Hey Southpaw, I think you & TI could both be correct on this. True, JPM did the alchohol & speed thing in the early days in Germany, & they all like smoking weed. (but reefer doesn't count) And it's quite possible that JPM could have indulged in a few lines of coke from time to time. But that is most likely where it stopped with JPM. There's a big difference between the people who take that next step & start shooting heroin & the ones who don't.
Personally, I've been a partier for most of my life. From the hippie days to my punk band days & onward. Over the last few decades I've been ready to try almost everything a few times, but NEVER any needles & NEVER any heroin. Very few of my friends over the years have ever taken that next step. And I've never been tempted to...... ICK!
So you've got yer regular ol' partiers who enjoy a few drinks & reefers. Maybe an occational upper when needed. Then ya got the crazy few who take that next step to shooting up crap. Us regular partiers tend to look down on those loosers as we're tokin' & drinkin'. Those junkies are in a totally different world & us regular ol' partiers usually want nothing to do with them.
So I'm thinking JPM was one of those regular ol' partiers. Nothin' wrong with a few drinks & a few reefers, but we all know John went on to be a bit of a junkie for a few years..... Big difference.

Eyesbleed, my question about the musicians that crossed the line to the hard stuff would be, how did it affect their work? How was it obvious that they left behind the world of being "regular partiers"? When a group is going into the downward spiral of heroin use, the work just doesn't get done, or it's a shadow of it's former self if they manage to crank something out at all IMO.
As for the other PBW video, they are wearing sunglasses there as well, it just takes place in a studio. The only real notable thing was how it showed JP's lip scar and broken front tooth so clearly.

There were many well-known rock stars who took the plunge into needle usage, and I expect that if we weren't around them from time to time we wouldn't have known the difference until they reached the point of it taking control of them. Members of the Stones were junkies, most notably Keith Richards, and Eric Clapton was too...but as far as those of us who were their listeners, we couldn't tell because we weren't exposed to many of them enough to see it. They carried on with their musical work, but if it wasn't for tabloid news reporters who followed them around bugging them for interviews and photos we probably wouldn't have known about several of them. Thankfully many of them were able to kick the habit before it took their lives, but others weren't so fortunate. I'm just curious, eyes, what's the difference between reefer and weed? I thought reefer was just another name for it, like pot or bud. Perhaps I misread your post but it looked like you may have been differenciating between the two...hehe. (Actually I see now that you were simply saying that reefer didn't count because the subject is HARD substance, not hemp.) Incidentally, I used to roll for the doobie brothers before the band was ever heard of ;D No, I'm not talking about Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, Keith Knudsen, Michael McDonald and crew...I'm talking about Kurt, Nick, Lance, Bob, Mark, and Larry...the band of brothers that hung out in high school...we called ourselves the doobie brothers as a code name, when the band came out about 2 years later we were totally freaked out. There were some in our school who thought it was us they heard on the radio playing Listen To The Music because most of our little band of partiers played instruments HAHAHA. "HEY! I KNOW THOSE GUYS!" HAHAHA. We were so surprised by it that we weren't quick-minded enough to have a little fun with it when we were first approached. We ended up changing our code name to the bong brothers after that ;D Of course we had to learn a couple of Doobie Brothers tunes to play on our guitars when we were in the party mode ~~`

I shoulda just stuck to one term referring to the herbs.
