That old debate, who's better the Beatles or the Stones? If you click "other", please state the group you think is the best of all time. ;D

The Beatles of course. But maybe the greatest musical artist of all time would have to be Mozart.

I don't think it's gonna be much of a contest around here. It's certainly not much of a contest with me coz I never liked The Stones much. Too ol'blues-oriented for my taste. The only Stones album I really like is Their Satanic Majesty's Request. Actually I easily could've voted "other" coz The Beatles are probably not at the top of my list. They weren't even in the Top 10 a decade ago. My Beach Boys collection is much more thorough than my Beatles collection. And my Residents collection is larger than the two combined. etc.etc. I spread myself too thin & have LOTS of favorites. But The Beatles have gotten to be a "new" fave these last few years & are back in the Top 5 again.... so I went ahead a voted beatles.

Was that a rhetorical question? I like the Stones, but they can't compare to the Beatles. I was thinking about it the other day, one thing I find unique about the Beatles' music is the way they can "take a sad song and make it better" by giving it a happy beat. When I'm feeling blue, I listen exclusively to the Beatles, because it always puts me in a lighter mood. Some examples that come to mind: Imagine the following, sung lounge-lizard style Anna (Go To Him) Tell Me Why Baby's In Black Girl Help! I Call Your Name I Don't Want To Spoil The Party I Need You Misery No Reply Please Please Me Please Mr. Postman Ticket To Ride Even "This Boy" & "Yesterday" are not so down... (tho some of us have already endured at least one lounge-lizard rendition of "Yesterday" at some point.) K I'm shamelessly giving myself a Good Posting award... call me crazy .. but when i feel blue, i like to feel bluer. (the word bluer.. doesn't look right does it?)
my all time favourite 'feeling bluer' song is "Two of Us".. i don't even know if it's supposed to be sad... but hey! [img src="http://galeon.hispavista.com/akostuff/img/Dunno2[1].gif"]

LOL Oh, yeah, me too... but there comes a time when we MUST make ourselves snap out of it... life must go on... LOL
I just find the music very uplifting, I think that's part of the magic.

call me crazy .. but when i feel blue, i like to feel bluer. True, but "blues" don't do it. I tend to go for a more gothic sorta thing at those times. Like Joy Division, or something slow by The Cure or The Smiths, or maybe something more acoustic like Nick Drake.

although I neglected my childhoodlove for most of the 90ies, I just have to go for the Beatles. I've been listening over and over to them again the last 2 months since I Found Out.
I do have to give a shout out here to some of the recent legends:
The Smashing Pumpkins-Billy Corgan I consider as a Godfather, he taught me very many things TOOL-from dark to light, the whole journey, demons and angels on record, I am even afraid of what they are working on now Radiohead-a perfect combination of telling us what is being done against us with the most heavenly lyrics "We're not scaremongering, this is really happening" The Flaming Lips-Oh joy of joys how perfectly hopeful and sweettasting are these Oklahomians, if you like 67 Beatles and Barrett era Pink Floyd check them out. I especially love their last 2 albums "The Soft Bullet In" and "Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots" Their older stuff is more psychedelic/experimental and I think I haven't travelled enough miles to really appreciate it.
But looking back the Beatles were the foundation for everything to me personally.
All Love Jan

I've always felt lucky that I was just the right age that the Beatles were the big thing right at the time that I was first discovering rock etc. (10). That's a pretty good foundation. I gotta get the Vol.1 Boxset that was released coz I know that when I put on The Beatles Second Album in mono about a gazillion memory flashes will go off. Anyway.... Ditto on the TOOL mention. Those guys are amazing. Nobody can touch TOOL. I hope they are workin' on something & not going their seperate ways. The Pumpkins are very cool also, but I haven't been much of an active fan. I really liked all those 90's releases. I bought'em & my step-daughter would run off with 'em & they never got replaced. One of these days I'll get back around to that stuff again.

Start out with a little Manilow during the initial cocktail hour; then.... once everybody's get a good buzz goin', put it into high gear & crank up some Hermans Hermits! I'll bet the poor neighbors are always complainin' about that loud Hermit music!

Better late than never... I of course voted for the Beatles.
The Stones are okay. I do like some of their songs, but truthfully, I only own the 40 Licks CD. Compare that to the Beatles, where I own all 13 regular CDs, the two Past Master volumes, and the three Anthologies.
I'm only in college now, so I of course wasn't around for Beatlemania, but I've never gotten into any of the newer stuff today. So much of it lacks the melody and soul that the older rock does. Most of it all sounds the same, where the Beatles (while having a sound all to themselves) were incredibly varied. One look at the White Album will show you that: rock, punk, and even country-western.
I doubt we'll ever see another band with the same magic the Beatles had.

I couldn't agree more with your entire post. The thing is, about the Beatles and the Stones, and this is what I try to impress upon others when debating this, is that the Stones have their top hits comparable to the Beatles. Maybe not better but comparable. But when you get past the first 2 or 3 songs of an album, the Stones songs are crap and the Beatles' songs are still good. Almost all of the Beatles tunes are good in some way.

Almost all of the Beatles tunes are good in some way. I have to agree especially with this because the last couple of Stones CDs seem like they were made soley as an excuse to go out on tour (Yet again). I've heard maybe 2 or 3 okay songs from them overall that they've released in the last several years. When they even bother to release a CD, that is. They have some classic songs and I have heard all of "Let It Bleed" several times--that is a great CD. But the Beatles made so many great records overall, they're just way better, IMHO. The thing I don't understand is, I've read review books like, Rolling Stones CDs/Albums Review Guide, and it seems like they've always given the Rolling Stones, like, 4 stars. Even Mick Jaggers solo CDs seem to get really good reviews from them. Are they really that good?! Ummm, obviously, I chose the Beatles. ;D

Rolling Stones weren't really considered a big rock band until the late 60's.
When the Beatles first became popular in the US, the Dave Clark 5 had alot of hits in the early days, not the Stones. It took a Lennon-Mc Cartney song "I Wanna Be Your Man" to be the first single for the Stones in the US...strange, but true.
