www.youtube.com/?v=KdtquPT3iq4Is this the earliest we see Paul's replacement actually playing and singing live? Assuming he is singing and playing live. The picture quality isn't great.

He's using a pick. I thought that Paul preferred to pick with his fingers when he played

Although you're probably generally corrrect, as a (albeit not that good) musician, different songs require different techniques and that fact can't really serve as evidence let alone a clue...

That is very true. Still, I know that Paul preferred to pick with his fingers. I don't know enough about different song types & styles, to know where a pick would be more appropriate.

Certainly lili, i have noticed that it does seem that JPM used his first two fingers to pluck his bass strings a lot.

If memory serves me right, the JPM music, he used a pick, that is how one can play faster with a pick, rather than plucking with fingers.
If you ever listen to the bass lines on the pre Sept 66 stuff, you will hear bass like nobody's business. JPM was a true master of the bass guitar. Just shows that Bill prefers behind his 88 keys.

Besides the bass playing... what a difference between the way Paul plays the guitar in the 65's "yesterday" and the much easier way Bill executes the same song (for example in the "James Paul McCartney" show-1973).
