Yesterday I listened this song called SUBSTITUTE by The Who. I've run a search to know what year the song was written and I found that it was from 1966 (I couldn't find which month of that year). Here are the lyrics: SUBSTITUTE by The Who You think we look pretty good together You think my shoes are made of leather But I'm a substitute for another guy I look pretty tall but my heels are high The simple things you see are all complicated I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah Substitute your lies for fact I can see right through your plastic mac I look all white, but my dad was black My fine looking suit is really made out of sack I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south And now you dare to look me in the eye Those crocodile tears are what you cry It's a genuine problem, you won't try To work it out at all you just pass it by, pass it by Substitute me for him Substitute my coke for gin Substitute you for my mum At least I'll get my washing done Any comment?

Deja Vu, we talked about this one way back in the day, and I think the same thing happened, it was brought up that the date was a little too early.
Still like to know what's being talked about, what situation. Could be a guy who's girl who sees the guy she's with as someone he knows he's not.
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
What strange town is this, or a metaphor?

A town that the north border, or side of it, and the east side facing south, maybe that is like Washington D.C., a square which is rotated 45ยบ from an upright square. KInda of orbirtrary how you decide which border is the north one, but in a way I guess this could apply. Also, at least I'll get my "washing done" sounds like Washington. A bit.
A stab in the dark, people.
I look pretty tall but my heels are high......hmmm......

Ok, the date does not match but the whole song fits perfectly with Paul's death. It's like the song was written for this stuff.

Yes eyesbleed, maybe this was the first song ever written about the replacement by another band, everything's match but the date............

Here are two more very interesting The Who lyrics from 66
DISGUISES (recorded jun/jul 66)
I used to know everything about you But today when I tried to point you out to one of my friends I picked the wrong girl again Don't see you in the crowd anymore I think it's you but I can't be sure You're wearing disguises Occasionally a girl surprises me When she turns out to be you Wearing disguises
I don't think you want me to see you ever again And today I saw you dressed as a flower bed Last week you had a wig on your head Directing traffic in the street And your shoes were too big for your feet You were wearing disguises Occasionally a girl surprises me When she turns out to be you Wearing disguises
[repeat first verse] Wearing disguises Wearing disguises Wearing disguises Wearing disguises
I"VE BEEN AWAY (recorded nov66)
I've been away so long Wonder where I went wrong Spent my last years in a cell Never ever go away again I've been so sad and lonely Never ever ever gonna go away again
It's a waste of time doing time When you dind't commit a crime It wasn't me it was my brother Bill And I'd have to tell never gonna speak to Bill again He's made me sad and lonely Never ever gonna speak to brother Bill again
It was no use, they put my brother on the jury He bribed the others 'cause he owns the local brewery They let me out today Brother Bill's gonna pay No one's ever gonna speak to Bill again Never ever gonna speak to Bill again He'll be too cold and bony Never ever gonna go away again Never ever gonna go away again Never ever gonna go away again

Thanks Valis!!! Wow!!! The last one you posted fits like a glove, the date it was recorded, Bill........... I'm asking myself what kind of relationship this band had with The Beatles. I know that Keith Moon was John's friends and they recorded some things together along with Faul in LA in 1974 and Keith ended dead, also John BTW- I'll try to find the pic of the three together, I posted it on the 60IF forum time ago

Right... our interest in PID lore and what really happened in '66 has nothing to do with a dislike of the artist known today as Paul McCartney. I think most of us here are fans of him.
We're just too often confused with the other forum.

I find myself utterly facinated with Beatle Bill of late. It follows that we'd all get around to him eventually. Moral judgements are not for me, I leave that to those who think they could put themselves in the place of all involved. Guess what, you can't!

And, JoJo. I second that! I too am coming to see the different facets of a man in such an unusual, but blessed, position.
Fate, or history, or Providence, had provided William an opportunity that is pretty much unheard of.
And, it's a position that from the start was filled with potentials and possibilities, and remains so to this day.

...Fate, or history, or Providence, had provided William an opportunity that is pretty much unheard of. true. Anyone remember the Milli Vanilli scandal? I don't blame those young guys (Rob and Fabrice). The one who "should've known better" was (producer) Frank Farian

Another possible reference to Bill, being "born with a plastic spoon" in that he probably came from humble beginnings.

I'm still not sure of the Tara Browne ( Guinness heir) connection but these lyrics I posted earlier in this thread from The Who's "I've Been Away" really make me wonder:
"It was no use, they put my brother on the jury He bribed the others 'cause he owns the local brewery"

It almost sounds "Confessional". Even though it speaks of a "Brother Bill"..it almost seems like self-pity in a way. Maybe Bill having feelings of guilt, but changing the context so it reads like Bill's the bad guy and the person in a prison cell is who? Paul...I don't know if that makes any sense at all. Maybe it's just a way of telling the story in a very suttle way. I don't think Bill did anything deliberately wrong by replacing Paul. Maybe it's like, written from Bill's perscective. He's about to put himself in a prison (Playing the role of another person's identity), then his old life as Bill get's to go free. As in, Bill is freed from his old identity but imprisoned by his new role impersonating Paul. Maybe that makes no sense, whatsoever. I'm just wondering if Bill had a hand in writing it.

This song is about Romany Faul. Lyrics: I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated.
I look all white, but my dad was black (Romanies call themselves black-blooded.)
I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth (Faul's poor background.)
