WOW! This is certainly a welcome idea. I'll have the first shot. Doc will no doubt be along to help himself as well. Everybody c'mon in and pull up a chair by the fireplace, (yes, we DO have one of those) and pour yourselves a Baileys...hic! We've got Britney Spears on the jukebox....we plan to take care of that faux paux shortly. The juke actually belonged to a friend of JoJo's...or so I hear. But there's some good stuff on there as well. Lemme see here...uhh...Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, BEATLES, YES! Who the heck else? Uhmm...XTC, Radiohead, The Drooling Gooberheads, The Slobbering Saliva's, The Indigo Girls...uhh...Moody Blues, The Doors, P.J. Harvey, Little Richard, Lil' Kim, and...hey! We got Frank Zappa--Joes Garage Parts 1&2! And of course, Alanis Morissette...everybody pull up a chair and relax! ...*Jukebox BLARES! Hello Mr. Man. You didn't think I'd come back. You didn't think I'd show up with my army, And this ammunition on my back. Now that I'm Miss Thing. Now that I'm a zillionaire. You scan the credits for your name, And wonder why it's not there......I see right through youuuuuu....*

(I never pass up the opportunity for shameless self-promotion) More selections for a varied & schizo jukebox..... The Residents, Joy Division, Beach Boys, Sparks, Pere Ubu, The Cure, Ministry, Tool, NIN, Korn, Blue Cheer, Hendrix, The Kinks, Gong, Dread Zeppelin, Pixies, The Breeders, Research, The Hickoids, & Hank III. I LOVE that name.... The Drooling Gooberheads!!!!

A good list! Thank you for posting------rock and roll stranger/neophyte listener that I kinda am, I will print, post, and purchase as time and $ permit. I recognise the names except two----gotta steep myself in hipper, more driving music, at least on the side. All good music is important. And I have liked Korn---- what I have heard--they're fierce.
Anyway---here is the one place I can be glib about what I dont know (the vastness of all outdoors) and learn a little. I dont have to pretend--"Oh, yes, I know all about them. They are hip and groovy oh wow. Well, gotta go now. "
It is beneficial for me to pull my ears out of the safe, moderate fare I am entrenched in. I'll always love Broadway, classical, lite jazz, easy pop-----but I yearn to branch out, at least in my listening life.

I'll bet I could help out with this expanding of the musical mind! In fact I'll bet there will be a mind-expanding cd in yer mailbox today! You might enjoy some of my compilation cd's I've put together. They would make for some killer "samplers". I've even got my massive collection posted online for easy browsing! www.ruddart.com/a-m.txtwww.ruddart.com/n-z.txtI've got another folder of all classical, but that's not important here. Now back to the point of the thread! I've never been a Baileys drinker. I may have to get a bottle of that wonderful stuff & catch up! What's the best way to drink it? Just plain on the rocks? Here's my favorite drink. YUM YUM. But as I get older, I can't get away with enjoying nearly as many of'em as I used to. I'm getting to be quite the lightweight in my old age!

Nicely done eyesbleed. You're obviously very talented but you already know that, so I digress, though I'm impressed. You make Polly look real good! It's great that you choose to express yourself openly, rather than sitting around waiting to be entertained. That's why I can't stand TV. Most of it is trash IMHO. The rest of it is a boring mishmash of screwed up facts--an overly regurgitated smorgasborg of mundane utopia served up blandly desolate with a side order of cra*ola...( dig in everybody). There might be the odd redeemable show but I wouldn't know, I don't watch the snooze tube. Polly Jean Harvey is more than deserving of her status as one of the cornerstones of '90s alternative rock. She has only improved IMHO. I love the moodiness in her songs. She may come across as a bit of an aquired taste for some people, (Rid of Me) but hey! If we didn't have to slosh our way through the Britney (OOOPs I DID IT ONE MORE TIME) Spears...there might actually be more room for the PJ's and Tom Waites of the music world. She has always been on the leading edge of alternative ideals, songs and unique musical expression--yes she's explicit, that's her style, like it or lump it. Well you know The Drooling Gooberheads name was discovered by yours truly (to my knowledge) during my last post...of course, it's totally made up, so it's available to anybody who wishes to use it. I really need to practice my Polly Jean. I also love Johnette Napolitano. She kicks serious butt. She has an absolutely amazing voice. Concrete Blonde, now they've made some great music over the years. And even a hit or two... "And if you're somewhere dRuNk[/b] and passed out on the floor. Oh Joey I'm not angry anymore". A few more artists of note: Rage Against the Machine. ( A friend of mine turned me on to them years ago). Peter Gabriel: He know's what he likes...in your wardrobe! Biko, Shock The Monkey. The man is pretty odd in his own way...I like him. Sarah Harner: The Hideout, Basement Apartment. She's making some waves and will be around for years. Very folksy-with more than a dash of country flavoured pop--confessional storyteller...she's very unique, I like her as well. Umm...this is the Off Topic thread right? OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY--GOODY!! A few artists that I wish would just disappear off the face of the planet. How can we miss you if you won't go away?! Phil Collins....Grrrrrrrrr!! Britney Spears....Talent syncing? There's a new one! Rod Stewart: If you wanna' do justice to a very talented vocalist, performer, songwriter; buy his first few albums and maybe his greatest hits......after that--zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Norah Jones aka: Snorah Jones...Go on vacation, puuullleeessse. We promise to buy the next CD... eventually, if you'll just do us all that one itty bitty favor! Think: Bermuda! Courtney Love.....Double grrrrrrr!! Justin Timberlake: See Snorah Jones above. American Idol winners, losers, participants, producers, directors, stagehands, writers, editors, Simon Scowl....OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!! Regarding the various choices in drinking preferences on this thread. Diversity = individual approach but there may be a song that covers all of our preferences. No, not Tubthumping...it's: Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac. No really...I changed it a little. We'll see how it looks. And it isn't even Off Topic. Which I already am. And on the OT thread no less!

This is one of my all time favorite songs. It is Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac from their 1982 album Mirage. I re-wrote it last night with this thread in mind...so graciously put forth by xtp626, and it seems only appropriate that we should have a theme song of sorts. So here it is, for better or worse. Everybody pull up a cognac or whatever you like (BAILEY'S--on the rocks for me, always).
GYPSY
Now becomes:
TIPSY
So I'm smashed...just a lil' bit, another round? Schnapps by the score, well I'm buzzed. In this room, the faceless, drink whiskey sours. Fact is I'm tipsy...just because....I'm feeling dipsy...just because...
And so it all goes down so smooth. Well you know that it does, well, Light beer strikes, makes me buzzed, where am I?!
Oh... and you try through out the night, to not seem so tipsy. You feel so tipsy.
You get tipsy...don't refrain. A taste of freedom...with a little beer... I spilled my beer....on a tony rug.
And if I bust a smile...say that I need some fun. It's hard while tossing chunks... to look for love...
I am dancing...so lame, watch me now. I am such a dish...see me twitch and thrust. And a daiquiri is all that's, best for me now. You see I'm tipsy.... you see I'm tipsy...
Light beer strikes...makes me buzzed...what a night. (And it all goes down so smooth). But then it all comes back up soon. I drank wine...Bailey's goes...good with ice. Oh..... And I'll be reeling, wide eyed...that's always bad news. And it always comes back up soon... You see I'm tipsy....I feel so dipsy...
And it all comes back to you... As it all comes back up soon...

Great thread, everybody.
Eyesbledd, yes you can and you already have. Got your 2 CDs today, most interesting listening. This is you, yes?, the vocalist, yes?
Amazing---it is alternative----good sounds. There's a lot of sonic interest--you have live and studio mixes, different things, I have to listen through a good number of ytimes to formulate reactions--but I hear a lot of interesting things. Really good lead guitar player. Drum miking, drum plating--very cool. The lyrics and vocals are very creative. I of course, really dug "Aquaintances", and the one about , gosh the CD is in the car, the one about "My mind is diving deep", my mind is I gotta go get the CD and case--the cool one with the great changes, guitar lines that underlie that vocal------OK my memory---I will listen more. I am inly up to song#11, cause I tend to listen to one and repeat it before moving on. You guys were jammin', and its very creative. I can hear time spent on working out the arrangements, the form, the lines---and you avoid the corporate rock cliche stuff totally. (Of course, I like that to, but, its a different bag.) You have good variation of vocal "colors" in your singing.
Thanks again. This will get me broadening out my ear. My roomate has been tuning into Album88 here, our local alternative, for a couple of weeks, so this comes interestingly at a good time. It must be time for old Dr Rowbear to listen to other things.......thanks.

WARNING: Unappealing rant follows below.
I love American Idol because Simon is so tactful, kind, warm, gentle, and oh yes diplomatic to all those who don't make the cut.
Oh, what the h*ll am I saying. That was a lie.
Simon can really bully those sensitive teen-agers down to size. And that's JUST what they deserve, right? Encouraged to come and make fools of themselves. That's what we want to see in American TV: powerful music corporations scarring delicate young egos. And INVITED to do so!!!! That'll show us who's in control! It warms our hearts in the TV audience when a fragile 15 or 16 year old untalented hopeful is lured into an audition where poor performances can be videotaped to be broadcast to all the world. Including by a thourough berating. All their family and friends can then relive the humiliation on VHS for all time.
And the best part--the networks and associated production companies get to make millions of dollars from the humiliation of naive minds!!!!! That's something they should be SO proud of!!!
Yes, I know that all these kids go in signing away permission for them to broadcast every embarrassing moment of the excercise. They are fully "informed." That makes it OK, I guess. "We wanna trash you in front of 35 million people, just lettin' you know, now."
Still------kids are wide eyed and full of dreams---they dont always know they are bad singers-----and here comes an audition advertisement appealing to them. Adults used to think better about exploiting the inexperience of young folks. Now, they can gleefully shame them and buy a nice car with the proceeds. That's blood money.
I wish they would be more decent about the kids who are under twenty. The older ones are mature enough to handle it, one hopes. But to a teen, maybe being honest and simply saying--you haven't quite got enough talent for our competition--is more appropriate.
But words like, "your voice is awful", "worst audition I've ever seen", "that was wretched", "you were unbelievably bad", "you are clueless", "what was that you were trying to do, not SING I hope?", and "Are you serious?"......................and making condescending faces and gestures, smirks, totally negative body language.
Then they well up or cry, try to defend themselves, look confused, turn red, become flustered and agitated-------- all this eagerly sought by the producers. Then, edit a string of the most intense of these scenes together so the TV audience can ridicule them at home in mass.
The show will lose in the ratings when the makers can no longer attract enough awkward and naive souls to ridicule.
A year ago I thought it was for their own good. No its not. Its disgraceful from all sides. They should leave those parts out.
But there is a killing to be made from degradation in these times.

...But there is a killing to be made from degradation in these times. my DH and I were discussing that recently. Everything has become "mean spirited", from music to commercials to game shows. Nothing is "fun" or "positive" anymore. It's all about insults and ridicule. ....Still------kids are wide eyed and full of dreams---they dont always know they are bad singers-----and here comes an audition advertisement appealing to them... I do not watch American Idol, but even I know the William Hung story. And I love it!! ;D He got the last laugh. All the way to the bank ;D

He had appearances and projects out the wazoo after "Idol" torpedoed him ;D

Gee whiz Doc... Thanks! With a review like that, I'm liable to be sending out a few more cd's! I'm glad to hear yer enjoyin' it coz I didn't really expect ya to like it. This is you, yes?, the vocalist, yes? Ya, I do most of the vocals; with the exception of..... The bass guy sings track 6, & the verses on 3 & 14. The guitar guy sings track 2 & 8, & the verses on 12. Really good lead guitar player. Drum miking, drum plating--very cool. The lyrics and vocals are very creative. I of course, really dug "Aquaintances", and the one about , gosh the CD is in the car, the one about "My mind is diving deep", An AWSOME guitar player for sure! I thought we were working on our new "Bill & Dave" album, but our last recording session was 18months ago. Those dang tempermental musical geniuses sure can be hard to work with at times.... & they're too damn sensitive!! All I can do is wait for him to get over whatever it is. That's funny you'd like Aquaintences.... my 1st attempt at songwriting. Once I found my drunken self singin' in a punk band, I figured I'd better write something.! Very little thought or work put into that one! The track yer tryin' to remember is probably Spelunking Minds. A lot of people name that as a fave, & most everybody agrees that it's the bass-guy's best work. He also sings it, so that means I get to leave & go find a stiff drink!

I think it's because he knows he's really bad. He doesn't mind & knows this won't last, so he's got a fun what-the-hell attitude about. Might as well have a little fun while it lasts! Not to mention the extra money. I much prefer it when the artist is trying to force a new coolness, or an unfamiliar genre of music to hideous results..... but they really think they're cool. Elvis has several 60's movie soundtracks that are funny as hell. Golden Throats is a good source for a lot of really bad gems by some really famous people. I can hear it now, their producer suggesting "Do some of these hip new songs the kids are listenin' to" The Golden Throats cd's are hilarious! And most everybody tries to rock but...... WILLIAM SHATNER IS DA MAN! But by far... the most painful album in the so-bad-it's-good collection is Joey Bishops Country & Western album. Ohhhh the pain! I also have all the Dean Martin C&W albums, but they are actually quite good! But still....WILLIAM SHATNER IS STILL DA MAN!

Elvis has several 60's movie soundtracks that are funny as hell. it's almost criminal, some of that crap they made him record. He really shines in his gospel recordings; and the 50's Sun Records music, as well as the 70's Vegas stuff, when he was singing what he wanted to sing, are the best he ever did. The RCA stuff was mostly schlock, second only to those gawdawful movie songs. Delores Fuller, former girlfriend of Ed Wood, wrote some of those "jewels", including Do the Clam. Incidentally, she did not care for the way she was portrayed in the Ed Wood movie, and prefers to be remembered as a songwriter. Riiiiiight.

Very clever with the John Mayer title eyesbleed. That was a real ZINGER! ;D Some artists such as Stink--erm...Sting, and Phil Collins were okay at one time. The first few Police albums were decent, if that's your bag. Collins with Genesis made Abacab, And Then There Were Three...those were decent records. But in the '80's and '90's they were in such heavy rotation that it made me almost afraid to turn the radio on. And I know there are a lot of talented young singers out there today but some of these singing divas really sing the fun right out of their songs. Especially when they rehash old disco and pop songs. Very few if any R&B styled artists today can ever dream of holding a candle to Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Little Richard, The Four Tops and all the rest...they simply don't make 'em like they used to. As for the Jackson's--they've become a tired, well worn joke. You don't have to be a trained vocalist to know that Janet's vocals are seriously over-dubbed and electronically glossed over. She really cannot sing. Michael can sing but....well....uhmmm....he's lost all credibility regardless of what you believe of his legal troubles. Innocent until proven gulity--certainly. But his music career is probably over. Maybe he could try for a starring role in a movie. ...Face Off 2?......just a thought.

Aha, so this is where the Bailey's crew hang out...
Can we add Celine Dion to the top of the list, or will the lynch mob come after me again?
She is so popular around the world, but trust me, most Anglos from Quebec can't stand her...
There was one time she would not accept an award because it was for an English song, well nowadays she doesn't have a problem with English money, though, does she...
