 9000 ppm and went as high as 21,000 in one case. These levels are at, or higher, than fluoride levels in the bones of people suffering from skeletal fluorosis. It is these findings which have just been published......

This article sums up everything quite a bit. " Iron oxides are used as catalysts and magnets, so understanding how they are made biologically could be very important. The striking thing that we noticed is that the chemistry of the mineral relates directly to its use.
Both single-celled and many-celled organisms can organise mineral particles once they form into structures such as shell and bone. Certain bacteria grow tiny bar magnets inside their cells from chains of iron-oxide crystals that lie in the same direction. The magnets, about a twentieth of a micrometre long, allow these 'magnetotactic' microorganisms to navigate in the Earth's magnetic field by acting as compass needles.
Some microorganisms make minerals inside their cells and then carry the deposits to the outside of the cell where they are assembled into microscopic structures. One species of freshwater plankton, Stephanoeca diplocostata Ellis, makes about 200 curved rods of hydrated silica within tiny elongated vesicles bound by a membrane. Each glass-like rod is then taken outside the cell and rapidly woven into a basket-like structure. The plankton uses this structure as a minute lobster pot to catch bacteria and other microorganisms.
How do organisms manage to control the way minerals are deposited? Chemists still have not worked out the details, but, probably, one of the most important factors is how the organic macromolecules interact with the inorganic ions on the surfaces of the biominerals. The macromolecules can be either proteins and polysaccharides, secreted as sheets and fibres, or they can be long-chain fatty molecules called phospholipids, which make up the cellular membranes.
These organic molecules seem to control the very first stage of mineral deposition. This step, called nucleation, often controls how fast the crystallisation happens. Creating a solid crystalline surface from ions that are continually moving around in the watery solution of the cell requires energy. The organic macromolecules behave as catalysts by reducing the energy needed to start nucleation. What is more, the way that the ions come together to form the nucleus influences what kind of structure the growing crystals adopt. What happens is that the surface of the organic molecule acts as a template for ions, binding them into arrangements that they can readily take up in the solid state. Any change in the structure and chemistry of the surface of the organic molecule will be reflected as corresponding changes in the crystal structure of the biomineral.
Magnetotactic bacteria use the iron oxide magnetite as a magnetic sensor, while limpets have abrasive teeth made of the iron oxide goethite, which is extremely hard. This mineral enables limpets to graze on algae deeply embedded in rock. Limpet teeth are on a sort of conveyer belt which rasps across the rock collecting the algae. The teeth gradually break off at the end of the belt We found that the chemistry and organisation of the surrounding membrane influenced the structure, shape and size of the minerals formed. When we experimented with iron oxides, for example, we found that spherical crystals of magnetite formed inside the vesicles under the same conditions that produced needle-like crystals of goethite in the absence of the membranes. The magnetite crystals were also very small and uniform - about 5 nanometres across. Such fine powders could be a very useful way of making materials that need a large surface area to work effectively, such as catalysts, and some kinds of semiconductors used for solar energy cells."

pilchard, a sardine, high in minerals "Recorded in several forms including Pelcher, Pilcher, Pilchere, and the French Pelchaud, Pelcheur, and Pelchat, this is an Anglo-French surname. It has confusing origins, being either an occupational name for a maker or seller of pilches, or a nickname for a habitual wearer of one of these. A pilch was a kind of coarse leather garment with the hair or fur still on it, from the Olde English pre 7th century word "pylece" meaning a skin or hide. However to confuse the matter "pilcher" was a popular term of abuse, being associated with the directly unrelated "pilch", meaning to steal, and the equally unrelated noun "pilchard", a type of fish. Nevertheless some nameholders may originate from habitual use of these various terms"

I just got up and logged back in because of thinking about cast-iron shore, pilchard, eiffel tower (iron), bent-back tulips... (water lilies?) walrus... rivers of ash, urns of gold... (yellow sub?)
but I hadn't read your post till I did a search now.

When originally released, there was a second "Paul" figurine released as well. Same as shown above, yet the the other character in the set was "Captain Fred."
Somewhat harder to find, it can be found still on eBay.
No word if it will be re-released as well with this lot.

Fred Kaps (official name Abraham Pieter Adrianus Bongers), (June 8, 1926 – July 22, 1980) was a Dutch magician, famous for being the only magician to become FISM Grand Prix world champion three times. He was the creator of numerous original effects including his version of the colour-changing silks. Another popular effect he often performed was the salt shaker, in which act he poured a little salt on his empty hand, made the hand into a fist, then poured an "endless" supply of salt from his fist onto the floor, and as part of his act he would exhibit facial expressions of great surprise and disbelief, as he would, seemingly unsuccessfully, try to desperately stop the flow. ........ He appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in the United States, he was the guy who had the unenviable job of following the Beatles when they made their debut appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show": Beatles, Sullivan Get Back on DVD Ed Sullivan's February 9, 1964 installment truly was "a really big show. Some 73 million viewers tuned in to watch Fred Kaps' card and salt-shakers trick

"I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love...Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women...women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence."
