I don't recall this little "paul" side project bein' mentioned on any of the forums, & actually I had kinda filed them away & forgot about'em. Anybody whose into the more ambient electronic music, this is some good stuff, especially the 2nd cd Rushes. I did some googlin' on McCartney's Fireman to clarify some stuff, I wasn't even sure "paul" did Rushes. Anyway... the 1st one seems to be impossible to find now. Here's the cover & a short summary. "Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest" is the debut album by The Fireman, released on 22nd February 1994. Basically 9 remixes of the same track, this album contains more than the first playing will suggest. Several listens will reveal new sounds and themes reappearing different ways. These notable themes include several bass and guitar lines, a crunching drum break, snatches of vocals, and soothing background noises - chill out music par excellence. "Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest" was released on the Juggler label and is currently out of print. I agree with that in that it does seem to get better & more interesting with repeated listenings. A very cool "background" cd. I saw the "paul" tour in 94 & I'm pretty sure this was playin' over the PA before the concert while people filed in. The 2nd cd Rushes is conciderably better & I see it's on ebay. I found this review so somebody saved me the trouble..... Relaxed ambient electronica from Sir Paul McCartney and Orb collaborator Youth. Great stuff! Review: "It's a pleasure to know that Paul McCartney is still interested in sound and pure musical possibilities not having left all that behind in the 60's. That's right. This is Paul McCartney. This is, in fact, his second release under the Fireman moniker, though you won't find his name anywhere on the CD or liner notes. I actually had no idea this existed until a friend played it for me recently. The music on Rushes is dreamy ambient music that mixes lots of wild space sounds making it a bit more adventurous than most ambient recordings. The disc opens with "Watercolour Guitars". The song starts with a repeating acoustic guitar melody embellished by various shooting star space synths. The synths temporarily take over and then the song blends right into "Palo Verde". The melody doesn't change at first, but the pace picks up just a little and includes lots of little voice samples, our only concrete hint of McCartney's presence. The music is very laid back and, though they are prominent, the subtle little sound textures are easy to miss. "Auraveda" opens with an Indian motif. Sitars, tablas, and chanting create a dreamy Eastern atmosphere. It's hard to describe but I also hear those played backwards synth sounds heard so long ago on Magical Mystery Tour. But these are only embellishments. Soon the Indian theme drops slightly into the background as it's joined by a minimalist organ sounding instrument. "Fluid" is another dreamy piece that actually sounds like an old Ash Ra Tempel track. The guitar sounds very much like Manuel Gottsching and is combined with similar Ash Ra electronic excursions. "Bison" is one of the shortest, but also one of my favorite tracks. Jazzy rhythms, a dissonant guitar melody, orchestral space keys, mellotron, and the now trademark voicings make for a cosmic stew. "7am" is another ambient Ash Ra type electronic tune, again with mellotron sounds providing an eerie orchestral background. And McCartney's voice, for the first time, pops up briefly with no effects. This is music that would typically relax the listener, but there are enough extra touches that you just can't help paying too much attention to be relaxed. To those who are surprised by the existence of this McCartney project, bear in mind that this writer of silly love songs was also experimenting with music and sound back when all our favorite space pioneers were getting started as well. I searched the internet for information about this project and all I could find was discussion list archives in which participants did nothing but try to find hidden meanings in the songs. It figures.. Here's the weird little Fireman website. There's some streaming samples on one of the pages. www.fire-man.com/

Isn't the logo for MPL include a juggler? and as far a a bison's, er, long one (tusk): read down: www.digitallyobsessed.com/showinterview.php3?ID=60&page=2There seems to be a web, a thread, or line of connections, thru-out McCartney's projects. He seems to like to symbolically or subtelty put little things in his work that jive with his "mission", or goals, etc. I quoted "mission" as to mean a general one. I am not saying he is on a secret spy mission, or like the Blues Brothers, a "mission from Gahd," etc. just his own busy work ethic type thing------let's face it, the guy likes to stay busy. He has options. He excercizes them. My spelling is going downhill.

I had to get out first thing this morning & finish mowin' grass & then I had to walk the yard & put out insecticide granules, then walk the yard again watering it down.... lots of time to space out, so I opted for The Fireman in the walkman durin' all this. I can't believe I had forgotten about these rare jems.... I don't know why I didn't remember them sooner. A lot of people would find "Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest" to be a bit of a yawnfest, but the "Rushes" cd is excellent. I would highly recommend this cd..... It sounded great thru the headphones this morning. I didn't quite make it thru Strawberries, but I was ready for Rushes to repeat. As the review said, there's just a little too much stuff goin' on for this to be true "ambient" music.... & it's a little too spacey to be considered "dance" music. It's weird that his mediocre stuff gets so much attention, when he's got truely excellent stuff like this out there. The headphone spaceout session this mornin' inspired a collage...........

I was finishing up reading the book "The Holographic Universe", and I thought of this thread when I got to an interesting section. There is a man named Hugo Zeccarelli who had a method of recording sound he calls "holophonic", the idea being to reproduce the brain's own holographic way of processing sound. (as he theorizes)
The book says of the method: listeners often move their feet when they hear a recording of someone moving in front of them, and move their heads when they hear what sounds like a match being lit near their face.
And here's what's interesting: A number of major recording artists have approached Zuccarelli, including Paul McCartney and Peter Gabriel... (but due to patent restrictions he has not yet disclosed his techniques..) This was written in 1991, so maybe that changed. Could Sir Paul get the roadblocks out of the way? You may have here a completely new way of recording sound, but then kinda buried, weird.
Eyesbleed, your description sounds like this may be what it is!

Just got it, and don't know if it uses the sound technique I talked about, but it is very very cool, love it! In the song "Transcrystaline" they sample the line from "The Broadcast" from "Back To The Egg", I think I sense the situation" over and over. (Itself an odd inclusion on that album)
Hmm I dunno, does feel like the instruments are right there in your head..

that is weird I always thought back to the egg was one of the strangest masonic records. Never knew about that connection, have to hear the fireman album now then.
And also the former band of the other Fireman "Killing Joke ", weird.

And also the former band of the other Fireman "Killing Joke ", weird. Ya, he seems to be very "well-rounded". A bud of mine is a rave dj around London & he sez that Youth is a major contributor for the electro-dance stuff the rave dj's use. Besides the 2 Firemn cd's, he's also on Sir Pauls project called "The Liverpool Sound Collage" The LSC is another great cd worth getting. btw, Heard the "new" Killing Joke 03? It excellent.... maybe their best... Dave Grohl on drums.

And the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain, very strange.....
There is a fireman with an hourglass..... Is Bill's time running out? Remember back to the Wizard of Oz and the wicked Witch held an hourglass next to Dorothy and told her that her time was running out....
Eww, and the visual image of Sir Paul with firefighter helmet and missing chicklet....he's looking like a bumpkin there. Maybe he's with the Mayberry Fire Dept... Or worse yet, the Hooterville Volunteer Fireman's Band...remember on Green Acres? They would only play one song, very badly, "THere'll Be A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight"

No one finds the idea that he denies being a mason interesting? Not saying he is or he isn't, just the fact that he addresses it at all should make you wonder.. Who was was saying it in the first place?

I find the first mention of a fireman in one of the first songs Bill sings as Paul in Penny Lane interesting. Nobody had a clue that was just part of Bill's hidden identity. Of course Bill had to be part of the freemasons to get the job of Paul Mc Cartney, and later the title Sir Paul. One does not get that influential position just by being a member of a third rate Beatle wannabe band, unless it was a testing ground in preparation for the move to be Beatle Paul, the ultimate wannabee.

No one finds the idea that he denies being a mason interesting? Not saying he is or he isn't, just the fact that he addresses it at all should make you wonder.. Who was was saying it in the first place? Well, the language is interesting, too. "The fireman is no mason" as opposed to "The fireman isn't a mason." I know that's the "artist(s)" credited on the packaging. Here is a similitude. For what it's worth: Compare: A) "The street-walking tramp is no lady." B) "The street-walking tramp is not a lady." "B" is a categorical denial. The tramp is NOT something by nominative definition. Tramp does not equal lady. Also, "not" is an adverb modifying "is", rendering it negative. But, in "A", the tramp might be a lady by gender, but fails to live up to the more desirable attributes of ladyhood. Technically might be a lady, but a poor one indeed. "No" functions as an adjective, modifying the noun "lady", defining the kind of lady she is. She is "NO kind" of lady. She might be a biological "lady", but socially, she is NO lady! She acts against expectations of her. She is one, but don't act like one. See the difference? Now, back to the first idea: The fireman is no mason. The fireman may technically be a mason, a nominal mason, but declines to live up to all the particulars imposed on those in masonry. Can you imagine this exchange in a lodge from a strong lodge member about a less gung-ho, less active one? "You know member "Fred" over there from our lodge? That new guy from last year that hardly attends meetings? Whew, man. He is NO mason." A mason in name, but seldom participates in masonic activities, whatever they may or may not be. Maybe the fireman joined half-heartedly, but is far more into his job of putting out fires than being an all-out lodge member. What about this from Harrison?: "Please don't belong, please don't you be(too)long, don't belong...." What was George saying there? Maybe he didn't want Paul to join........... And this curious blank: "Ask any p'liceman on the street. There's so many there to meet." In conclusion, maybe "the fireman" initiated in but remained largely inactive.
