I've been playing acoustic guitar for a little over a year now, and my parents want to get me an electric one for my birthday.
I really don't know anything about electric guitars, other than I really don't like the way Fender Stratocasters sound. Another problem is that I'm left handed, and while I play my acoustic strung upside down, with an electric I worry if the volume knobs might dig into my arm or something.
Does anyone here have any suggestions about a good brand/type of guitar to get? What about amplifiers?

How much money do you have to play with?
...
Also, have you played an electric with humbuckers? You may like them more the the Strat's single coils...

do you need a scathing letter too, Sir Jo? ;D Yes.. be sure to use words like "incensed", "exacerbated", "piqued", and of course, "nettled". ;D Sorry I don't have any guitar advice, wish I had a picture of the elcectric guitar passed on from my father that I played around with briefly.. Something from Sears from the 50's probably.
