I just got this message from JaiGuruDeva: " I was thinking maybe you should post some stuff from the archives about the possible connection with Klaatu. I found this picture of a sheet music booklet featuring Eleanor Rigby." here are the pix: EXCELLENT FIND!!!! I don't have any info saved on Klaatu (it was hard for me to follow, as I've said before I am not versed in Beatle history), but those of you "in the know", please add to this thread!! ;D THANKS, JaiGuruDeva!

I heard Klatttu sounded very similar to the Beatles. There was a rumor they were the Beatles in disguise! I am sure they were big fans, maybe the sun is not a coincidence.

I believe its from Klaatu barata niktu, a line from an old sci-fi flick, the name of the movie escapes me, but the plot is that an alien and his robot come to earth, where the alien is hurt, causing the robot to decide to attack earth, and the line comes in where the alien goes to stop the robot, roughly translated, the line is supposed to mean "no do not attack"

It's called "The Day The Earth Stood Still". It's one of those movies where the effects are so cheesy, you laugh. (I think it's from the 1950's.)

So, the robot is a "machine" programmed to protect the "alien." The alien is injured, but not so seriously, so he commands the "machine" to NOT attack the people that have tried to harm him, out of their panic and paranoia. And wasn't the robot named "Klaatu?" So, then "Klaatu" is the Protector. So an album by Klaatu is an album by the Protector? Some sort of allegory...........
I dunno, there is absolutely nothing in the Beatles story to be parallel to this, that I can surmise. I am drawing a blank.
Did the Beatles like Michael Rennie? Does anybody remember him here?

Another topic dear to my heart.
We'll take this is segments, as there is much to discuss.
Let's start at the beginning...
In 1976, an album was released by a band named KLAATU. It was released on the Canadian affiliate of Capitol Records. No biographical information was included on the album jacket. Instead, it simply stated that all songs were written and performed by KLAATU. No pictures of the band graced the cover. Inquiries to Capitol for any info on this "mystery" band were left unanswered.
The problem was quite simply, the music contained within the grooves bore a striking Beatle-esque quality. With little imagination and a good set of ears, the vocals of Lennon and McCartney, Harrison and Starr could be heard amongst the Sgt. Pepper-ish era tunes.
Was this the second coming?
The album in question titled "3:47 EST" in Cananda, and simply "Klaatu" here in the U.S. was soon rumored to be a un-released Beatle album that was a follow up to "Revolver." That album was soon scrapped due to the death of Paul McCartney in a car accident in 1966. A replacement "Paul" was found, groomed, and presented to the world with the release of Sgt. Pepper. This was the account of why there was such a delay between the release of "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper."
Time went by, and the tapes were re-discovered while combing through the excess while initial plans were in the making for what we now know as the "Anthology." The album was then completed, and released under am assumed name as a tribute to McCartney in '76.
Had the Beatles re-united in Canada under an assumed name in 1976 and released an album in memory of a fallen mate? And if so, what tell-tale "clues" could be discerned to prove just that?
To be continued...(if you're interested)

Possibly since the Beatles didn't want to make a tribute to Paul themselves they asked Klaatu to do it for them or maybe Klaatu just took it on themselves to do it.

Thanks for the replies!
Before I continue, I must address the fact that I personally do not find the "lost album" theory plausible.
Yet, it does not dampen the belief that indeed some, if not all of the Beatles had a hand in the production of this album.
It was not uncommon for the lads to write, perform with, and produce artists under assumed names. Many examples can be found of this fact.
First, lets look at some of the visual clues found on the front and back covers of the record.
The name KLAATU, came from a 1950s era sci-fi film titled "The Day the Earth Stood Still." As earlier discussed, the name was lifted from the lead character in the film.
A still from the film was used by Ringo Starr, with his face super-imposed upon the Klaatu character for his album "Goodnight Vienna."
The large "Sun" on the cover can also be found inside the gatefold of George's "33 1/3." It is said that the face on the "sun" is a composite of John's nose and chin, and Paul's eyes. Said to represent the common use of the "sun" in numerous Beatle lyrics and song titles.
The ornate scroll work that frames the front cover picture in the upper right and left corners resembles the head of a "ram." Possibly an indication of Paul's contributions to the record. The reverse of the cover shows a planet that seems to mimic the "Venus and Mars" cover, as well. In the movie, when the character Klaatu was asked where he came from, he answered " Venus and Mars." Also, at the end of one particular McCartney concert, he said to the crowd, "See you when the Earth stands still.." before he departed the stage.
Along the bottom edge of the front cover is a row of shrubs. It is said that the letters spelling B-e-a-t-l-e-s can be found in the tangle of limbs.
There is also a small mouse (more on him later) pictured on the front cover. It is implied that it's name is "Little Neutrino."(more on that later, as well)
Sound familiar?
A "neutrino" is a particle that can dis-appear, and re-appear at will. It can also pass through solid objects unknown and uneffected.
These are several of the supposed clues found on the cover . They seem to be referenced by the the solo works of the Beatles albums during this time period.
When asked of Paul McCartney if the Beatles would ever reunite, he once quipped that if they ever did, it would be soley for the music, and not the hype that surrounded it. " A conspiracy of silence speaks louder than words."
Next we'll look at the words found in the lyrics of the songs for further clues...

Amazing Apollo. I never relized how it all linked together like that. A still from the film was used by Ringo Starr, with his face super-imposed upon the Klaatu character for his album "Goodnight Vienna." Here's the pic you were talking about:

I just did a quick google on Klaatu for some basic info. (jeeeez, I guess I'm gonna have to get this too now) I see Terry Draper is listed as a member. Wasn't Terry Draper brought up on the old Who-Sings-What thread over at 60IFland way back when? Didn't somebody do a comparison of a vocal sample from Klaatu & a vocal sample from Hello Goodbye?? It seems like I remember something like that, but it was a long time ago.

Yes, eyesbleed, I think the "Sub Rosa Subway" was the track on the Klattu record. I bought the CD. I really like it. And yes, the lead vocal on that track (not all of them) bears great similarity to the lead of "Hello, Goodbye." Like, I tried to hear differences. Seem the same to me at this time.
The variety of vocal leads on the CD is wide. One other track strucl me as seeming like the lead singer for Steely Dan, another resembled Lennon, a lot, and in the middle of track 2, I think at 1'58" or so, there is a exclamation "California" that sounds very much like James Paul. SPOOKY.
Well done collection of tracks. Very interesting. Eccentric.

Went to a little used book store today, that also sells old vinyl. Didn't find anything interesting the Beatles section, but I looked under "K" and scored an original "Klaatu"! And for $4.50, sweet! I brought to the counter, and the clerk said "Oh wow, Klaatu!... I remember when I was working in a record store in 1976, and everyone thought it was the Beatles reunited." He said he was deluged with calls asking if they had the album in stock. Interesting... The shrub at the bottom of the page is worth a look, but I don't see anything definative myself. (I'm not much good at this anyway) Anyone who can make something out, give a yell.. And a too large version for an inbedded image but more detail: www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Klaatu/Klaatushrublarge.jpg

Just in reference to Terry Draper and possibility of him as a ghost-vocalist on Beatle tracks -- he was born in 1951. Doing the math that would make him around 15 or 16 years old at the time of "Hello, Goodbye" recording. Not very likely he would have a voice mature enough to ape McCartney yet IMO.

Bumped this because I've been listening to the album again, decided to make a scan of the cover and inner sleeve. Lots of interesting stuff here, faces on the ground on the front, symbolism galore maybe? Look at the stars on the inner sleeve, not saying I see something, but maybe someone will? First of all a cap of the album, vinyl, so bear with the scratches post cd era people. Who shouts "California!" in California Jam? I haven't really decided still. www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/KlaatuSide1-1.wmawww.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/KlaatuSide2-1.wmaThe front and back covers, smaller versions: Much larger versions: www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Klaatu%20scans/KlaatuFrontBig.jpgwww.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Klaatu%20scans/KlaatuBackBig.jpgAnd the inner sleeve front and back, couldn't shrink any more without making it unreadable, so a large version only of these: www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Klaatu%20scans/KlaatuInnerSleeveFront.jpgwww.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Klaatu%20scans/KlaatuInnerSleeveBack.jpg

It's just one of those things I've meant to get around to, but never did. Ya know.... Some artists will add a touch of the old scratch-effect to a piece to help get that "old" feel! Nine Inch Nails comes to mind right off-hand.

One thing that Apollo mentioned that always intrigued me, something about playing the part in the beginning of "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" backwards, the part with the crickets. I believe it was mentioned at TKIN that there was backwards speech in that part. Well, I listened over and over, and the only possible candidate that I can see is: the frogs. Here is the entire section backwards. Next thing I tried was slowing it down with a time strech, but that wasn't quite there, so I shifted the pitch up. Here is the result. I think what they might have done is spoken something in a normal voice, then done some serious engineering to make it sound like a frog's croaking, and for good measure, reversed it. The problem is reverse engineering it, and I know I didn't quite hit the mark here. I do think there's something here, and I have a few possibilities in mind.. See what you think.
