I am really happy this book was found and information from it was posted here! This is an EXCELLENT find as this book appears to make the same argument I have been making all along when it comes to making photo comparisons and fades. It's just not reliable for too many reasons, many of which I have stated time and again and don't really feel like re-stating now. I would like to get into the triangulation stuff and learn how to use it too. The ear comparison, however, with the two images I saw back on one of the other pages, I don't think is a valid one to use...a good ear print comparision would be from 66-67 time frame. Even MY ears have changed a little from when I was in my 20's and I'm rapidly approaching 50 now (mostly that I can grow hair on them better than I can the top of my head, hehe). My dad used to say I looked like a taxi cab with the doors opened when I had my hair cut really short.
Triangulation is the way to go...just gotta learn how it's done.

Hey first off, glad to see you stop by Larry! ;D About the ear identification, I did a Google on Alfred Ianarelli, an there are some web sites out there with PDF files of studies done on the effectiveness of his system. I don't have the sites handy, but I'm sure you can find them. One study I believe did a comparison of the ear system vs. using facial features. The ear system didn't do well unfortunately. Just a tiny bit better than the facial features, and not statistically significant. That's not to say Mr. Iananarelli was wrong about each ear being unique, and his impossible to find book would shed some more light on his findings. To use pictures of the ear we have the same 'ol problem, the camera must be pointed at the subject at the same precice angle and the photo needs to be very sharp and the ear needs to be unobstructed, by hair for example. I believe the study tried to "fool" the examiners by using different angles, lighting, etc., to see if the system held up. So yeah, it's not much help, I would guess the Chairman Mao double's ears were so different, it was beyond a reasonable doubt. Triangulation would be interesting to try, I don't see why you couldn't sorta "reverse engineer" the method. Say, take a picture of yourself with the camera angle carefully controlled, and then draw the lines as illustrated, and use the needed geometry to calculate the angles. Then, try it from another angle and put the system to the test, see if the meausurements hold up, Or if there's variance, how much. I know it's a lot of work, I would have done it myself by now, but... (lazy, haha)
