Beatles Album Cover For "Yesterday And Today"
A rich, die-hard Beatles fan will soon get his or her bloody hands on what's being touted as "the rarest Beatles record in the world": a prototype of 1966's "Yesterday…and Today"
album, with the original "butcher cover" signed and illustrated by John Lennon.
The controversial cover, which was quickly replaced by a more conventional band photo, is also autographed by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions expects the album to fetch more than $200,000 in the online sale. Bidding is already halfway there. The reserve price—the minimum that the seller
will accept— will be revealed November 4 at 7 p.m. CT.
The pre-production LP belonged to Lennon, who gave it to collector Dave Morrell in 1971 in exchange for a reel-to-reel bootleg tape dubbed "Yellow Matter Custard."
Lennon wrote "To Dave from John Lennon Dec. 7th 71" in ink at the top of the album. On the blank back cover, he drew the outline of a man holding a shovel, with a dog gazing
at the setting sun behind them.
Little did Lennon know that the scrawled date was one day and nine years shy of the night he would be murdered in New York.
