All us ol'timers have been over this before, & I remember xpt mentioning it to somebody a little while back, but I thought I'd post a reminder. What prompted this, was that my trusty machine was noticably slower recently. So I ran Spybot 1.2 much more often.... almost daily, but it didn't seem to help much this time. Last night I finally had a short "smart"spell & thought I'd go to download.com & look for a more current version of Spybot. Sure enough, there was a Spybot 1.3. So I ran 1.2, went & downloaded 1.3 & ran it again. Spybot 1.3 found lots of stuff & the problem seems to be corrected....... finally! Yea Spybot 1.3!
Does anybody know of anything even better than Spybot?

Spyware Search and Destroy is a good companion, it's a good idea to use both.

i run a combo of spybot and a program called "spyware blaster" that actually blocks most of it from getting on your computer in the first place....
when i was just running spybot, i'd find lots of spyware everytime i scanned....its truly ridiculous. but i been using this combo for like a year and it works very well, i rarley find anything. its a free download. give it a shot.

Microsoft is offering a pretty good free (for now) anti-spyware program (now that they own Giant Software). Yahoo! offers one too, but you have to install their latest toolbar to get it. A couple of good pay programs I've used are SpySweeper and PestPatrol.

I use both Spybot and AdAware, because often one of them will find something that the other did not. That's exactly what I use. Spybot and Ad-aware. And I also use Norton AntiVirus, and Zone Alarm for my firewall.

also, before I delete the cookies that Ad-Aware or Spybot find, I put the address of the website that placed the cookie into my "restricted sites". This keeps them from ever being able to place a cookie again.
(I use IE, those of you with other browsers will need different info.)
IE users:
go to:
"tools" --> "internet options" --> "security" --> "restricted sites" (red circle icon) --> "sites".
Enter the website address, then click "OK" --> "OK".

I'll have to try that. Another IE cookie trick is to set the Advanced Privacy Settings like this: This blocks third-party cookies which are more likely to come from ad servers.
