We checked in with Ritzy Bryan, the lead singer and guitarist for the Welsh rock
band the Joy Formidable.
READING
I’ve been gobbling through a lot of crime novels by George Pelecanos
on this last tour. He’s a superb writer; the books are very readable
without being oversimplified, and you get completely drawn in to the setting,
the plot and the characters that he so shrewdly develops.
I’ve also been trying to fill some gaps in the classics department.
But I sometimes think I didn’t miss much.
Like “The Mill on the Floss” by George Eliot is still great literature, yes,
but that ending. I was disappointed in the ending.
LISTENING
I’m liking Foster the People’s new album, “Torches.”
It’s melodic and catchy for the summer months.
I’ve been going back to a lot of ’50s rock ’n’ roll: Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly.
And I’m obsessed with Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” soundtrack,
it’s just brilliant, the collection of movements and flow of tracks,
every song is just perfect.
WATCHING
The last film I watched was “I Love You Phillip Morris,” which I thought
was underrated. It’s about a homosexual couple that meets in jail.
It’s poignant and tragic yet still manages to be funny and playful.
The last film we saw as a band was “Predators” — big, teeth-gnashing aliens
that want to kill everybody. We’re not apologetic for enjoying a little bit
of trash from time to time.
FOLLOWING
The excellent RadioNowhere.org is an online independent radio station run
from a tiny little farm in Norfolk, England. The guy who set it up is American,
and they have themed programs that might feature new bands or music in films.
If it’s good, they’ll find it. And I like the blog thevinyldistrict.com, which talks
about vinyl and rarities and general music news.
SHOPPING
I love vintage clothing, furniture, toys. Atomic Warehouse in Harrisburg, Pa.,
is my favorite find of the year. It has four floors of all types of furniture in all
styles and time periods, lamps, all these ’50s style fans, jewelry ...
nothing in there isn’t superb. We bought a 1930s bottle opener that played music
and had a big face on it. We gave it to a fan at our show in Harrisburg
as a souvenir.
CONSUMING
I’ve just discovered Asiago and artichoke dip in Vancouver.
Once you start, you forget how much you’ve eaten until you see the empty pot.
And Real Brew Draft Root Beer. I’m licking my lips.
