Sorry to start a new thread on this, I could not find one in clues all the way back (maybe I missed it)-
But, I bought and am listening, with great enjoyment, to "The Best of Bowie". And, I have to say, hearing "Ziggy Stardust" sung, I felt like, well, its a distinct possibility that he is at least referring to JP sideways.......dunno, but, makes me wonder.......maybe he did it subconsciously.

I'd say he did purposely. But I agree, that song does sound like it's refering to Paul.

I also just bought that CD as well, last week - strangely enough. I think there could be several connections to Bill in many of DB's songs. I am listening to several of his songs and it really makes you wonder. "Ashes To Ashes" comes to mind. I think this is a good topic to introduce, Doc'. Thanks esp' to Valis, I am becoming more of a fan of David Bowie's songs and ideals. It could be he's trying to say something in his music and his lyrics are worth looking at closely, I think.

Its so interesting of late, because, its as if my whole life I was only half listening to songs, Bowie, Doors, Stones, Creme, Macca, Moody Blues, etc., and now (and not just lyrics) for the first time I am hearing the other parts of the actual music. What's wrong with me? Wake up, purpleDoc. Anyway, hey, vaggie, haven't spoken in a minute--Ill get over to ETpal soon..........

What's wrong with me? Wake up, purpleDoc. Anyway, hey, vaggie, haven't spoken in a minute--Ill get over to ETpal soon.......... Hi, Doc! I hope to see you there soon. I've heard all of the artists you've mentioned a lot on radio or CD's. But it's interesting how paying close attention to the lyrics can really offer insight into their meaning. Although, some songs are soooo out there - it makes you wonder if there is any real meaning or context behind them at all. Sometimes I think they're just ummm....well, totally wasted or something. But there's something to be said for paying closer attention to lyrics in some songs. It's also a good way to learn about how artists put they're songs together. I google lyrics sometimes before I've heard a song that I've read about - just to hear how it reads before I actually hear the songs melody, tempo or whatever. I like some of Fleetwood Macs lyrics. What I didn't know was that they were a Blues-based band before they became famous. I've heard a few of those earlier songs and they're pretty good. Ummm, getting back OT here, I really wonder if there could be like, song "interplay" between artists about Bill's replacing Paul. David Bowie sings Space Odyssey... ? And then Bill comes out later with, I dunno, Listen To What The Man Said. Coming Up?! Bad example, I know! But the idea that artists could be having a muscial back-and-forth with Bill in some of his songs is just an idea I'm wondering about. Sort of a larger musical puzzle. A call and response. Musical song jamming... Any thoughts?!

The name "Ziggy" may be a reference to the "Ziggy" cartoon "eggmen" Lennon drew in vast hordes in the Magical Mystery Tour cartoons. These are supposed to help in portraying the real story of James Paul McCartney.
The MMT cartoons appeared in 1967. These eggmen look close to the "Ziggy" cartoon character that first appeared in the USA in 1969.
1967 --eggmen McCartney
1969 --Ziggy makes his appearance, resembling the eggmen
1972 --"Ziggy Stardust" code lyrics about McCartney
"Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders (Beatles) from Mars" "Lady Stardust" (Hey Jude television show, "Jeni Crowley"?)
I wonder what the creator of the hugely successful "Ziggy" character thought of David Bowie using the name of his character for album and song titles?
Then there's Ziggy Marley, hmm ... Ziggy sounds something like "eggy" or could stem from "Zygote." He was named after his own fertilized egg?

Interesting.... I never gave the lyrics much thought. I didn't need to get the Best of Bowie coz I've already got all the cd's that they got the songs from. I'll have to check that out. I was reading some reviews & shoppin' around & noticed 2 live re-releases. "Stage" from 78 got great reviews across the board.... "David Live" from 74 got awful reviews sayin' his coke overload at the time was painfully obvious..... So I ordered both of'em! I thought it would be good for a laugh.... So now I've got 4 live Bowie cd's to go thru.

I just realized something strange..I only know 2 songlyrics ever using the word "Suffragette" and they're Bowie's Suffragette City and Wings' Jet. The more curious thing is that the 1st was released in June 72 and the 2nd in July 73..some sort of call-and-response or 'coincidence'.
"Was Your Father As Bold As A Sergeant Major? "(Pepper/Tom) "The major (Tom/Sgt.Pepper) was a lady Suffragette (metermaid??)."
Maybe I totally lost it now but I got a feeling there's something there.
All Love Jan

SUFFRAGETTE CITY
Hey man, oh leave me alone you know Hey man, oh Henry, get off the phone, I gotta Hey man, I gotta straighten my face This mellow thighed chick just put my spine out of place

CHORUS
Oh hit me!
CHORUS

JET
Jet! Jet! Jet! I Can Almost Remember Their Funny Faces That Time You Told Me That You Were Going To Be Marrying Soon. And Jet, I Thought The Only Lonely Place Was On The Moon. Jet! Jet!
Jet! Was Your Father As Bold As A Sergeant Major? How Come He Told You That You Were Hardly Old Enough Yet? And Jet, I Thought The Major Was A Lady Suffragette. Jet! Jet!
Ah, Matter, Want Jet To Always Love Me? Ah, Matter, Want Jet To Always Love Me? Ah, Matter, Much Later.
Jet! With The Wind In Your Hair Of A Thousand Laces. Climb On The Back And We'll Go For A Ride In The Sky. And Jet, I Thought The Major Was A Lady Suffragette. Jet! Jet!

After I put in the Metermaid reference in my last post I looked up those lyrics again...now my brain hurts like a warehouse...it's almost as wild as a Pete Townshend novella
All Love Jan
---------------------------------------------------------------
Lovely rita meter maid. Lovely rita meter maid. Lovely rita meter maid. Nothing can come between us, When it gets dark I tow your heart away. Standing by a parking meter, When I caught a glimpse of rita, Filling in a ticket in her little white book. In a cap she looked much older, And the bag across her shoulder Made her look a little like a military man. Lovely rita meter maid, May I inquire discreetly, When are you free, To take some tea with me. Took her out and tried to win her, Had a laugh and over dinner, Told her I would really like to see her again, Got the bill and rita paid it, Took her home I nearly made it, Sitting on the sofa with a sister or two. Oh, lovely rita meter maid, Where would I be without you, Give us a wink and make me think of you.
