I started this thread, asking people what their "guilty pleasures" as far as music is. Looking for the song or group, past or present, maybe not the best song or group or singer that ever lived, but something you enjoyed but it's not something you talk about much. A little musical guilty pleasure.
If I have the oldies' station on in the car and "Dream A Little Dream of Me" by the Mama's and the Papas comes on, I like to sing with it.
More later, how about you?

Oh man.... I'm so guilty, they could lock me up forever! But I'll have to come back to this later with some goodies. I got carried away on the computer this time yesterday & made myself late for work, so I don't wanna do a repeat.
We used to have a local oldies station, but it went to the nationally syndicated oldies show. Not sure if it's the same one or not, but that's fun to listen to at work once in a while. The #1 bestest oldie EVER? Surfin' Bird- The Trashmen of course!
Hey..... the Mamas & Papas are bad & stinky enough to be considered a guilty pleasure are they? They're actually pretty good at times.

Mamas and Papas....they do kinda fit into the bad and stinky when they did a cover of "I call Your Name" that was truly hideous. They did a couple of gems....but I think it was because of the uniqueness of Mama Cass. In the age of Twiggy, she was out there in those wild dresses and singing some great songs.
But at least I'm not trying out for "American Idol" with my singing. Have you heard some of those awful attempts at singing? Yes, watching the tryouts for American Idol is another guilty pleasure.

I remember that song, Surfin' Bird by the Trashmen, I used to play that on my brother's reel to reel player all the time, and I had fun playing it in different speeds. IT's a kid thing I guess.

Listening to the oldies station that features 1970's "singers and songwriters" like Jim Croce and Harry Chapin. Also once in a while I keep the station on when a disco song comes on. But not always keeping it on. One can only take so much disco.

I've got a 2-cd Disco "hits" collection somewhere in my cd's..... wooop wooop(finger pointing upwards) I may have to dig that out.! Hey.... I've already got the mirror ball in my living room now.... so I'm all set!
More guilty pleasures.... I almost forgot. I've got a massive "so-bad-it's-good" collection, but most of that is beyond "guilty pleasure" & is more like masochism! But there have been a few surprises... the main one bein' Dean "Tex" Martin.. Dino's so-called C&W albums are actually quite good! They're too good to be in the so-bad-it's-good catagory..... So Dean Tex Martin would be a guilty pleasure.
Another bunch of cd's I can think of off-hand are Elvis' 60's cheesy-movie soundtracks. Some of those are great achievements in unintentional silliness. Songs like Queenie Waheenie's Papaya, No Room To Rhumba In a Sports Car, Yoga Is As Yoga Does, Song Of The Shrimp, Do The Clam.... I could go on & on This stuff is great fun..... definately a quilty pleasure. I made myself a 40 track 'Stinky Elvis" cd that gives me great pleasure!
I'll be back with more later

One more guilty pleasure before work this morning.... The Monkees! They're a bit of a joke with some folks but they did some pretty cool stuff. I like the old bubblegum type material on the 1st 2 albums that Kirshner had control over.... that stuff is fine, but I really like the Monkees stuff after that.
Headquarters is a wonderful album, but suffered some bad timing by bein' released the same time as Sgt.P. So it was overlooked a little more than it shoulda been. The following 3 albums all have some really good material on them also.
The Monkees weren't a joke at all in my book. Oh ya.... I just found a cool dvd on ebay. They took all of the musical segments of the Monkees TV shows & strung them all together so it's all music... along with a few commercials the guys were in. Great dvd!

Monkees were a guilty pleasure of mine. Daydream Believer and I'm a Believer are my favs. Also like the some of the Herman's Hermits songs...The early British invasion, NON Beatles are a hoot for me.

Ya that stuff's fine but I prefer the more psychedelic stuff like Randy Scouse Git, Daily Nightly, Taploca Tundra, The Porpoise Song........ all that stuff is great.
And I agree... all the Brittish inasion stuff is fun to play. Hell I like most anything "60's". A highly recommended sourse for 60's garage rock from the US is Rhino's 4-cd Nuggetts box.

Well, when I was a kid, I wasn't looking for psychedelic....just stuff I liked...and some of it I look at today and think "What was I thinking?"

Well, when I was a kid, I wasn't looking for psychedelic....just stuff I liked...and some of it I look at today and think "What was I thinking?" Ya but it's still fun. I buy a lot of stuff just for the nostalgic value. I've replaced all the records I had 30yrs ago with cd's. Some stuff, like the Monkees sounds surprisingly good years later & then there's that other stuff that ya used to think was pretty cool, but sounds pretty lame now. As far as The Monkees, it's the psychedelic stuff that sounds the best to me (almost) 40yrs later. But of course "growin' up" with The Beatles & the other 60's-70's greats was about as good as it's ever gonna get for a bunch of goofy stoned kids.

Mony, Mony by Tommy James and the Shondells, for some reason that song still sounds good to dance to.....

So.... does anybody know what-the-hell a "Shondell" is? Ya, that was always a good song,, not sure if it's a guilty pleasure coz there's just a little too much quality there! I've always been a closet bubblegum fan. The stuff that was popular back during that time was great. The Ohio Express & The 1910 Fruitgum Co.! Woo Hoo!

They are probably featured on a PBS DVD of those hideous doo wop reunion concerts. The ones where the folks come out using walkers singing songs when they can barely walk across the stage.
The mantra of 1960's Bubblegum for those who have short attention spans? low scoring IQ's? or possibly the victims of "Duck and Cover" of the 1950's. Call it Bubblegum Fallout.....

Also a guilty pleasure for me, is on the local cable access channel, every February and October this oldie's station hosts a "Bandstand Reunion" dance at a local attraction and film it for cable access. THe one dj used to host a Bandstand type of thing on the local station, with the teens to dance to pop songs. A cheap version of Dick Clark. Anyhow, these reunions has a large crowd of mostly middle and old age folks dancing with their sweethearts to oldies. There are some younger people in the crowd, but you see some strange characters and bad dancing, but the oldies they play are a guilty pleasure for me. They've been showing some past ones and leading up to the new one coming up this weekend. It's so bad it's good.

Bobby Sherman: "Easy Come, and Easy Go"
"Julie, Julie, Julie, Do You Love Me?"
David Soul: "Don't Give Up on Us, Baby"
For what it's worth observations: Time has been pretty kind to Bobby Sherman. He's lived a sensible life. David Soul appears to have had a hard go of it.

Yeah, I remember them showing David Soul, about the time that stupid Starsky and Hutch movie came out....I didn't recognize him.
Well, maybe Bobby thought he'd use the pop scene to make some fast money and then educate himself, rather than living the high life and burning out too fast.
Guilty pleasures continued...
Happy Together by the Turtles and "She'd Rather Be With Me".

Rico Suave Gerardo
Seguro que han odo que yo soy educado Soy un caballerito un chico bien portado Un joven responsible y siempre bien vestido Yo no se quien ha mentido
I don't drink or smoke ain't into dope Won't try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope My only addiction has to do with the female species I eat 'em raw like sushi
No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno Si me enterno, you me enfermo Mi apariencia es dura, vivo en la locura No me vengan con ternuras
So please don't judge a book by its cover There's more to being a latin lover You got to know how to deal with a woman That won't let go The price you pay for being a gigolo
There's not a woman that can handle A man like me That's why I juggle two or three I ain't one to commit, you can omit that bit You pop the question that's it Haber uno, dos, tres, cuatro mujeres Y la situaci?all?no muere No es un delito calmo mi apetito Con un llanto o un grito
So again don't let my lyrics mislead you I don't love you but I need you Would you rather have me lie Take a piece of your pie and say bye Or be honest and rub your thighs
Well, it's ten o'clock and I'm two hours late I never said I was a prompt date But you kept persisting that I meet your parents Huh, they're going to love my appearance
Ding dong el timbre suena Tu madre abre, que vieja mas buena Le digo Hola! Pero no para bola Que se ha creido vieja chola
Go and serve the food mom Que tengo ambre If you don't hurry, me va a dar un calambre Y usted seor? Why's your chin on the floor? Sierra la boca por favor
What's this amor, these little huevos? Esto s?que yo no pruebo
Good ol' fashioned Homestyle Spanish cooking If i try that I'll be puking Well it's been a pleasure but we got to go Regresaremos temprano Cinco, seis, o siete de la maana Su hija esta en buenas manos
