More stage-setting... ULTRA-COLD BROWN DWARF DISCOVERED?LinkDiscovery News Analysis by Ian O'Neill Sat Mar 12, 2011 08:48 PM ET Not to be outdone by the Keck II telescope in Hawaii, NASA's infrared Spitzer Space Telescope may have discovered a brown dwarf even cooler than the brown dwarf Discovery News reported on last week. Keck spotted "CFBDSIR J1458+1013B," a brown dwarf 75 light-years from Earth with a mass of 6-15 times that of Jupiter, and from observations realized that this very dim object must have a temperature of less than 100 degrees Celsius (212 F) -- about as hot as boiling water. This discovery has very important ramifications for star and planetary physics, because a brown dwarf is neither a star or a planet, it is an object that bridges the gap between planets and stars. For this reason, and because brown dwarfs do not possess enough mass to sustain nuclear fusion in their cores, that they are often dubbed "failed stars." So, the potential Spitzer discovery of an "ultra-cold" brown dwarf has excited scientists even more. Spitzer's candidate brown dwarf, detected 63 light-years from Earth with a mass of approximately seven times the mass of Jupiter, appears to have a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius (86 F)! This "room temperature" brown dwarf is called "WD 0806-661B." Interestingly, WD 0806-661B orbits a white dwarf star (called, unsurprisingly, WD 0806-661) and could be considered an exoplanet. But it orbits at a huge distance: 2,500 AU -- or 2,500 times the distance between the sun and Earth. For it to be a planet, it would need to be orbiting far, far closer to the white dwarf. However, there is another possibility. This white dwarf star was once a star two-times the mass of our sun. White dwarfs are what remains of an old star after it has run out of fuel and died. Indeed, our sun has a similar fate in approximately 4 billion years time. After it has run out of hydrogen fuel, puffed up as an angry "red giant" and swallowed the Earth as it expands, our red giant sun will eject its outer layers, leaving a white dwarf shining in the core of the resulting "planetary nebula." (I've written about this fascinating scenario before: "What Will Happen When the Sun Turns into a White Dwarf?") Models predict that once the sun has shed huge quantities of mass after its red giant phase, the remaining planets of the solar systems will drift into wider orbits. Is this what happened to WD 0806-661B? Was it once a very massive planet orbiting a star twice the mass of the sun? Further measurements of the object are obviously needed. The discoveries of CFBDSIR J1458+1013B and WD 0806-661B (if it is indeed a brown dwarf) are unprecedented; they could represent a population of low-temperature brown dwarfs that have more "planet-like" than "star-like" characteristics. They are so cool in fact that water vapor in their atmospheres could condense to form clouds of water droplets. Brown dwarfs that are capable of this belong to a specific "Y"-class family of these objects. Y-class brown dwarfs have only been theorized, but these two new discoveries are prime Y-class candidates.

Preparing for something? The ghost towns of China: Amazing satellite images show cities meant to be home to millions lying desertedBy Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 10:53 AM on 18th December 2010 These amazing satellite images show sprawling cities built in remote parts of China that have been left completely abandoned, sometimes years after their construction. Elaborate public buildings and open spaces are completely unused, with the exception of a few government vehicles near communist authority offices. Some estimates put the number of empty homes at as many as 64 million, with up to 20 new cities being built every year in the country's vast swathes of free land.Much more, including loads of satellite photos at the link.

Pontious Pilot whales? Today... 30 whales stranded on Bruny Island
March 17, 2011 8:14PM
A POD of about 30 pilot whales have become stranded on Bruny Island, south of the Tasmanian state capital Hobart, wildlife authorities say.
Department of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Liz Wren told the Hobart Mercury newspaper that 12 of the whales were still alive with people on the beach trying to move them back into the water.
"Preliminary reports indicate around 30 whales have stranded with some believed to be still alive," a statement from the department said.
Initial reports indicated they were pilot whales.
Whale strandings happen periodically in Tasmania, but scientists do not know why they happen. Meanwhile... Whale suicide linked to Christchurch quake February 23, 2011, 1:39 pm
The beaching of over 100 pilot whales on a New Zealand island has been theorised as a possible link to the devastating Christchurch quake.
According to AFP, the remote Stewart Island off the south west coast of New Zealand's South Island was the scene of a mass whale suicide two days ago.
Hikers reported seeing 107 whales lying lifeless on the sand. Many were found dead, and a remaining 48 were euthanised by the Department of Conservation due to poor conditions for refloating.
Whale beaching is common in this region of New Zealand, although theories that its timing was an ominous foretelling of the destructive seismic activity have surfaced. On Twitter Kate Redman 'DolphinSeeker30' asked: "could the stranding of 100 pilot whales be linked to the earthquake?"
CodeNameTanya tweeted: "Over a hundred pilot whales beached themselves in New Zealand and then the earthquake. Wonder if tectonic plate shifts confuse whales. Hmmm."
VeganWheekers asked: "Could there be a connection between the 107 whales that died on New Zealand beach yesterday and today's earthquake?" while TV New Zealand added: "has anyone noticed the correlation between beached whales and earthquakes?"
Following the discovery of 30 stranded pilot whales on the island earlier this month, RadioLive breakfast show host Marcus Lush tweeted that an earthquake "greater than five" would hit in the next week.
Scientists are unsure why pilot whales beach themselves, although they speculate it may occur when their sonar becomes scrambled in shallow water or when a sick member of the pod heads for shore and others follow.
Another example of whales beaching themselves en masse prior to an earthquake occurred in 2004. Around 170 whales died in Australia and New Zealand in the months before the underwater earthquake in the Indian Ocean that resulted in the Boxing Day tsunami disaster that killed 230,000 people from 14 different countries.
Reporting on the theory, the Mirror UK mentions Dr Arunachalam Kumar, a professor from India, who believes there is a connection between the beaching of marine mammals and earthquakes.
"It is my observation, confirmed over the years, that mass suicides of whales and dolphins that occur sporadically all over the world, are in some way related to change and disturbances in the electromagnetic field co-ordinates and possible realignments of geotectonic plates thereof. "I would not be surprised if within a few days a massive quake hits some part of the globe." he said, three weeks before the tsunami in 2004.

Your sky all hung like jewels The killing time Unwillingly mine Fate, up against your will Will March 19 'Supermoon' Trigger Natural Disasters?
On March 19, the moon will swing around Earth more closely than it has in the past 18 years, lighting up the night sky from just 221,567 miles (356,577 kilometers) away. On top of that, it will be full. And one astrologer believes it could inflict massive damage on the planet.
Richard Nolle, a noted astrologer who runs the website astropro.com, has famously termed the upcoming full moon at lunar perigee (the closest approach during its orbit) an "extreme supermoon."
When the moon goes super-extreme, Nolle says, chaos will ensue: Huge storms, earthquakes, volcanoes and other natural disasters can be expected to wreak havoc on Earth. (It should be noted that astrology is not a real science, but merely makes connections between astronomical and mystical events.)
But do we really need to start stocking survival shelters in preparation for the supermoon? [Photos: Our Changing Moon]
The question is not actually so crazy. In fact scientists have studied related scenarios for decades. Even under normal conditions, the moon is close enough to Earth to make its weighty presence felt: It causes the ebb and flow of the ocean tides.
The moon's gravity can even cause small but measureable ebbs and flows in the continents, called "land tides" or "solid Earth tides," too. The tides are greatest during full and new moons, when the sun and moon are aligned either on the same or opposite sides of the Earth.
According to John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Washington in Seattle and director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, particularly dramatic land and ocean tides do trigger earthquakes. "Both the moon and sun do stress the Earth a tiny bit, and when we look hard we can see a very small increase in tectonic activity when they're aligned," Vidale told Life's Little Mysteries, a sister site to SPACE.com.
At times of full and new moons, "you see a less-than-1-percent increase in earthquake activity, and a slightly higher response in volcanoes."
The effect of tides on seismic activity is greatest in subduction zones such as the Pacific Northwest, where one tectonic plate is sliding under another. William Wilcock, another seismologist at the University of Washington, explained: "When you have a low tide, there's less water, so the pressure on the seafloor is smaller. That pressure is clamping the fault together, so when it's not there, it makes it easier for the fault to slip."
According to Wilcock, earthquake activity in subduction zones at low tides is 10 percent higher than at other times of the day, but he hasn't observed any correlations between earthquake activity and especially low tides at new and full moons. Vidale has observed only a very small correlation.
What about during a lunar perigee? Can we expect more earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on March 19, when the full moon will be so close?
The moon's gravitational pull at lunarperigee, the scientists say, is not different enough from its pull at other times to significantly change the height of the tides and thus the likelihood of natural disasters. [Infographic: Phases of the Moon Explained]
"A lot of studies have been done on this kind of thing by USGS scientists and others," John Bellini, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey, told Life's Little Mysteries. "They haven't found anything significant at all."
Vidale concurred. "Practically speaking, you'll never see any effect of lunar perigee," he said. "It's somewhere between 'It has no effect' and 'It's so small you don't see any effect.'"
The bottom line is, the upcoming supermoon won't cause a preponderance of earthquakes, although the idea isn't a crazy one.
"Earthquakes don't respond as much to the tides as you'd think they would. There should actually be more of an effect," said Vidale.
Most natural disasters have nothing to do with the moon at all. The Earth has a lot of pent up energy, and it releases it anytime the buildup gets too great. The supermoon probably won't push it past the tipping point, but we'll know for sure, one way or the other, by March 20.

A brand new near earth object, and it was discovered by Apostolos Christou.
Apostle of Christ...Match made in heaven: Earth finds new companion as giant asteroid joins its path around the sunBy DAILY MAIL REPORTER Last updated at 9:44 AM on 7th April 2011 Earth has found a new companion that has joined its orbit around the sun, scientists have revealed. It may not have the most romantic of names, but Asteroid 2010 SO16 could pursue Earth for anywhere between the next 120,000 to a million years. And at a few hundred metres across, it is the largest space rock ever discovered so close to earth. But there is something unusual about SO16, say Apostolos Christou and David Asher who discovered the giant floating rock last September at the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland. Rather than follow its new friend all the way round, SO16 orbits the sun in a horseshoe shape, playing a constant game of catch up with Earth, they say. Now quicker than Earth, SO16 speeds round its shorter orbit until it catches Earth again and is this time pulled away from the sun, slowing it down. More simply, from the point of view of the Earth, the asteroid has a horseshoe-shaped orbit, constantly moving towards and away from the Earth without ever passing it. But from the asteroid's point of view, it orbits the Sun continuously in the same direction, more quickly in smaller orbits and more slowly in bigger ones. Christou and Asher say this process is repeated over and over again until the asteroid dies. At the moment SO16 is travelling at one of its closest approach points and will be visible in the evening sky for several decades to come.
