Hello, I am new and I hope that you will forgive my adding some Klaatu info here along with the Floyd stuff. (there appears to be no reply button on my page.)
Regarding Klaatu. The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios...
It was re-released on Capitol records.
The first track, "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" has a bridge that sounds like it was right off of MMT. The organ comes in, and then the voices begin with "please come in Peace we Beseech you..." It is here where it actually sounds like John, Paul, and George but mostly Faul.
After the musical interlude, the Faul -like voice finishes out the song with the Walrus electric piano standing out like a sore thumb.
This song was also released as a single by the Carpenters. The alien who comes to bring peace to earth in the movie was named Carpenter.
Another song, very "Beatle-like, is "Sir Rugglesby, in which the vocalist sings like a drunken sailor and tell the tail of "the only man who's ever been to hell and come back alive". The overall quality of the entire album is superb and is often sited on audiophile sites as an A-plus recording. Apparently there were big bucks behind this production.
Regarding Syd Barrett: In 1966, Pink Floyd was essentially a back-up band for Barrett. Both Lennon and Paul/Faul were fans. (Lennon actually met Yoko at a Floyd concert).
And Faul/Paul, showed up at at least one Floyd concert heavily disguised. Syd apparently had the ability to write hit singles on the spot, and for a six month period, wrote enough songs to "fill a few more albums".
Their first album was recorded at Abbey Road at the same time as Pepper. The Beatles even dropped in to encourage the Floyd on at least one occasion. Norman Smith, a Beatles engineer, was the Producer...
Many of the sounds surfacing on the subsequent album (Piper at the Gates of Dawn) can be heard on Pepper.
When the album was released, Paul told the press that "You should get it. It's a knock-out"
Around the same time, Floyd mastermind Barrett alledgedly goes "mad" and is replaced. Aside from two very sparcely recorded solo albums, Barrett essentially disappears forever, leaving trails of rumours behind.
Info emerges in the 90's that while Barrett was "insane" and living in his mums basement, he was in fact living in a very posh London motel, recieving visitors the likes of David Bowie, Robert Plant, Robin Trower and so on.
Personally, I always felt that he didn't like the music bizz (evident in his"crazy" behavoir and statements given in rare interviews) and became a ghost writer.
There are other theories I have about him but I wanted to just put out the info here, and allow you some time to let these seeds grow.
Vet grateful to have found this site. Thanks!
