Hey Jude was supposedly written to comfort Julian Lennon over his parents' divorce when he was just five years old.
Given that context, why do we have the line...
"For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder."
A five year old kid wouldn't know about stuff like that.

Hey Jude was written for John, of course. It was Paul's subtle way of saying to John "Get over it. Everything will be alright if you let Yoko into your life. It's OK to fall in love." He was telling him to begin himself anew (Jude, by no coincidence, is the next book after 3rd Epistle of John in the Bible).
