It could be William singing to the real Paul, saying "I can't do this alone, please come back and help me."
"You left me standing here" could refer to either Paul's death or him simply leaving for a resort to live off of his royalties (to me, more likely.)
The song was said in People to be about Jane Asher by the way.
Any comments?

The song was said in People to be about Jane Asher by the way. Well that doesn't really make sense. The lines "You left me standing here a long, long time ago" doesn't make sense unless it is song from Jane's viewpoint. I originally thought it was John singing to Paul but it makes perfect sense that it was being sung from the perspective of the woman Bill left to become 'Paul McCartney'. Does anyone have that pic of the blonde woman that was on one of Sir Paul's albums? This could be the girl.... |

Just another song in the long list of Beatles/McCartney tunes that deal with the imagery of roads, rain, and abandonment.
I like your theory about its meaning. I basically feel the same way after Chaos & Creation and some of the discussions held here in the last six months.

The official story is that Jane dumped Paul (or Willie) when she cought him in bed with Francie, so I think it could be either him singing to Jane or the real Paul (if he's a double.)
