True, but I'm still a massive fan of the Hunter Davies Biography, yet that doesn't deal with that time period particularly well. Interesting though that he does mention that spell of the Beatles history and has a picture.
What is the general consensus of that picture?

IMO, Paul pre September '66.

Richard sent this to be posted on the board:
Just got back from my video interview with David Peel, which we conducted on December 15, 2007. It went wonderfully and we had two broadcast cameras running - one close-up and the other back alittle bit. David was wearing these cool round John Lennon sunglasses (as he is famously known for), but these were specially crafted with "Peace" signs etched into them and with the "Flo" lights going and the videotape rolling, as Peel's head rocked back and forth, these "Peace" signs kept pushing right out at you! It was really something! And Peel had on a slick black netted flak outer vest over a dark printed full-color shirt with a 1970's John Lennon shown in a green Army fatigue and beret - artfully emblazoned and stretched across Peel's chest. All cool as David Peel can be! And above Lennon were the words "REVOLUTION" You have no idea how much incredible footage that has been shot. Peel gives great accounts about Allen Klein and a neat one of Paul McCartney, and of Peel hanging in Calif. with Lennon, etc.when he was an Apple artist in the early 1970's. The behind-the-scenes at the Ann Arbor gig for John Sinclair and other accounts are all also given by Peel - like never before. And all as David Peel can only do! It cracks a continuous smile across your face! David is so lucid, vivid and warm a speaker! What a trip! Plus there is all that of Sinclair I shot a few months back; actually on the eve of Lennon's 2007 birthday anniversary - in Ann Arbor, Michigan. John was passing through during one of his recent movie premiers for the kick jamming release "TWENTY TO LIFE - THE LIFE & TIMES OF JOHN SINCLAIR" (on DVD which took two years for Steve Gebhardt, the film's director - to get Yoko Ono to okay the special Lennon footage approved for release in the film). So while in town for one of his many international movie premiers, on October 8, 2007 John Sinclair sat as I stood, and talked before the camera, recounting all about :Lennon and Yoko. I have other indepth interviews in the works and as a new untold story becomes more focused. I'm hopeful we'll upload some of the footage on to your website as the site expands and as things develop. Just hang tight. We'll keep you posted!

And a bit more: Here's another shot of David Peel at a mid-town Manhattan party during the 2007 Christmas party season. David and his current Lower East Side Band were recent guests of the German government a few months back. While in Germany he stated that he refrained from singing his famous Lennon produced song: "THE POPE SMOKES DOPE" - just to be on the safe side - since the current Pope Benedict's homeland is Germany.

Was this David Peel used as a John double?
Reason being for this question is that the 1970 picture with long hair, glasses and a guitar, he does strike me as being a likely Lennon double...not necessarily saying a replacement, but double...?

Was this David Peel used as a John double? Reason being for this question is that the 1970 picture with long hair, glasses and a guitar, he does strike me as being a likely Lennon double...not necessarily saying a replacement, but double...? Richard asked me to post this for him... He's having technical difficulties with posting himself, I will hopefully be able to help out with that, but here is his response: Dear Lovelyrita;
Regarding your question (reply #30), of this past Christmas Day 2007, I want to state that your query is certainly an excellent one. But you may want to direct your query to the offices of the FBI under the Freedom of Information Act. If that activity isn't neccessarilly your cup of tea, I believe the answer to your question was touched on prior by author Jon Weiner, either in his landmark book Come Together or his later Gimmie Some Truth:The John Lennon FBI Files. It may also have been mentioned in the recent motion picture: The US vs. John Lennon.
But I do know for sure that when I spoke with David Peel himself on December 15, 2007, and captured this discussion on video, David Peel explained extensively how the United States FBI, when they began to profile Lennon in those now infamous FBI files -showed David Peel's photograph AS BEING that of JOHN LENNON! So, the directives coming down from the offices of J. Edgar Hoover in Washington DC that were sent to all the FBI field agents tracking Lennon at that time - many of them likely got sidetracked and probably followed David Peel around on many occasions (much akin to a slapstick 'Keystone Cops' scenario one would think!). And at the Ann Arbor 'Free John Sinclair' rally of Dec. 10, 1971, Peel and his band were the ones backing-up Lennon, because Lennon at that time did not have any back-up band! So when the FBI field agents attended THAT show, which, from what I understand, was the first instance of 'John Lennon' surveillance, it is possible that some of the FBI field agents mistook 'David' Lennon as that of 'John' Peel! But like I say, you may want to clarify this answer to your question better by contacting the head offices of the FBI in Washington, who I am sure will be glad to assist you with your enquiry!
Good luck!
Regards,
Richard Warren Lipack

Look in Paul's eyes in the two August 1966 photos of Paul posted here. He was not a happy man at all.
