You don't get it. And sadly, you won't until you get over yourself. Seriously......with all the poorly-written, decadent movies that are released into theaters these days to such great success, I find it funny that all it really takes to send people into a (stupid) uproar is a love story set in the 60's to the music of the Beatles. Wait, did everyone catch that part? A love story set in the 60's to the music of the Beatles. I mean, holy shit Batman, what was Julie Taymor thinking?

www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/136490.htmlI love me, I love me, I'm wild about myself I love me, I love me, my picture's on my shelf. You may not think I look so good, but me thinks I'm divine It's grand when I look in my eyes and know I'm mine, all mine! I love me, I love me, and my love doesn't bore Day by day in every way I love me more and more. I take me to a quiet place I put my arm around my waist... If me gets fresh I slap my face! I'm wild about myself. movies.nytimes.com/movie/331031/Across-the-Universe/rnr#9. September 17th, 2007Rating: the worst piece of crap "I don't know what I was expecting but after 10 minutes of this garbage I wanted to walk out. I kept waiting for Mr. Holden's moment of falling in love with this crap, but it never came, and I finally picked my baby boomer body up and left. I will most likely never trust Mr. Holden's opinion again on movies. And what Taymor did to the Beatles songs is a crime. This is a simple silly take on a very important period in our history which Taymor treats as an MTV video. Easily the worse film of the year or maybe the decade[/b]."

movies.nytimes.com/movie/331031/Across-the-Universe/rnr#8. A (Borderline) Creative Masterpiece My girlfriend dragged me to Across the Universe, yet I had to be dragged out after consuming the credits. Perfectly cast, gorgeously shot, outstandingly edited and paced, deftly written, stunningly creative, and astoundingly integrated with Beatles hit songs to move the narrative forward, this movie blew me away. The movie moves between Liverpool, NYC, Princeton University, California - weaving multiple subplots and important character developments driven equally between dialogue and expert visual direction - believably and seamlessly, with surprising trippy treats, unexpected script departures, poignancy, political balance of Vietnam and MLK with super light touches, and zeitgeist flourishes that are never heavy handed. When you mix in the gorgeous melodies and storylines within the Beatles music, ATU just becomes an irresistable treat - without the campiness, or dark drama illustrated in Moulin Rouge. Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess are just outstanding, both in their acting and vocal chops.

"You suck."
"No way. You suck."
"Not! YOU suck."
"Sorry mate, but YOU double suck."
"Well, you TRIPLE suck, with suck sauce."
"Go suck yourself."
(Fisticuffs, broken furniture, loud swearing.)
(Climactic crashing through window.)
(Silence.)
(jarvitronics lights magic cigarette.)
Was it good for you guys too?

wow I'm regaining my synchronicity abilities. This is the 3d time in a few hours I read a mention of INTERVENTION. first I read up the wiki on VALIS again for my reply to the welcome thread for Horselover A funny detail is that Dick got the message from VALIS that his son was ill thru listening to Strawberry Fields Forever. Then I read it mentioned again in a thread at David Icke's forum about the similarities between ascensionsymptoms and mental illness www.davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10130reply#9 I feel things are moving again..magic in the air All Love Jan

From the same Readers Reviews section of the Times (I am not sure why only the negative reviews are being listed and why the movie would only appeal to those with "morbid curiosity".)
1. September 22nd, 2007 Rating: 4 stars Remembrance of long-buried joy I experienced an unusual sense of being utterly immersed in parts of this movie, as if on a trip in another, wondrous world...and these parts made up for the slower ones inbetween. For instance, an opening sequence where waves are also newspapers flipping throughout the years is visually, musically and metaphorically mind-blowing. During the "Dear Prudence" sequence, my surprise and delight at a certain visual elicited a long-buried, child-like wonder I had not experienced in years. The "I Am the Walrus" sequence: words are almost too trite to describe. Despite the slow parts, I came from "Across the Universe" feeling, and remembering joy. - antoninar 2. September 21st, 2007 Rating: 5 stars Missing the Point Holden is right about falling in love with this movie. You have to jaded not to shed a tear or two. The fundamental disconnect with those who cannot embrace the movie (including the reviewer for the Boston Globe) is the inability to have Beatle songs interpreted in a fresh new way. Rather than delivering the same versions of the Beatle's catalog, Taymor et al (with thank to T-Bone Burnett)have reinvented the repertoire in a manner that sheds new light on the lyrics and allowed me to once again appreciate their beauty. This is rare and beautiful film albeit with flaws but in the end masterful. - fleaton

I don't understand why I am not 'allowed' to think that the movie doesn't look like it appeals to me without being called stupid. It's just my opinion, you know? I'd never call anyone stupid for thinking it looks good. We've all seen the same amount of footage so, if seeing that footage and thinking it doesn't look that great is deemed invalid, wouldn't that make any positive conclusions drawn from it invalid as well? I don't think that my or anyone's thoughts deserve to be called stupid here...

I don't think that my or anyone's thoughts deserve to be called stupid here... Pardon the confusion. As the original author of this thread I should explain what occurred and why I deleted the original post. (And just quickly, Coconutfudge, I don't see any posts here by anyone intimating that you're stupid or that you have no right to express your opinion!) In the original post I informed the board about the existence of the movie, gave a link to the preview, and expressed a PERSONAL opinion which praised the director of the film as well as a positive feeling about the film itself. While I wasn't expecting a thank you, I wasn't expecting the fury of negative and sarcastic posts that ran roughshod over my first post, and then the second post, in which I asked 'B how he could judge a film so harshly without having seen it. This question was also ignored and hence my sarcastic reference to the RA videos. (which was not fair to all RA series fans). I no longer feel that 'B was intentionally berating me and ignoring me. He does get caught up in his novelette-like posts and probably didn't realize what I said in the original post of that thread. And if he did, then I probably posted something at one time or another that was rude, in which case I deserved it. Or maybe it's just something that was alluded to in LR's farewell post. So, no hard feelings. I guess it's that time of the year for me . And I a happy to see that the vast majority of people who have seen the film constantly report being "blown away" and/or moved to tears by it, as well as the good reviews from multiple Pulitzer Prize winning giants such as the N.Y Times, the LA Tomes, and many others. Personally, I feel that the world needs a film like this, right now. Oh, and a happy Autumn Equinox to all, and to all a good day. Tiny Tour

Mystery Tour, I would have expected someone who's 107 years old to have thicker skin than you do! Certainly your life experience should have taught you by now to be mellow enough to accept the occassional insult; but frankly, unless you were personally involved in the making of this "masterpiece", I see no reason for you to feel personally inslulted. I can't see any logic in your saying that my responses were "negative and sarcastic posts" which "ran roughshod over [your] first post". They were not attacks on you or your post. You're allowed to have an opinion. Unfortunately, if by chance, I "probably didn't realize" what you said in the original post of this thread, I have no way of going back to look at it now, seeing as you've deleted it.
I will concede that, strictly speaking, it's not fair of me to judge a film without seeing it. That said, when every single snippet of the film I have seen looks phony-er than anything Iamaphoney could come up with in his wildest dreams, and - on top of that - is offensive to me because, having lived through that period of time, I can understand what the scenes are supposedly portraying, then I can't help but be pre-disposed to thinking that this movie is not my cup of tea. I must say I am offended that my generation is so poorly represented by the actors (and script) in this film. I certainly would not want Jude or Coconut Fudge to think that this film in any way is what we were like, or what it was like for us at the time, because from what I've seen of it, nothing in this movie is the way it truly was! If you want to say, "But as a piece of art, it's a masterpiece!" then OK, but understand that it is no more real than "Springtime For Hitler" in "The Producers", and is utterly offensive to those of us it alledgedly portrays. And, to add insult to injury, it's stupid, imo. When I heard about the use of "I Want You" with the Uncle Sam poster, I thought to myself, "How retarded!" I couldn't believe my eyes later, when I saw that Jude had posted that he felt that it was "genius". So now you know.

It's just a film, and any interp is going to be a subjective one , just like any one person's individual experience of a time period is. So, I propose we give this up, lest we go on arguing point by point what each of us did and did not do, or which way we should and should not be. (it's infinite, you see) So, this is my fault and I am sorry. (3rd one, by me) So let's just let it be.

A lot of funny things with emoticons. Our differing opinions concerning Across the Universe aside, that was hilarious, B. You forgot to mention one thing: After JoJo came to break the fight up, things got a little out of hand, and....well.....rumor is that at least one of us was replaced by a look-alike.

I am actually surprised that mystery tour assumed that most people here would be dying to see this film as a "masterpiece".
1) Most people here are very critical as far as analizing everything Beatle related. 2) A lot of people here do believe in mass comditioning and that the Beatles as admitted by John were part of a social mass condition and that a movie full of Beatle remakes with special effects computer imagery might be full of "hidden propaganda" (for lack of a better term) especially coming out in this day and time. I don't think the use of Bono as Uncle Sam for the only bit of trailor that has been shown eveywhere was done without a great deal of thought as to the message such an image would portray considering Bono's role on the world political stage.
I just don't buy into that type of gullibility or innocense(sp?) that causes a person to accept anything just because it says Beatles... not to compare The Beatles to Jesus but it is the same gullible innocense that causes Christians to accept anything that says Christian or Jesus.
