I noticed this 10 years ago or more when looking for something else, and surprised in all this time I've never seen anyone else mention Lennon's preoccupation from 1966 (starting with Nowhere Man) and ending in 1968 (ending with Across the Universe).
He speaks about 2 subjects almost exclusively. Water, and the colours Yellow and Green. If something's a colour it's either one or both of these. If it's Water, it's rain, streams etc. Death also comes up on certain occasions within this body of compositions preoccupied with these subjects.
RUBBER SOUL is where it starts. I believe the last song written by Lennon for the album was Nowhere Man, but one can find the first subject coming up. Isolation and/or Death. It also marks the conclusion of his 3 song Jealousy Arch. With ever escalating violence and or threat to the betrothed. Whomever this may be.
And so begins water/death being linked throughout a number of songs. So many one would think all Lennon had on his mind was this.
RAIN If the rain comes they run and hide their heads. They might as well be dead. If the rain comes, if the rain comes.
I'M ONLY SLEEPING When I wake up early in the morning, Lift my head, I'm still yawning. When I'm in the middle of a dream, Stay in bed, float up stream. (as opposed to two years later, when he can't sleep, he can't stop his brain)
SHE SAID SHE SAID She said, "I know what it's like to be dead. I know what it is to be sad." And she's making me feel like I've never been born.
AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING You say you've seen seven wonders And your bird is green, But you can't see me, You can't see me!
TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream, It is not dying, it is not dying. And ignorance and hate mourn the dead, It is believing, it is believing. But listen to the colour of your dreams, It is not leaving, it is not leaving.
LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees and marmalade skies Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
(alternatively McCartney appears to be doing otherwise --- I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in And stops my mind from wandering Where it will go. )
I AM THE WALRUS Yellow matter custard dripping from the dead dog's eye. Crabalocker fishwife pornographic priestess. Sitting in the English garden waiting for the sun. If the sun don't come you get a tan from standing in the English rain. I'm crying.
By THE BEATLES (1968) he's done with this. GLASS ONION Standing on a cast iron shore, yeah. Fixing a hole in the ocean, Trying to make a dovetail joint, Looking through the glass onion.
Where before he'd drink a cup from Dr Robert and it's time for tea and meet the wife, in 1968 he wants no more I'M SO TIRED I wonder should I get up and fix myself a drink, no, no, no.
He seems far from water later on as in Glass Onion: JULIA Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me. So I sing a song of love, Julia. Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me. So I sing a song of love, Julia.
If he mentions any colours now, it's black and blue. Blue skies for Dear Prudence, blue mist around his soul, black cloud on his mind. But in a fantasy moment, the King of Marigold comes out. When the rain returns it falls on the sheepdog
Sheep dog standing in the rain, Bullfrog doing it again.
Any mention of water later is now Muddy. Unclear. He got Muddy Water.
The sky is again blue, it makes him cry.
Any boat he has can be syndicated, sold and mass distributed, on repeat. Well you can syndicate any boat you row. Yes you can syndicate any boat you row.
Probably the last true Lennon Water song is Across the Universe, as it was written before THE BEATLES began recording. So Nowhere Man until Across the Universe marks this state of ...
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup, They slither while, they pass, they slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind, Possessing and caressing me.

Green...It occurs in nature and during the burning of various chemical substances, as well as in the form of the extremely infrequently observed “green ray” of the rising or setting sun. It is a symbol of illumination, and is associated with life and death. The alchemists also saw the so-called secret fire, which was “the living spirit,” in the image of a green, translucent, and fusible crystal. As explained in greater detail in The Quest for the Celtic Key, the colour green also shows up with a remarkable frequency involving Grail symbolism, as in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, the hermit Trevrizent has a green shrine or reliquary. Guinevere's robes are described in Arthurian legends of being an emerald or malachite green colour, and, of course, the Emerald Tablets of Hermes were green, as is one of the dimensions of the Celtic 'fairyland'. Druidic neophytes were known to have worn green robes, and women described as 'fairies' in medieval ballads are often described as wearing green. An emerald sword appears as the very sword used to behead John the Baptist in certain Grail stories, in others, it is the very object quested for by Sir Gawain the Green Knight. In Islamic tradition, El Ehidr, the Green One, wears a robe of shimmering green, and is said to be the guardian of the source of the Waters of Immortality. Even in the Wizard of Oz, we have the 'Emerald City', the wizard's home. So perhaps it's not surprising that, like the Grail legends, the colour green itself eventually became "suspect" to the Church, as it was associated with the dead, witches and fairies, and brought with it the familiar superstition that green is somehow "unlucky". This was the opposite of how the colour green was seen in ancient times, (¹) as then, the image of the Green Man symbolized a "portal" to the Otherworld in a symbolic sense, a connection between humanity and nature.

Intersting thoughts, VG. I've seen you touch on this before. It's definitely there.
In addition, For whatever it's worth: It seems to me like about half of his early work seemed to focus on isolation to one degree or another. Either with the hopes of the girl to help him out of it, or the girl being responsible for putting him into it, or some combination of the two - sometimes with more than one girl involved in the story. Sure, it’s not as extreme as it becomes in the mid-60s, but it could be argued that he was gradually leading up to that point with his earlier work. Particularly in such cases as I’m A Loser, No Reply, I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party, Hide Your Love Away and Help!. In It Won't Be Long he complains of sitting alone while everybody else has fun. Even There’s A Place is about retreating into one’s own mind, where there is no sorrow. A song which some believe laid a lot of the groundwork for his entire catalog.
Seems to me like his first allusion to death, although thinly veiled, is in Yes It Is. Is his former lover in this song dead? Does the color scarlet remind him of his dead girlfriend? Many believe that is what it sounds like. It’s not even a stretch to consider that Baby’s In Black could be about his new lover’s dead boyfriend.
I’ll admit this one is a stretch, but the way he says “life is very short” in We Can Work It Out, seems like a precursor to his fixation on death.
Granted, he was fixated on his mother's death.
I’ll Cry Instead, twinged with bitterness, jealousy and revenge, could be considered a warm up to songs like You Can’t Do That and Run For Your Life.
And, for what it’s worth the color green is featured in the song You Can’t Do That. Though yes, it is in reference to the ‘green with envy’ metaphor.
I noticed you didn't list Yellow Submarine, the grandaddy of 'em all. From what I can gather it was written mostly by Paul, with some help from John (?). And what of Norwegian Wood (this bird has flown), which alludes to wood, fire and air - though he crawls off to sleep in the bath (which he does in the AHDN film, w/toy submarine).
I also noticed that Paul’s songs tend to touch on to a sense of eternity or immortality. “You say you’ll be mine, girl, ‘till the end of time”, “A love like our will never die”, and “both of us thinking that love never dies.”
And Eric; that's the Eric I know!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I've said this for years and always gotten the .................................................................... It just seems no one notices it. I started noticing it in other artists as well, particularly with colour mentions. One that stands out is Trevor Rabin (ex-Yes) Over a decade, the only colour he liked to talk about was Crimson. If it's a colour, and in a Rabin song, it's crimson, end of.
And I just find that interesting to no end.
Will definitely get back to you on the replies, it's just nice to have people respond to it after a decade saying does no one notice this, and what's going on in Lennon's brain? Why is he so preoccupied with Death, Water and Yellow and Green.

And I did want to include Yellow Submarine as that's a huge one, but I was unsure whether that was all McCartney, or a combination of the two. You know honestly over the years, I thought Lennon wrote that one. And I seem to remember that story of him tripping and seeing a yellow submarine on the ceiling, which inspired the song. That was the story I knew about its creation, so I always thought that was a Lennon song. Now they say it's mainly McCartney.
I'll have to check into that, because yellow and green and water is all over that one, and by lyric association alone, I'd say that was all Lennon lyrically, if not musically. Cuz the dude was preoccupied!!!

A plumb-bob or a plummet is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, that is suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. The instrument has been used since at least the time of ancient Egypt[1] to ensure that constructions are "plumb", or vertical. It is also used in surveying to establish the nadir with respect to gravity of a point in space. They are used with a variety of instruments (including levels, theodolites, and steel tapes) to set the instrument exactly over a fixed survey marker, or to transcribe positions onto the ground for placing a marker.[2] It sometimes causes even kings to shrug. On the Tree of Life, as can be seen in Paul Foster Case's version above (this is the standard used for societies such as the Golden Dawn of which Crowley belonged), the 1st 2 paths emerging from Kether כתר correspond to Aleph א and Beth ב, at least according to European Occultists. Here they are attributed to the Major Arcana of The Fool and The Magician, both of these paths correspond to the colour Yellow. The Tree of Life's roots are it's branches, the Supernal Triad to which these belong are 'behind' or 'under' appearances. Ultimately, this is where we all live. The path connecting Wisdom (chokhmah חכמה) to Understanding (Binah בינה) corresponds to the letter Daleth ד, which means a 'Door', along with The Empress (or, the Queen). She is represented by the colour Green. Binah בינה, to whom she acts as a bridge from Chockhmah חכמה is traditionally thought of as the Great Sea, hence, a Sea of Green is fitting. The path that leads between Chokhmah חכמה and Binah בינה like the vertical line of a cross and acts as a bridge between Beauty (Tipheret תפארת) and The Crown (Kether כתר) corresponds to the letter Gimel ג, and The High Priestess. She is represented by the colour Blue. Every thing below, or in this case, above, the Supernal Triad is thought to flip in relationship to it like a mirror. The Masculine side becomes the feminine below this point and visa-versa. If we were to be as far out to look at the 1st 2 paths as a Yellow SUB, than this path could be viewed as a Blue BUS. "The Blue Bus is callin' us, driver where you takin' us?" - Jim Morrison. This Tree is said to revolve like the planets do: from this intriguing blog beingthere723.blogspot.com/2011/09/sync-freud-jung-lust.html

something else to consider Cry Baby Cry, John tells of the King of Marigold, which would be a variation on the color yellow.
Though I didn't look up Kircaldy, is that Irish, then the land of Green would be a play on words as well.
This is interesting to revisit this subject. Green is the color of money, yes, for the American Dollar, which had been the monetary unit used worldwide. However, green is the color of envy.
Though he lived a life of fame and fortune, and women, there seemed to be a solemn sense of being alone and lonely, and perhaps a bit envious of the "everyday man" who could live his life as he wished and not be under a looking glass, of sorts. Not being under the public scrutiny.
This sounded like a man who was not happy with his life, whether this was the real John Lennon's heart, or whatever, it seems to reflect a man who was not truly happy and the color green is not always associated with goodness or happiness.
Another song that had not been mentioned, Yellow Submarine....though not sure of the true meaning of a yellow, submarine and not sure if the color yellow was representing the "sun" or sun king...though that could be taken into thought. Also when thinking of yellow, as teeth, or something that had been white, or blonde and yellowed because of smoking, or sickness, as jaundice, a liver disease...or yellow in the whites of eyes...yellow matter custard...not exactly the image of health...indeed sickness and oncoming death.
Water, and rain in the context of the above-mentioned songs reflected sadness, sorrow, death, and passing away...it had a depressing feel to it.
So it seems that fame, fortune and even an abundance of bed-fellows, doesn't make a happy man. He sounded quite somber and realism rather than a fantasy play on words.
