Right under this: The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it. send pm/ <--- ignore icon

You guys are quick..
Just trying it out, didn't mean to cause any alarm.
Not an uncommon feature of many boards, although in Proboards it's not built in.
What are your thoughts? I suspect those who feel every word they type should be seen by all will feel chagrined.. Those who feel annoyed/bothered by certain posters will feel relieved.. But human nature being what it is, most won't be able to leave someone "ignored" for very long, as they would be too curious anyway.

I'm on my work PC now, and I'm able to ignore you all with extreme prejudice. ;D ...Except the mods of course. ;D Yes, that is correct. If you use Firefox P(D)enny, it should work, I have no problems. From the writer of the code: support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=codedatabase&action=display&n=1&thread=70474This code will put a button in each user's profile, that, when clicked, will cause you to ignore that user's post/pm/calendar entry. If you are ignoring someone, anoter button is put in their mini-profile which, when clicked, unignores them. You can set it up so admins, gmods, mods, and custom groups are not ignored by entering their group number in the cannotIgnore variable. All ignore info is stored in the cookie so if you delete your cookies or use a different computer, your ignore list will not be available.

This feature is working very well on ATS where there is a very large Paul is dead thread. It's needed more on forums where the main topic is something more general, like ATS, whereas on PID/PWR boards the mods can ask the obnoxious members to behave or ban them if they get too out of line.

True enough DH, we are small and can provide more personalized service, but it's still not possible to be here all the time either. But, if people feel like "oh no, I can't believe you guys would do this, I HATE it, etc", then.. It can go away. However, since someday soon Proboards is going to version 5, with numerous new features, I wouldn't be surprised if they throw this one in anyway, but I'll check.. Hard to dig that info up from the support board.

Cool. You can even ignore yourself. ;D
Here's another Pro-Tip:
Run Firefox with the Adblock Plus add-on. Not only does it block most banner ads, but you can also block any avatars or signature images you don't like.

Can the admin use this ignore feature to do a clever trick on trolls? My idea is that the admin have a global ignore to set for certain annoying people. This doesn't just leave a message saying you are ignoring so-and-so, it actually hides the posts from the threads as if they don't exist. It also hides threads started by the ignorees. But the ignores doesn't work on ignorees themselves. So they think what they are posting is being seen by all because they can see their own posts. Eventually, when noone replies to them they'll get bored and leave. However, kicking trolls off (the old way), they just come back again and again. See the potential here? BTW, some posters can't be ignored I've noticed such as jojo. Also, guests can't be ignored it appears.

I'm sure some clever coder could do that, but there is no way to do what you are describing using this. That would be a little bit underhanded for my taste anyway..

Still seems to be flukey... Is it tied to IP numbers by any chance?
Ignoring only papers over the problem of course-- these true believers can be very dangerous.
A somewhat prominent BEATLES fundamentalist recently admitted to me that he suffers from severe debilitating mental illness. And keep in mind that is not someone who spends their free time stalking BEATLES researchers like the fundie inmates over at the Macca Nuthouse; this is someone whose pursuits are far more outwardly stable.
I still don't understand why these dangerously unstable stalkers are allowed to post their telepathic fantasies here, but it is what it is... I understand another former poster here was recently locked up for his delusional threats... I'm not sure when/if he was banned or if a killfile would have helped matters... Hopefully these fundamentalists will get the mental health care they need before they get violent.

Tied to a cookie actually. A board like this is not like Usenet.. Surely you see that, moderating your own?
The poster you mention crossed a line pretty quick, even for here where the goal post is set pretty far. (as some may feel) Went on an anti semitic rant that was pretty brutal.. (banned, yeah) He went on to threaten to kill Barry on another board soon after.. Guess you know how that turned out for him.

Jo, there's a certain nutbag who seems pretty keen on calling me a nutbag/mentally ill fundamentalist. The problem is, the ignore icon isn't appearing on TotalNutbag's profile. I'm running the latest Firefox on Windows XP. Can you help?

I dunno, this code is a java based thing that is grafted on top of the board's main software, and as such, it may or may not work. I thought it did what it claimed to do, but after some experimentation, it does indeed only catch a small length of time, not every single post.
So.. we're back to square one.. Two posters who are at each other, both adept at the turn of the phrase. Hmm..

Rule 1 of the Forum Rules says, "Please, be tolerant with other people's points of view and other people's work. Disagreeing and discussion is welcome, but all in a friendly way. We don't like bad language and we don't like name calling." We can manually ignore trolls and trashers, but what happened to Rule 1?
