this is the closest thing to knighthood in the US, focused on creative ppl and whatnot. DORIS DAY received it a couple or few years ago... it's Brian Wilson's turn this year. this sort of cements his status in the status quo and seriously diminishes whatever slight chance remained he would speak out on what he knows... (they're playing it on CBS now in the East, the ceremony was a few weeks ago)

You're right, this is the US' way of placing someone in "elite" status..above and beyond regular "celebrity". When a person has been "sealed" with recognition such as this, it truly tells they are part of the elitists and not subject to "spill the beans".
I find it a peculiar thing he would have achieved such status, being that he's most known as being a "Beach Boy".

I think when he finally finished Smile & performed it live in 2004, that may have sealed the deal. I've always been a B.Boys fan but I'm a much bigger Brian Wilson fan than I was before after seein' that amazing Smile concert dvd & bonus documentary. If truth be told, I'm probably a much bigger Beach Boys fan than Beatle fan, so I certainly think Brian deserves this honor. It's about time!

The CRAZY Beach boy at that! Ya, but when ya listen to any of the Beach Boys songs that were written & recorded without Brian, it becomes pretty obvious who's got the award-winning talent. FYI, the documentary that comes with the Smile dvd sure is a good film about that crazy Beach Boy & the creation & recreation of Smile.
