They attempted to make "A Hard Day's Night" in tv format, but these guys did not have the charisma or talent of the Beatles. It was natural for the Beatles, but for these guys, or any of the other teenybopper bands who attempted to make a film like this, they just looked awkward and hokey.
The Dave Clark 5, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Herman's Hermits are three I can remember with their flicks. The only thing I remember out of all of them was in the Herman's movie, Peter Noone was in a space suit singing "Hold On, Hold On".....
Rather forgettable..Peter Noone...

Nevertheless, those "actors" were able to learn to play on their own, just goes to show you it can be done.. Thanks goodness Harry Nilsson didn't get a part, would probably have ruined his career.

Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were musicians when they auditioned.

But the popular recordings were done by session musicians. When they wanted to perform live, withtheir own playing, they were not nearly as good as the recordings.
Sometimes the image of a band is better than the real thing...in this case...

Sometimes the image of a band is better than the real thing...in this case... Closet Monkees fan here..... I think their best records are the ones recorded after they fired Don Kirshner. They really proved themselves in my book. Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, and The Birds The Bees & The Monkees, and Head are all wonderful albums. They all still get played occasionally around here. The first 2 "commercial" albums are the ones I can do without.
