There's been discussion of whether Denny Laine was the initial vocal impersonator. Remember the history, he is the lead singer and bassist for The Moody Blues, they release one album that was fairly sucessful, with a top 40 hit, and then without any logical reason, he quits. Five or so years later, after not doing much of anything that I can tell, he joins Bill in his new venture, "Wings". So, while looking through the used vinyl section of a music store nearby, I found an original copy of "Go Now", the first MB album. (btw, I'm amazed at how many young kids are browsing the old vinyl..) So anyway, here's a cut from the album, I'm curious if you think he could possibly be someone considered a good candidate. I should add that while Laine is billed as the "lead singer" on some sites I've visited, I don't have good confirmation that this song is indeed sung by Denny. I'm pretty sure it's not the voice of the lead we all know from later albums. I'd say the voice here evokes a little bit of the Paul sound, sure. www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/AndMyBabysGone.mp3

Well, I do hear a resemblance, especially on the high notes. Plus, one can't discount that he left in October of 1966. I'd say he would certainly be the leading candidate for a third Paul voice, somebody to handle the bulk of the new material on Pepper while Bill found his way. Certainly better than Terry Draper, who was only 15 at the time.

Careful JoJo, the RIAA could bust your a$$ for making digital copies of 40 year old vinyl. But seriously, his voice seems to be in the same register as Paul's so it's not a big stretch that he might have been one of the Impersonators.
