Sometimes you find some real gems in the most unlikely places. I live north of Houston, TX near the town of Conroe, population around 8,000. There is a used bookshop in the center of town in one of the older buildings in a row of shops. It's musty, smells of old paper with a touch of mildew, but I have bought some really good books there really cheap. I got an entire series of W.E.B. Griffen books there for like $2.00 per book when they would normally cost around $7.00 new.
Ok, I was there several weeks ago and was looking around and found some old magazines...mostly Life, National Geographic, and some other main newstand mags...many of which dated back to the late 1970's. On a whim I asked if they might have some collectables from the 60's and the clerk brought out a box with a bunch of mags that looked mostly like National Geographic. She said I could look through it and if I found something I wanted to let her know. I almost blew it off and left as I was about to go into a sneezing frenzy.
Well, low and behold, THIS VERY BOOK was buried about 3/4 of the way down inside this box...The Original Beatles Book from 1964! It was in a plastic cover even! After seeing that one I really had to fight the urge to just dump the entire contents of the box onto the floor to look for more Gems...but I maintained my cool and contained my excitement. I found a few more gems, mostly along the line of some National Lampoon mags from the mid 70's, but I decided I'd forego getting them...THIS TIME.
I very calmly took the Beatles mag to the checkout and acted as disinterested as possible as I looked on the cover, front and back, for a price. I then turned to the clerk and asked..."what will you take for this old magazine?" She looked at me like I was some kind of fool and I thought that my cool cover had been blown. But to my surprise she said..."well, it's in really good condition since it's been in that plastic cover, so I'll have to charge you $3.00 for it." I don't know what my exterier must have looked like, and I hoped that it wasn't showing what I was feeling inside, and I said, "ok, I suppose I can afford $3.00 for this old thing, I mean it IS in great condition for as old as it is"....*cough* I managed to keep my emotions in check until I was safely in my car with the door closed...then I screamed...WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!
I want to go back and inquire about more old mags, but I don't want to appear too obvious...hahaha. She might start looking at ebay or something to see what they sell for there...WHEN you can find them.
