The Australian Geoff Elliott, Washington correspondent September 05, 2005 US President George W. Bush is facing a political crisis that could swamp his second-term administration and undermine support for the war in Iraq as the blame game over the Hurricane Katrina disaster starts. Mr Bush is facing fierce criticism, even within his own party, over his administration's preparation and response to the disaster in New Orleans when levees designed to protect the below-sea-level town failed, as many predicted they would if a storm the size of Katrina swept in. Yesterday, intensified relief efforts saw the mass evacuation of survivors from the streets of New Orleans. An eight-hour operation cleared the Superdome football stadium and the convention centre of the thousands of people who had been trapped since the hurricane hit on Monday. About 10,000 survivors were flown out of the New Orleans airport to cities across the southern US in what has been described as the biggest airlift in the nation's history. But as people fled the once-vibrant capital, estimates of the death toll were still rising. Louisiana officials yesterday were citing more than 10,000 possible deaths in the city.

This looks like the first thing that could stick to the Teflon Presidency, but I still have my doubts. Bush always seems to come out of things apparently rosier than ever. Then again, the media actually seems to be hammering him on this instead of serving as the White House's PR department.
Time will tell.

I was watching Bush in Mississippi and N.O. this week-end.
I would hope that someone would tell him to take that silly ass grin off of his face! There is time and a place and this was not the time or place.
He told the people gathered there and the cameras that he 'understood' how they felt! No he doesn't! He could never understand and should be told by his handlers not make that kind of statement! You can be empathic toward a persons dire situation, but unless you are there and lived it, you could never understand what these people have suffered through!
I hope this crises will finally make people wake up to the situation we face in this country and the rest of the world. If Osama Bin Laden and his terrorists were watching TV in their little caves this past week-end, they were no doubt rubbing their hands together and salivating at the notion that we are protected by Home Land Security!
We can only hope hope that don't act on this situation we find ourselves in!

... And things like this happen because instead of focusing on the needs and problems of his own people (remember a president is *supposed to be* the representative of the whole country) he's focusing on what the neighbour does. The same thing on a smaller scale just as an example, but imagine instead of fixing your own roof, you spend your time throwing stones to your neighbour's roof. When the rain comes, you're going to get your house flooded. What happened in NO breaks my heart, but mostly makes me terribly mad, because we can't prevent hurricans from happening, but we CAN prevent people from dying. Maybe you need to rethink your choice next time there's elections in your country.

I don't know that we have the luxury of waiting till the next election....as I've said... if we do that, I have my doubts there will even be a next election. If they're able to get away with this brazen mass murder in N.O., I think they be confident enough to do god knows what.
I was really hoping that this would wake enough people up. Some folks who thought the rumors about 9-11 could not be true, might see what happened in N.O. & rethink that conclusion & go back & check out a couple of dvd's by George Humphrey or Alex Jones, & read a book or 2. But I heard on our scripted future they call the news that only 10% of republicans have a problem with the way things were handled & 10% of dems don't have a problem with the way things were handled. THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT! I thought his overall positive ratings about now would be sunk to about 15-10% but they say there is very little change in his approval rating.
Of course ya know that when his approval rating hits 10%..... everybody better duck!

actually you're right. waiting until the next election is not something you should do, as a country. it's obvious to me and anyone with half a brain that that "guy" is not representing the country. it's not just that he doesn't care about the people, it's as if he wanted those who he doesn't like to die!! one thing that got my attention when i went there last year is how the basic needs are the most expensive things of all. i mean BASIC things, things that should be the cheapest, like medical care. for pete's sake, i got sick and i had to spend a couple of hours at the hospital to get a pill and they charged me 500$ !!! crazy!!! you know how much that is in other countries? nothing! because medical care is a basic need and should be FREE! nowhere else in the world you will find (not that i know of at least) an old lady having to choose between meds and food like i saw! the poor lady was looking at the box of pills and told the guy she seriously had to choose between food and meds. and now one of the poorest areas in the US needs IMMEDIATE help.. well... it's been a week and i don't see the help going there. is it? is it going there and i'm missing the rescue operations? am i missing anything? yeah, i feel strongly about this.

...sick and i had to spend a couple of hours at the hospital to get a pill and they charged me 500$ !!! crazy!!! Wow... so you can afford american health care huh! Yer treated better around here than me then! I'm a self employed guy who can't afford insurance because of this & that........ so I'm screwed. This country that I've been payin' taxes into & workin' my whole life... never collected unemployment... ever.... sez too F****in bad to folks like me & every bill Bush pushes thru makes it considerably easier for the elite & harder for millions like me. ......Destroy the middle class..... But I was thinkin' about this non elction thing... no.. not the show that was 04 but 08. The main thing slowin' down my Furher is the millions & millions of americans armed to the teeth. I've always been a hippie type & decidedly more left, & non violent.... so that also meant anti guns & NRA etc. But now... because of the sheer brazen don't-give-a-****-about-the-cattle-that-elected-me attitude of my Furher, I'm just about ready to get my first weapon..

I'm glad to see Bush hasn't let the crisis ruin his vacation! In a related note, his wife keeps referring to it as ' Hurricane Corina' It's nice to know she's been keeping up on current events.

This country that I've been payin' taxes into & workin' my whole life... never collected unemployment... ever.... sez too F****in bad to folks like me & every bill Bush pushes thru makes it considerably easier for the elite & harder for millions like me. ......Destroy the middle class..... that's another thing that i can't understand. how in the most powerful country in the world (and blah blah) can people not have health insurance, unemployment and retirement?? you work all your life and when you want to retire (or are forced to) you're left with the money you've been able to save during your work life? it's nonsense. you've said it, the government is up to destroying the middle class there. why? i don't know, because it's obvious that they fail to see the middle class is what makes the country work. i know that's happening with a lot of other people too. and to be honest with you, if i had to live there (if i had no other choice, that is) i would feel forced to buy one myself. the idea of someone entering your house in the middle of the night and you being left defenseless is not something anybody would want. because sadly, being robbed is the least bad thing that could happen... what is crazy is that that could happen. of course there's crime everywhere in the world, but people don't go around with guns everywhere in the world! in all my life here i've never ever been robbed. ever. i can walk home at 3am knowing nothing will happen to me. can you say the same? when did that happen? how can you not feel safe in your own country?!?! it's crazy.

you've said it, the government is up to destroying the middle class there. why? i don't know, because it's obvious that they fail to see the middle class is what makes the country work. . Maybe in a free market economy, but these bastards don't want a free market economy. Bush sez one thing... does the polar opposite. If there is only the elite few at the very top point & literally everyone else is poverty stricken way way down there, then the elite are that much safer & protected. Kinda like an economic mote without a draw bridge. I've about had it! Where I live (Odessa) is pretty much a blue collar city... Midland, next door is the white collar city & SOOOO proud to be known as hometown of the Bush's & play into this movie-set-like charade our "down-home-good-ol-boy" leader has goin'. I am not exsaggerating here.... at least one car out of three has a W'04 sticker on it. Now..... why the hell did all these middle class people vote for Bush....TWICE? Their slow strangulation by Bush is in the news almost daily.. And why the hell did all these conservatives vote for Bush? Massive spending, massive central gov't, & trampled states rights & constitution..... yep sure, that's what conservatives want. I'm just totally amazed at what's goin' on & what Bush has been able to get away with. These bastards or their families should not be able to go out in public EVER without knowing people are gonna be there ready to attack them by the thousands.

This you can thank the neoconservatives for. As for their alleged "free" market... I run a small Ebay based business and I can tell you this; It's only a free market if you have a ton of money to sink into it and can outsource your work. I'm from Mississippi, a little town Randy - MacNally forgot, I saw more Bush/Cheney bumper stickers plastered all over the place than I could believe. This is as blue-collar a town as you could ever hope to see..
