Here's an idea: Leave well enough alone. Whoever put those symbols there had a reason for doing it, and 120 years ago they knew stuff we know little about today.

Oh, you may have misunderstood. My error. I wasn't threatening your posting of this. I meant that if you change things on the house, things that may have been held in check (ghouls or whatever) by the symbols may then be free to access your abode. That may sound silly to you, but it is what gargoyles and such things are all about. I am not a mason, but I know that in times past they - in particular - incorporated symbols into the design of buildings. You might want to talk to one about the practice to learn more about the why and wherefore, before making any changes to your place.
