I rented this DVD about 2 months ago and I have to say it is one of the more enjoyable concert videos I have ever seen. I will give a brief review of it for the benefit of those who have not seen it yet.
The concert itself is great, but the special features are a real treat with all the interviews with all the different artists and performers. I get an equal amount of enjoyment from the special features as I do the concert.
Over all, the basic atmosphere of the concert is one of deep spiritual love. Everyone that performs were close friends of George's, and very great musicians. Eric Clapton directed all the music and did a marvelous job of it. Everyone who sings and plays puts their whole heart into what they are doing. It was said that this event was a great time of reflection and mourning for everyone, and you can really feel the love in the music as you listen to what everyone plays...or doesn't play...in each song.
The concert begins with Indian music at the direction of Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka. (She plays a ripping sitar piece in the beginning) Eric Clapton and Jeff Lynne join in with Ravi's orchestra on acoustic guitar on a couple of songs and it's really awesome.
The gap between the eastern and western music is filled by a performance by the Monty Python group. It is hillarious! Ya gotta see it!
The western music features Eric Clapton, Jools Holland, Sam Brown, Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Paul McCartney, Billy Preston, and about 26 other musicians, including George's son, Dhani. They played a variety of his more popular tunes from the Beatles, right on into and thru his solo work.
I don't wish to divulge much more than this except that I have found it a very spiritual experience...and I'm not even a follower Hare Krishna! You can sense the spiritual connection everyone who plays has with George and his music all throughout the concert. You will NOT be disappointed if you buy or rent this DVD, and I highly recommend it! They really do his music well!
