OK, it's about time I started a thread so we'll stop disruptin' the "are the same?" thread! So... pickin' up where we left off.... Ya know... we should probably start a music discussion over in OT. You seem really interested in lots of music & I've been a music nutcase & collector since about 1970, so I could probably help some in this whacky quest. There's lots of really good music out there.... yer just not gonna find most of it on the TV or radio. Oh ya.... I finally found my old 3D LP of Satanic Majestys Request. My eyes aren't what they were back when I was a teen!! This may be harder than I thought.... but no time to search now... I gotta run..... 1st real rehearsal of the soon-to-be-legendary Country Dicks! It's about time..... I first came up with the band concept a year ago..! Yeeeee-Haw!

I gotta run..... 1st real rehearsal of the soon-to-be-legendary Country Dicks! It's about time..... I first came up with the band concept a year ago..! Yeeeee-Haw! Good luck with your band, Eyesbleed. And this is a good thread to have where we can discuss all the weird, wonderful and downright interesting artists and groups in music. And just the great acts in general..great idea! I'm a music fanatic and I'm trying to expand beyond all the pop, rock and r&b that I already have been interested in. I'll admit I'm really nowhere near as knowledgeable as some other members here...I am beginning to catch on though. I think. ;D Or maybe not. the more groups I learn about, the more I discover. Caravan (Caveran?) is a group that I'd never heard of before. They're not totally strange, but they sound really interesting to me. The more I read about, and listen to artist like Frank Zappa and some of the odder acts from the 1960's and 1970's from the last millen', it makes me wonder why there aren't more artists like that today. Coldplay is kinda' the biggest band right around right now, or close anyways. I like them, but I don't know if they're that great really..not when you consider all the great acts in music history that have made it big. Maybe not yet. I have also been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder lately. I don't think there are any artists out there that can top "Living For The City".. Or "Sir Duke".. "I Wish". Right now I'm listening to Shoutcast and Stevie Wonder's "Sunshine Of My Life" is playin...oh whooops! Wait! It's over...shooot..now it's uhmm, it's some guy..wait I know I've heard this. It's, it's..it's Neil Sedaka's "Laughter In The Rain". Well that's a classic isn't it? Kinda poppy and really light, but a lot better than some of the songs I hear on top 40 right now. Okay, it's ..ummm..Herb Albert and uhh,, "Rise". It sounds pretty good. I'm just waiting for the words to kick in..ummm, there's a trumpet and uh, wait for it --- there are no words. I guess this is an instrumental song. What was my point?! I just wanted to say that I really love all kinds of music. If it sounds good, I'm totally all for it..but wait! What about the MOI cover..it's pretty funny really. I guess they were really serious about spoofing Sgt. Peppers. Oh, wait! There are some words in the Herp Alpert tune. No wait. It's just laughter.... Anyhooo, that Frank Zappa seems like a pretty unusual artist. But it's a good way to start this thread off, I think. Hopefully everybody will join in with some artists of their own. Maybe there's a really bizarre Carol King out-take or something that nobody's ever heard of. Or a Heavy Metal version of the Bee Gee's "Staying Alive" that nobody's ever heard. Is it possible..I dunno! Now "Sir Duke" IS playing. I just love Stevie Wonder... I guess somebody else can take a turn and post about the bands they like. There must be some XTC fans here. Or L7. The Who? Who's Next?

Who's Next? I can't tell if you are just making a pun, or you just did that by accident, which would be pretty funny. ("Who's Next" being the name of one of their albums)
I'll tell you, I'm watching the original Live Aid DVD from 1985, and Queen just did "Is This The World We Created". Beautiful song, but now it's Sir Paul doing Let It Be. I mean, the audience is thrilled, but the guy seems like he's in another world, even forgetting the words. (just keep saying let it be Bill)
The price of the DVD was worth it just for Queen's performance, Freddie was on fire. Brian May once said that a huge audience like that added another dimension to his performance, and he was one who seemed to engage every member of the audience. There was no "replacing" him, although they are doing just that with Paul Rogers of late.
Of course the groups I listened to growing up, my generational music were the 70's groups, such as Rush, Aerosmith, Led Zep, Yes, ELP, and I'm embarrassed to say, KISS. (but I wasn't a member of the Kiss Army, lol) There are more, but that's the era I come from. Oh I mustn't forget the group that was close to my heart, and it was one that I was proud to introduce my friends to, as none of them had ever heard of it, Mott The Hoople! They were big in the late 60's/early to late 70's, and they underwent some radical changes mid career when they went "glam rock" under Bowie's help and direction. Before that, they had more of a Dylan sound.
The lead singer, Ian Hunter, wrote a book called "Reflections of a Rock Star", and in one paragraph he wonders what Lennon is doing, (probably having eggs Japanese style he says) and then goes on to say "well John, how can you you tell people the truth"....[they don't want to hear it] He also says of Lennon: "obsessive compulsives die just as they lived" (this was in 1972)
Anyway, those are a few of my favorites..

Who's Next? I can't tell if you are just making a pun, or you just did that by accident, which would be pretty funny. ("Who's Next" being the name of one of their albums) I bought that CD, actually. Yes, it was intentional. So I guess,, it's retroactively speaking..not that funny. I've never seen the actual DVD, just clips and videos from it. But it's interesting that Bill would forget the words. Probably he just had an off day or something. Although I read in the article (I think you'd posted) about the GMRTBS era and how he was nervous because he hadn't performed live it years. So maybe that was the reason he sucked that day. I like a lot of the classic rock groups you've mentioned. I only know one MTH song though. "All The Dum Dudes"? I don't know any of their other hit's though. Kiss is kinda so-so for me. That one song "R&R All Night (Party Every Day)"...it's like they sing that line over and over 100 times...did they run out of words? I love Led Zeppelin, Yes, ELP, ELO and STYX as well. Interesting... the comment about John Lennon. I wonder what Ian Hunter meant..by "the truth"

That's a pretty amazing collection. There are some...ummm, interesting bands in your collection. The Beatles list looked the longest from what I could see. Very impressive, Eyesbleed. Btw, I noticed you have 10CC in your CD collection. I knew a couple of their singles and that they formed Godley and Creme. But I found out recently that they were pretty experimental for a rock/pop music group. I might look around to see if they have any CD's from when they made those records.

Nope..... check out the list of Residents. Even if the Beatles were still together, I doubt they have that much stuff released! Btw, I noticed you have 10CC in your CD collection. I might look around to see if they have any CD's from when they made those records. 10CC were definately pop music, but their music was a more intelligent & inventive form of radio pop. It's funny, I haven't played any 10CC in a long time, but they were brought up a few weeks ago on the Residents maillist, so I had to dust'em off & check 'em out. I think their best albums are Sheet Music(2nd LP) & The Original Soundtrack (includes the single I'm Not In Love). I need to get Deceptive Bends added to the collection, but I can't remember much about that album. I think I'll go order that cd while I'm thinkin' about it! There's a big hole in my collection where a few Godley & Creame cd's should be.... some of those are very good, but I'm not sure which ones I'm thinkin' of. All this stuff is on cd & thanks to ebay... even if somethings been out of print (OOP) for years, you can still get a cd from somebody there.

I found a clearer pic of the Stones SMR cover on a site for "the worst album covers in the world" I've taken a couple of minutes here & there to try to find all 4 fabs on the 3D version..... oh man, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to find all 4 or not! This is really hard, but I found all 4 back 30+ yrs ago, so they gotta still be there.... somewhere!

I like a lot of the classic rock groups you've mentioned. I only know one MTH song though. "All The Dum Dudes? Hehe, I got a chuckle out of that one Miss Vagabond, I'm afraid it's called "All the Young Dudes", probably the one that charted the highest for them, and it was written by Bowie. I'd say the song was essentially about the new "glam rock" scene starting then, there was of course Bowie in the forefront, and Queen, who would open for MTH. It really didn't last very long as a genre, although Kiss put on the make up, they didn't really qualify. I should be careful of quoting from memory, here is a scan of what Ian Hunter said in his book, similar in a way, and I do think he was hinting around..

Before that, they had more of a Dylan sound. .. The 70's was a pretty good decade for music. Quite different from the 60's, that's for sure. I started the 70's still a hippie, playin lots of Zappa/Mothers, Capt.Beefheart, some Beatles, & Airplane, & Hendrix etc.... then it shifted to glam thru the mid-70's with Rundgren, Bowie, Steve Harley, T.Rex, Roxy Music, & Sparks. We liked Mott ok, but I'm not sure why they didn't make it into the glam faves list at the time. Then BAM... 79 hit we went to a Devo show & all turned punk, cut the hair & started Research. It was all hard punk for a while until I shifted to more dark post-punk & industrial stuff. OK lets see....never cared for Rush or Aerosmith, I liked ELO's early stuff. The first LP that Roy Wood helped with is the best, 2nd was still OK, but I didn't care for anything after that. The wife was a big ELO fan at the time, so I had'em all regardless of what I thought! I'd like to hear that 1st album again, I can barely remember it. I think everybody must've been a Zep fan back then. I enjoyed them all the way thru, but my fave albums were & still are Physical Graffitti, & Houses Of The Holy. Ya know... I never play those cd's, but I bought that 2 disc dvd of Zep live 69-79 (over 5 hrs) & that is amazin'. I'll put this on fairly regularly, so there's Zep back in my diet again for the first time since 79. Jojo, if ya don't have this, ya really should get it sometime. Well. never was a Kiss fan... but hey... there's gotta be somethin' good about'em coz the guys in Pantera are/were HUGE Kiss fans & didn't mind tellin' ya so. They even toured with Kiss once & they all wore Kiss makeup.... I didn't realize Pantera was capable of bein' that silly. Yep..Pantera... big metalhead here. Not many 50yr old metalheads around west texas. When I go to a metal show I'm like Grampa Jones in my overalls. Now everybody there's even younger than that young'un of mine...(she's 30). Most of her crowd has had kids & left the metal behind. Hangin' out with her friends, I'm like the only up-to-date hipster there! What's up with that? When I was 30 I was in the only punk band between Dallas & El Paso (that's a LONG ways) sturrin' up lots of trouble & makin' lots of noize. Well I dunno... she did borrow my M.Manson dvd last night so there might be some hope for her yet!

Oh ya... Who's Next? Didn't care much for that album... That was when I decided I was done with The Who. But I really love The Who Sell Out... wonderful album, with A Quick One (Happy Jack) comin' in a close 2nd. I guess Quadraphenia was the last one I really enjoyed.
But speakin' of The Who Sell Out..... I just bought a cd by a gal named Petra Haden. She does The Who Sell Out exactly as it is... commercials & all... except every instrument sound is done with her voice. An acappella version of the entire album..... & it's wonderful. Great cd... highly recommended... although not everybody agrees with me coz I've read some bad reviews... but what the hell do they know?

Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out Petra's very good, actually. I think I might pick up her cover of the Who's "Sell Out". I listened to some of her clips and checked out the "authorized" website. She also plays violin, and I don't mind her approach at all. It's different, but really interesting. Most of the reviews I look at were positive. A few said they thought it sucked 'cause it was weird. That was just a couple of opinions, though. There's a woman from a long time ago that I read about who was supposed to be very good, musically. She was a singer-songwriter in the 1960's 1970's.. she played organ and was very gifted and eccentric. I only read a bit about her, but now I forget where I read the reviews about her career. She had an interesting nickname..something catchy but simple, I think. Also, she died when she was about 50 or so. She seemed pretty ummm..spunky, and kind of a recluse. As an artist, she wasn't famous at all, really, but very critically well liked. With a cult following also. I read that lot's of musicians liked her and thought she was great. I think she dated and married a couple of well-known musicians, and might've dated Jim Morrison. Any idea who she is, Eyesbleed? I'd really like to look into buying one of her records if it's even on CD now. If you can figure out who I mean, I'll be totally stunned! ;D

I actually did a search with no clue how to look for her..or how to find her..but I did anyways! ;D She is Nico. Actress, Model, Singer-Songwriter and she was with The Velvet Underground with Lou Reed. I think she was very creative and interesting person and performer from what I can tell. I remembered reading about her. Even though I only read a page or so about her last year in a rock & roll review guide. Even if I couldn't remember her name...I was wondering about her for some reason when I was reading over your list of artists, Eyesbleed. There's obviously a lot to learn about her life as a person, and a performing artist. I'm gonna' pick up a couple of her CD's. I also stumbled across Laura Nyro. I haven't heard of her before. But she seems like she's also very underrated. I'll have to look up her music as well. Btw, this is Nico's website. Put together herself originally before she passed away in 1988. I think she did a great job doing it. smironne.free.fr/NICO/EDIT: NICO- The Marble Index -----------------------------------------------I must've seen this on your list and it reminded me about Nico. Even though it never occured to me at the time who she was. Ummm, thanks for answering my question in umm..advance, Eyesbleed! Before I even had a chance to ask it. Apparently.. ;D

I haven't heard a whole lot of her stuff, I only have Marble Index... it's very gothic & dark & rather stipped down sounding. Actually the only reason I bought it was because John cale produced it. Big John Cale fan here. So I don't know much about Nico except for her Velvet Underground period. That's the best Nico (imo) The V.U. album with the Warhol banana cover.

I read an article online recently where he's talking about writing and playing songs. He said something like (Paraphrases) "1 chord is fine..2 is pushing it, 3 is overkill". That's just too funny for words. ;D

Any idea who she is, Eyesbleed? I'd really like to look into buying one of her records if it's even on CD now. I sure wish that young'un of mine was into discoverin' new music the way you are. She's got access to this massive bunch of cd's & not only could she not care less, but most of'em she'd really rather not have to hear. It's sad really, but I know a bunch of people like that... Anything slightly weird/different/odd & they're like..... oowwww get that away from me!! PLEASE! And I remember my dad telling me when I was a teen that just sittin' in yer room & doin' nothin' other than listening to music was bad. That's not good for ya! .....of course I was playin zappa & The Mothers at the time. I've got this one old friend that, when she stops by... if I'm playin' anything slightly "off" or dark she throws a fit & demands I take it off..... VERY RUDE! Thank god she moved to Austin! So I dunno... I just don't get it. They're missin' out on so much cool stuff.... oh well, too bad.!

Hey PL, you just reminded me of something.... Are there any Sparks fans around here? One of my favorite albums in 1974. Actually, this was my first Sparks album & the only reason I bought it was because of the cover & title. And 20+ albums later, they're still around. They went thru a sucky-disco-y phase in the 80's that I don't care for, along with a couple of really really bad albums, but overall Sparks is an excellent & very original band. Their latest.... Lil'Beethoven is the best thing by those guys in a long while & well worth looking into. Rumor has it there's a new release very soon, so I'm lookin' forward to that. These guys seem to be on a roll these days..... & even added a guitar back into the lineup.... it's about time! They added Dean Menta from Faith No More. He's a great guitar player..... & with Tammy Glover on drums, they're back to bein' a rock band again (sorta) Anyway.... saw the Kimono cover & thought I'd post it. I just remembered the Bill-Sparks connection. In Bill's "Coming Up" video, Ron Mael is one of the impersonations he does..... other than the rather odd JPM impersonation.... We need to find a copy of that vid to download from somewhere!

Okie dokie.... I finally had a little time & found all Sgt.P pics in the 3D cover of SMR. I had to scan my 3D cover coz I couldn't find one that wasn't cropped too much & cut out a beatle or 2 as with the album cover posted a few posts ago. So I sat on the porch in really good afternoon light & found'em. I put a tiny square of scotch tape over each head so I keep track of'em. Each head has a pencil line around it..... George & Billy on the left & John & Ringo on the right. So if ya ever get around to gettin' an original on ebay someday, you'll be able to find all 4 & amaze yer friends & neighbors!

So I was sittin' on the front porch yesterday evenin' enjoyin an aeromatic, foreign smoke & I looked up & there were lots of little poof-clouds that looked just like the little puffs of smoke on the SMR cover.... cool. God musta been takin' a bong break. I finally got the new SACD version of SMR & wow! These cd's sound wonderful. I may have to buy a few more Stones cd's, even tho I'm not a big fan..... just because these SACD's sounds so damn good. One of these days.... maybe.... the Beatles catalogue will be spiffied up like this & re-released.

I mentioned bein' a Zep fan... somewhat, & Jojo mentioned Zep.... pretty much everybody was a Zep fan. Christy & her friends... a generation younger than me, all like Zep. Well.... Zep's fine.... I play the dvd;s now & then..... But I forgot to mention one of my favorite bands... Dread Zeppelin! Great band with several releases. They've been around almost 20yrs. Just imagine if Elvis had've smoked weed instead of takin' all those nasty pharmacudicals(sp) & loved zeppelin & reggea instead of all the vegas type stuff.... you'd have Dread Zep. Their main clain to fame is their albums of almost all Zep songs, but they did one album of other covers including The beatles Golden Showers/Carry That Weight/The End. They're kind of a silly reggea band, but have 2 of the best guitar players I've seen in a while.... the whole band is great. & Tortelvis is an excellent Elvis impersonator.... GREAT voice!! They did one album where the silliness is gone & there's a real reggea guy doin' vocals with Tort. It's actually a pretty serious reggea album & smokes! Deja Voodoo is an amazin cd. The other sillier cd's are wonderful also, but Deja Voodoo kicks ass. Anyway, it just dawned on me that zep was mentioned I while back & I failed to bring up the great Tortelvis & Dread Zep. www.dreadzeppelin.com/

I had mentioned Messer Chups bein' my fave new discovery for 05, so I thought I'd post a thing or 2 over here. MC's stuff is a mix of some loungy-sounding stuff, & some surfy stuff.... most of it has lots of samples.... mostly old B-movie horror films. These young Russians apparently have a love for old western cheese! I like the loungy half just fine.... extreemly inventive & original music, but I made a comp.cd by isolating all the surfy stuff & that's been one of my most played cd's the last few months. Great stuff! In my next band I definately need a bass player as cool & as fine as Zombie Girl! She's got the Betty page thing down........

~ The MONKS ~ Check out this forgotten, innovative band which was way ahead of time. 5 American GI's who came together in Germany in 1964, recorded in 1965, and their debut album came out in 1966. They just blow me away. www.the-monks.com/Be sure to listen and watch their music in the "sounds/disks/reviews" section.
