They're playing the tape they got of the White Album flown overnight from England before it had been released in the US. They thought the title of the album was "Happiness Is A Warm Gun". Interesting: some of the mixes aren't the same as what we know of it, but it's about 99% the same. A mono mix.

Not that I noticed. Some of the harmonies seem more clearly delineated (oddly enough), and Mother Nature's Son had a slightly longer melodical ending, I think. I'll listen to it again later in the week. (I'm taping the show right now.) I'll tell you if I find anything of note.

Here's the actual November 1968 broadcast of that, and I was listening at the time! The first hearing in the US of the White Album, to the best of my knowledge. Bob Lewis was one of the WABC DJs, and his show was identified by a jingle based on the song Babalu's Wedding Daywww.youtube.com/watch?v=BR0NqnDYtCIThe jingle went: ♫ Bob Lew- Bob Lew lew lew Bob Lew- Bob Lew lew lew Bob Lew- Bob Lew lew lew The big Bob Lewis Show♫ But who was "Babalu"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babalu_(song)"Babalu is the title of a Cuban song, written by Margarita Lecuona, the cousin of composers Ernestina and Ernesto Lecuona. The song title is either a reference to the Santería deity Babalu Aye or to Babalawo, the title of a Santería priest and diviner. In the song's lyrics, the singer wonders aloud what to do with a statue of Babalú Ayé, now that a Santería rite had been invoked by others. He suggests that seventeen candles be lit up, in the shape of a cross, and that a cigar and aguardiente be brought to him, as to pay homage to the deity. He then requests good luck, love from his beloved woman, and safety and protection to both. The song was first published in the United States in 1939 by Peer International. The first publication with an English translation (by Sydney King Russell) was in 1941. Babalu was the signature song of the fictitious television character Ricky Ricardo, played by Desi Arnaz in the television comedy series I Love Lucy, though it was already an established musical number for Arnaz in the 1940s as evidenced in the 1946 film short Desi Arnaz and His Orchestra. By the time Arnaz had adopted the song, it had become a Latin American music standard, associated mainly with Cuban singer Miguelito Valdés, who recorded one of its many versions. Arnaz made the song a rather popular cultural reference in the United States...." Desi Arnaz - Babalu www.youtube.com/watch?v=OukLUt1c_lsaka "Bee Bop - A -Lu- La" ?

OMG has this been a hoot! And it has never sounded better! So many ROFL moments: Dan Ingram introducing "My Maria" as "Diarrhea", and Charlie Greier - after a lengthy commercial for Mexana soothing foot-cream lotion - saying, "OK, now that your feet are all soothed, let's do some stomping with 'The Bristol Stomp'!" Loving every minute of it, but I'm feeling a mad compulsion to get a tan, clear my zits and buy clothes and furniture! Here's the link: rewoundradio.com/ WABC Rewound is this weekend: Saturday, Sunday and Monday! ;D
