Have we been ignoring the obvious?
I mean, for gosh sakes, it's the Ringo song that's introduced as being sung by Billy Shears, which leads me to my walk home from work tonight.
(NOTE: I'm NOT suggesting that Paul wasn't replaced. Merely that Ringo may have been as well)
I rarely listen to pre-67 beatles stuff on my ipod, because it was all hard-panned in the mix and sounds weird on headppones, and it's even more rare that I listen to the really early stuff at all, actually. For some reason though, today I listened to Past Masters Vol. 1, and was caught completely off guard by how different Ringo sounds on Matchbox.
When I got home, I immediately compared it on proper speakers to A Little Help From My Friends, and I believe that these songs were sung by different people.
First of all, the stronger, more confident voice is on 1964's Matchbox, while the 1967 Ringo is barely on key and very tentative.
Second, the vocal on Matchbox comes from the throat, while the vocal on ALHFMF comes much more from the nose.
I'm not even going to get into photo analysis at this point, or any of the other RWR clues, because I think these two vocals stand on their own.
What do you guys think?
Fingo?

Well it has been speculated that it was sung by a JPM vocal imitator, then slowed down to sound like Ringo. Not necessarily my opinion but it would explain the nasal sound.

Yes, the Dezombificator wrote about that early on at TKIN.

They were all replaced, including Ringo. Starting with Sgt. Pepper's. It wasn't so much that they were replaced as in "kicked out", but more that they, George Martin and their other handlers found four guys to replace them because the Beatles wanted to move on with Apple Records and other projects. And that's what they've done. They all went into semi-retirement and work only on the creative projects they like.
You can see Ringo's double in the Let It Be movie and in the Rooftop Concert video. I do think that Pete Townsend might have played Ringo in Magical Mystery Tour (the movie). "Ringo" clearly has prosthetic cheekbones and a chin like Townsend's in that.

The best thing about this post is that I have no idea if you're serious or not, but I would imagine that it's really hard to fake that kind of intellectual ambiguity. I'll play along though, but mostly because I'm bored. Here's Townshend in 1967. And here's Ringo in MMT.

I think one of the Pauls became a Ringo.
