lol, B While some take it that the Christmas tree is a Christianization of a pre-Christian winter rite, in particular the Donar Oak and Saint Boniface, others see its origin in the "tree of Paradise" used as a prop in the medieval mystery plays that were given on 24 December, which as well as being Christmas Eve is in some countries the day of the liturgical commemoration and name day of Adam and Eve. To suggest the Garden of Eden, a tree decorated with apples (to represent the forbidden fruit) and wafers (to represent the Eucharist and redemption) was used as a setting for the play. Like the Christmas crib, the Paradise tree was later placed in homes. The apples were replaced by round objects such as shiny red balls. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_tree

In my own research, I've read that the "Fir" tree was the idol used in Scandanavia, where in places like Egypt, it was more like a palm tree used in worship.
Most of the traditions of Xmas predate Christianity and was practiced for hundreds if not thousands of years, tracing back to Babylon....
So thinking about this, if the Holiday tree predates the time of the birth of Christ, why are the athiests and other religious groups getting so upset? If people would do the research, it's something pagans practiced long, long ago...
People will make it what they want it to be, sacred or just something traditional....

I couldn't find a Happy New Year thread, so the Merry Christmas thread will have to suffice.

15 birthdays today.yourliver, imarealguy, crystal, bsregistration, samsab, LOVELYRITA, persephone, apollocreed, canyoutakemeback, tomdrums, whammo, rims, illumccartney, ronpaul, thepiper [glow=yellow,2,300]Happy Birthday, LOVELYRITA![/glow] You're the only Taurus I know whose birthday is in Capricorn, but that explains a lot, actually. I mean, a goat and a bull = a bully goat. You don't look a day over 29, really. Of course, neither does Faul. OK, he does. I admit it. But Dick Clark still looks as if he's 40, even if he sounds like he's deceased. Well, in any event, the aliens are coming to your house to celebrate. Wildly Pulsating UFO December 28, 2011 PA + BONUS COP FOOTAGEwww.youtube.com/watch?v=m7RvY_YAB4MAnd Happy New Year too! Note: Nothing in this post is intended to offend. It is based on the fact (I think) that LovelyRita once told me that she is a Taurus, and I remembered that because Tauruses are often known for their sense of humor. However she reminds me very much of a Capricorn friend of mine (also named Rita), whose birthday is day after tomorrow, so I may be somehow confused about all of this. It's not really ronpaul's birthday, but persephone may not be a phoney, regardless of the perseption. Who can tell anymore? Best wishes LOVELYRITA, whoever you are. If people would do the research, it's something pagans practiced long, long ago... People will make it what they want it to be, sacred or just something traditional.... Some families around the world have started the "sacred tradition" of putting up an Oprah manikin with a green poofy bad-bridesmaid dress and plastic sparkly rhinestone tiara. Family members decorate her with different, special ornaments that you can buy only from Oprah's "O" catalog and magazine. Many of the ornaments depict Oprah as Mrs. Santa with a bag of goodies, or Oprah as a heavenly angel, or Christmas bulbs with her face on it. You can get Christmas stockings with "Oprah" hand-stitched and some of Oprah's special philosophical phrases written all over them like "Pass the cheesecake--please" or "Does this make me look fat"? The presents are all Oprah-approved. For example, any books you buy have to be on her book list. You can have a brand new flat screen TV, but it only comes with the Oprah channel 24 hours a day... The remote control only has 1 button for men--the Oprah button which turns on the Oprah channel and doesn't shut off. But for women there are multiple buttons for an orgasmic experience when watching Oprah. You can get CD's with subliminal "feel-good" messages personally spoken by Oprah herself. All clothes are from her own personal fashion line and have her signature written all over. All toys are "educational" in nature designed to teach and indoctrinate children about Oprah while they are young. You can even buy perfume and lingerie with Oprah's scent! All the presents lay under the altar of Oprah's green poofy dress, just like a real Christmas tree. They are seen as gifts brought down from heaven by Oprah herself! ;D
