no, no, he did wear sandals at first. you can see that on quite a few photos. and they look stupid. my point is, how would you know if it was so hot that you couldn't walk on the asphalt? It's london not california... fact is: he did not were shoes. fact is: he wore sandals and kicked them of. fact is: abbey road was recorded during the summer. everything else is just speculation. No, pay attention! This is not rocket science! Of COURSE, everything concerning this subject matter is speculation. That goes without saying. People who claim to KNOW or who claim to be SURE of anything are fooling themselves. Sandals do not look any more "stupid" than severed dolls heads covered with blood. Wearing sandals isn't any more "stupid" than taking LSD and discussing it publicly. The Beatles, as I said before, for better or worse, were trend-setters, and it makes no sense to suppose that none of them would wear a pair of sandals just because some viewers might find them to be "stupid". But even if he wore sandals to begin with, he wasn't photographed wearing them in the final cover shot. He was photographed in bare feet. Hot weather will lead to hot asphalt whether the asphalt is in London or California. That's just a law of nature. You're arguing out of both sides of your mouth. You say, "It's hot. That's why he took his shoes off, to feel more comfortable." Then when you're asked why he would feel more comfortable walking on hot asphalt in his bare feet. you turn around and argue, "Why shouldn't he? It wasn't hot." If walking around in bare feet was the best way to ESCAPE the effects of the heat -- rather than EXPOSING oneself to them -- then why aren't the others also walking around in bare feet? I agree completely. And once again someone is trying to have their cake and eat it too. It makes no sense to say he wore sandals because it was hot then decided to kick them off because they were ugly. If Paul was concerned about his footwear for the album cover he would have put on proper shoes to begin with like any rational human being.

What if he took the sandals off to be er...noticed? Well, yeah. He's Paul McCartney -- at least ostensibly -- and so no one would notice him at all if he wasn't barefoot.

What if he took the sandals off to be er...noticed? Well that is kinda the point. There's a clip of Lennon in the IAAP movie saying something to the effect of That's just Paul being himself. He likes to have one red ear or something just to throw people off.

Who remembers "Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman?
Remember the indian who walked backwards, bathed with dirt and said goodbye when he meant hello?
In the "Strawberry Fields" video we Paul jump off a tree branch and walk backwards, the other Beatles also walk backwards which is then played backwards making them look like they're walking very strangely.
I am thinking this is just more of Paul acting out Crowley's admonition to walk, talk, play records backwards etc. Taking off your shoes on hot asphalt makes about as much sense as bathing with dirt IMHO.
I wish I could find that LBM scene on YT, I may need to rent it now. Of course Paul and Dustin's friendship shortly after that movie was released adds a bit to the intrigue.
Astounding the amount of supposed "coincidences" involved in this PID stuff, all perfectly explainable of course...

At Strawberry Fields, originally an orphanage .

Look into the eternal garden
Lay upon the shore of the distant island
Listen to the sea bird's song
Of joy
Who do you owe it all to?

I also wonder if Crowley wasn't just giving his own nod to Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky with the whole backwards thing, or did Carroll employ this to occult effect as well?
So much of it relies on one's powers of perception and how much a person uses them and intuition. Perhaps it is all just a guise to get us to gaze inwards.

How interesting also that many of these clues and strangeness only emerged after technology improved? Take the "Magical Mystical Boy" for example. Nobody was going to find that unless they perceived it when it aired on television or in a movie theater. Even then they couldn't prove it was there until at least the advent of the VCR.
I first saw MMT in the early 80s at a Beatles movie fest in Manhattan, I certainly never noticed it then. And I was pretty versed in the PID since the 70s.

I think the bare feet, appearing as though someone about to be buried what with the 'parts' it looks like the others are playing, speaks of his replacement, as in "leaving the band", "departing", whether permanently or not.
To me, it isn't a lie so much as it is an esoteric, cryptic statement for us to commiserate over.

Or were they trying to impart something more?

If they were just implying he was in the role of a corpse, being barefoot, that would have been what was shown, but the fact that he's smoking has always suggested to me that he was back from the dead, and having a cigarette. Dead men don't smoke. Or then again, the message could have been: smoking will kill you.
