YahooFri Dec 16, 2:43 AM ET WASHINGTON (AFP) - The House of Representatives voted to build a wall along the US border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration. The 260-159 voice vote on an amendment to a bill on illegal immigration "mandates the construction of specific security fencing, including lights and cameras, along the Southwest border for the purposes of gaining operational control of the border. "Fencing has been designated in sectors that have the highest number of immigrant deaths, instances of drug smuggling and illegal border crossings," because of the large number of would-be immigrants who die in the desert attempting to cross the US border. The US border with Canada was not forgotten. The bill "includes a requirement for the Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a study on the use of physical barriers along the Northern border."

Wonderful, doesn't that sound fabulous? Will it have a built in zapper, or just lots of cameras? What about an alarm? When it goes off, will it sound like a car alarm in a parking lot? Not to be outdone by China, we need to spend billions for a Great Electronic Wall. Shoot, they don't need their wall anymore. Why don't we see if they would dis-assemble theirs and ship it over to us piece-meal? We could rename it "The Great Wall of Mexico fromally known as The Great Wall of China." We could use it to hold telecommunications, a water pipe, a petroleum pipe, a mall or two, and a food court near small towns. And a jail for all the folks tryin' to break in. Will this one day, keep us out of Mexico? Oh, and build one along the Canadian border as a second project? Keep them Canooks up there where they belong. Do I sound cynical? About a fence to keep Amercans inside? Do they ever anticipate a reason why massive numbers of people will start trying to cross Canada to here or vice-versa? Next, we could fence off cities and towns. No, I do not like this idea. Why do we have NAFTA, GATT, trade agreements to bring nations closer together financially, and then turn around and do this? Sorry. I know illegal immigration is a big problem in America. I live in a city with one of the largest influxes of Mexicans, South-east asians, Koreans, Paki's and Iranians. We are becoming very diverse and it is working well. Sure, some may be illegal. INS needs to step up it's internal efforts. I don't see the value of an expensive, 1500 mile high tech wall. Sorry. There must be other, better answers for the problems.

So.... It sounds like I may be smokin' more homegrown in the future ;D
I dunno... I'm beginning to think it's more about keepin' us pinned in than keepin' somebody else out. Besides... if AlQueda wants in the US, the Bin ladens can just contact the Bush's & get a private jet ride here.
There's already a gazillion closed circuit cameras recording stuff in the this country but are they pointed at the borders? NO They are pointed at YOU.

JMO here... The best cure for the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico would be for the Mexican government to look very seriously at why it's citizens are leaveing. Somehow I doubt it is due to lack of national pride! Could it be perhaps that the people of Mexico see two choices before them? Live in abject poverty or cross the border for work. At one time my father worked for a company that produced metal ductwork. In order to save the company money one of their production plants had been relocated in... Mexico. However... (there is always a however isn't there?) The workers in the relocated plant were being paid wages that would make the typical American paper boy balk. Fifty cents an hour was one of the higher pay positions. So, where am I headed with this? If the Mexican people would have a long heartfelt "chat" with their leadership I think they might have a reason to stay at home and not need to violate our southern border. As for the Canadians... We had best keep an eye on them. They might want Alex Trebeck back...
