here's the lyrics of a special song by Beck especially for you
Special people all the time Special people on my mind Special people brown and white Special people getting all uptight Special people kiss my soul Special people take control Special people lick the ground Special people word up and down Special people squeeze the breeze Special people slice their knees Special people soak up fire Special people climbing higher Special people create belief Special people steal some beef Special people don't need your plans Special people got recycling cans Special people got songs to sing Special people are happening Special people stopping fast Special people hauling ass Special people are so sincere Special people got special beer Special people flick the grease Special people come in peace Special people will scrimp and save Special people will never bathe Special people in hot pursuit Special people got the boot Special people sleep in moss Special people got the sauce Special people open wide

I took the train.. Really! Well, I had to fly to Cuzco first of course, but wasn't any jet set thing, AeroPeru had an "all you can fly" deal back then, anywhere they went in SA for the duration of a month.
It was a great time, yes there were some problems, but once you adjust to the idea that things aren't going to be like you're accustomed, it's cool. Where else are you going to see a railroad track serving as the "Main Street", it was like the old west. (Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Maccu Piccu)
It's funny, after being in that environment for a month, when you land back in the good 'ol US of A, you notice a tension in the air that you were not even aware existed before.
I think it's not for everyone, although I suppose if you are super rich, you could do this in a way that insulates you from the challenges you may encounter. (and thereby learn nothing)

Sounds cool! But I doubt I'll get there in this lifetime. That must have been a strange experience.

I read that article on Rense, I don't know about the other places, but you don't need to be a jetsetter to travel to these places many times. Takes more a sense of adventure, and you gotta be flexible, because what happens is.. you think in terms of how things are done here in the US, and it does no good to impose your value system on another culture. (or demand that it be so)
I could tell some stories, hehe.. We were stuck in Cuzco for a week until we figured out things just weren't as simple as booking a flight and expecting we could get on...

I would love to hear those stories, Jo. Please, do tell us. Uh oh, now I may just be tempted to bore everyone with pictures from my trip. ;D No, I first have to get a slide scanner, which revisiting this has prompted me to finally do. But anyway, on the second trip there the next summer, (our summer) we discovered that having a confirmed flight from the airline's agent still means you can get to the airport and find that they are sold out, and they don't intend to do a damn thing about it. My friend was a lot better yeller than I, and spoke fluent Spanish, no dice. After a few trips to the airport and witnessing multiple number of people being told they can't get a flight, (ourselves included) I noticed something curious... People would show up with some mysterious "helper", who would go into some inner office behind the counter, and emerge a few minutes later with a ticket, and hand it to the passenger, who would magically have a seat. Aha.. you need to find a travel agent with connections, who then shares part of their very high fee with someone at the airport. This is what we did, although in US dollars, the fee really wasn't that bad. But, were you flying here in the US, would you hand over your money to someone who says they'll meet you at the airport, "and take care of everything"? I mean, it's kind of a funny situation really, the only parallel I can think of here is the buying and selling (scalping) of concert tickets. Much as I loved Cuzco and the cheap rum and cokes, it was getting old, haha.

Especially if you have panoramas of the country and mountainside images, and pics of the town and it's streets. I always liked geography... Well, interesting situation with getting a ticket. Yea, it like ticket scalpers, or paying the maitre d' for the best table in a hot restaurant. I guess in the age when they microchip everything and remove the cash, you won't be able to "grease anyone's palm". You'll have to grease the scanner instead. Eeyewwwwww...........
