What changed around 1985?I don't quite know. That seems to be the date (more or less) that the 'dead' Paul is supposed
to have returned from his trip across the universe, according to the script.
I'm not enough of an Illuminist to get the complete picture of what this all represents,
but the idea seems to be that Paul - as a parallel to Jesus going to secure "the kingdom"
for his followers upon his death - returns at about that time, having made the journey to
Saturn depicted in the movie "2001, A Space Odyssey".
Having met with "the Father"/Saturn, he is reborn, as a spiritual entity and returns to Earth.
Hence, "No one ever left alive in nineteen hundred and eighty five (when he returns) will
ever do". Or: "A good friend of mine (a good friend of Paul's substitute)
studies the stars" and reports that "Venus and Mars are all right tonight".
Jimi Hendrix - 1983 (A merman I should turn to be)
The hints suggest a return in the mid-80s, and hiding out "under the sea, in an Octopus's garden".
So (in "the play" at least) he's Neptune, or Saturn, or Poseiden, or Osiris, or whoever.
In any case, having returned as the "glorified" version of himself -
("I've seen religion from Jesus to Paul")
he is free to make appearances after 1985, or so, and to "inspire" the works of his
physical doppelganger, Faul, who is, in some way, his brother.
Or you can just ignore all that, and say he never left, but then, as I said earlier, all the clues
become relatively meaningless.
Sorry I don't have a better answer. The "crashed car" returns in the 1980s. Check out the start
of the video. (I guess they didn't have a white VW available.)

Saturn and the Sun are, alchemically, interchangeable, because supposedly, in the fifth dimensional
manifestation, Saturn is like a sun. In any case, to "sail into the sun" as in Yellow Submarine,
is to sail through the black hole/portal into the fifth dimension.
So the journey alledgedly made by Paul was that of a third dimensional soul making the
journey into the fifth dimension, and then returning as one having "graduated" to that level.
The dead (black) carnation / "dead man" of the third dimension, having been born into the fifth,
and "coming alive" having figuratively ascended the stairway to heaven, and then descending,
as shown in the video for "Your Mother Should Know".
etc etc blah blah
The Nat Weiss video that tafultong posted suggests that the parallel identities of Paul and
Jesus Christ were deliberate, because Brian appears to be calling Paul "Jesus Christ" in the letter:
and of course, the journey itself is the one made "on the wings of a nightingale" (imo)
(Heck, it's Easter time, ya know. Tonight's the observance of Pass Over.
Gotta get all this seasonal stuff out there on time. )
Oh, and I'm not tafultong, in case you were wondering.
