This is a song from classic rock band Traffic (Steve Winwood, Dave Mason & Jim Capaldi). I was listening to it actually, and it really stood out. The lyrics actually seem to speak to Paul's being replaced. Esp' the last couple of lines in the last stanza. It was written by Dave Mason. I've read that he had a cousin (Chris Wood) who helped co-write it, but I'm not sure about that.
I just wanted to post this, I don't know if it's been brought up before or not. It's really feels like it was written in response to what happened with Bill replacing Paul, and the shock of learning about it. The last line could be a bitter (Sarcasm?) reference to Bill. The whole song reads like maybe a poetic way of retelling both sides. First half might be a hint into Paul's side of the story. Then, after the intermission (So to speak) Bill's. Almost like a call and response. Except the author is interpreting both of their situations.
The other thought I've had, is that Bill had a hand in this somehow. Just thought I'd put it out here to get some feedback on your thoughts.
Traffic Feelin' Alright[/u]
Seems I've got to have a change of scene
'Cause every night I have the strangest dreams
Imprisoned by the way it could have been
Left here on my own or so it seems
I've got to leave before I start to scream
But someone's locked the door and took the key
You feelin' alright? I'm not feelin' too good myself
Well, you feelin' alright? I'm not feelin' too good myself
Well, say, you sure took me for one big ride
And even now I sit and wonder why
That when I think of you I start to cry
I just can't waste my time, I must keep dry
Gotta stop believin' in all you lies
'Cause there's too much to do before I die
Don't get too lost in all I say
Though at the time I really felt that way
But that was then, now it's today
I can't get off so I'm here to stay
Till someone comes along and takes my place
With a different name and, yes, a different face
