George: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himselfSo first George said "Beatle Bill" and after that he called him "Beatle Ed"? Yes... The 1st sentence with "Beatle-Bill" flows out naturally, but the next time he pauses for a sec. & sez "Beatle----ED". And the word ED is strongly emphasized, like he's trying to "correct" the Bill name.

Wait a second. Back on 60if, I posted about that guy, Eddie Addison. And Chris said:
"Eddie was ok. He was just a little " odd "... He knew them when they were young. He states that Sgt. Pepper was based on his dad. He has some material that hadn't been released. To me, it sure sounds like Johnny. I thought it might be Julian. When I said this, it pissed him off. He was a LITTLE temperamental. It was his opinion that "Paul" was full of himself. He knows about the switch. He just wasn't going to go there. He KNOWS from personal experience that THERE is a BAD place to be. He had trouble with the secret service in the past...So, he tried for awhile to encourage us. He also said some pretty odd & inflammatory things. He ruffled a bunch of feathers & was banned... I hope I got that right. That's how I remember it..."

I did searches on both "Bill" and "Ed" on Allmusic and nothing came up. A single in Sweden? ? The only thing i found about McCartney in the Swedish charts circa 1971 was a #7 place with Uncle Albert there [img src="http://galeon.hispavista.com/akostuff/img/Dunno2[1].gif"]

Good find JoJo. The thing is with Lennon is that he really didn't like Dylan as much as everyone might think. He would say that George was always trying to get him to listen to Dylan. George was a big fan and Dylan was a huge influence for him. Lennon liked straight Rock 'n' Roll more than anything, like Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, etc. True, Dylan did influence the Beatles but I am not so sure that they wouldn't have taken a turn in that direction of their songwriting had they not met Dylan. They were becoming much more creative on their own. I am not sure why he called Dylan a myth, though. Maybe Dylan as a superior musician/songwriter was a myth to John? Maybe John didn't 'get' the hype over Dylan or he really felt Dylan was overrated? Obviously, we know many reasons why he could have called McCartney a myth.

In "I Found Out", Lennon sang: 'I've seen religion from Jesus to Paul'. I wonder what exactly he meant by that. Was he saying Paul was worshipped by his fans or just that he had a big ego and thought of himself as god-like?

Couple of new things I found, first, the "Beatle Ed" business is repeated more than once in this clip, which leads me to believe it was rehearsed! (from an Imagine outtakes collection) Not so odd to have a seemingly candid conversation rehearsed I suppose, I wouldn't be surprised if that was done on reality tv shows. Just seems odd for this subject matter to be so carefully crafted. www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Imagineouttakes/imaginetalkingtable.mp3 Now this one is really interesting, this collection has something like 10 takes of How Do You Sleep. This one is the only one to change the wording, and it makes the meaning entirely different. Wording on album: "A pretty face may last a year or two...but pretty soon they'll see what you can do.." Wording on this clip: "A pretty face may last a year or two.. but pretty soon you'll see what they can do.." www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/Imagineouttakes/Howdoyousleepalt.mp3

John and George must have wanted to make sure the jabs at Faul were included in every take. The line about the "fab three" Beatles is an especially revealing clue. Even if they were all mad at 'Paul' after the breakup (assuming he wasn't replaced) , it seems unlikely they wouldn't include him as one of the Beatles. That supports PWR better than the 'Beatle Ed/Bill' knocks which could have been just sour grapes.

This version is a little different, the one I initially posted way back was from a VHS version of Imagine that I capped, this is from something I just came across. This version is not cropped and zoomed in, so that you can see a little better what's going on. Anyway, when John says: "Beatle Ed is number 5 in Sweden, here you can see his thumb pointing to his right like this: The MPG version, The Real Video versionWink wink, nudge nudge, but I still don't get it..

Another thing that got clipped from Imagine, where John is reading a fan letter from someone who claimed he/she channeled Brian Epstein, the part here where he says "That's funny, he didn't say that in Athens" (the letter writer said Paul was alive and well in London) Again, why the editing of things that might be "taken the wrong way"? www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/lennonreadingletter.mpg

Wonder, though, if he had pre-chosen to read that particular fan letter in order to drop another clue. Why Greece? Arbitrary chioce? Had they vacationed there? Had John been in a Ouija session in Athens? Or, was the rejoin meant to flow from: "So, McCartney is alive and well in London? Well, then Brian Epstein is alive and well in Athens", i.e., Brian is dead, what does this tell you about macca being alive in London?----They're both dead.....? Making a counter statement silly in an exactly parallel way....... By inferring a stupid thing (Epstein is alive in Athens), he is saying her statement of macca is alive and well in London as equally as stupid. So, was Lennon amused with the assertion of Paul being alive, or the idea of how serious this fan was taking her Ouija board experience? All of the above? JoJo, do you have the entire "Imagine" vid?

Why Greece? Arbitrary chioce? Had they vacationed there? Had John been in a Ouija session in Athens? Yes they had been to Greece, don't forget that island buying expedition. (July of '67) This video of them in bed was probably three years later. Yes, but for some reason, the disks got messed up and full of errors, I may have to rent the video on VHS again and recap it. I can skip around past the bad bits, but not copy it.

Over at MFH, someone posted an unedited cut of that scene from Imagine. It appears that George's "Beatle Bill" remark was more likely "Beatle Phil" referring to Phil Spector who was also eating at the table. It doesn't take anything away from the "fab three" comment, though it does explain George's apparent switch from "Beatle Ed" to "Beatle Bill". The clip begins at about 04:40/09:34 (04:54 remaining) in the video below.

This video is from "The Making of Imagine", so John and Yoko are no doubt in the mansion they owned in the English countryside before making the move to NY.
I don't know, I thought it was decided a long time ago here that the Beatle Bill remark was a mispronouncing of "Phil". Perhaps not, I don't see it on the thread.
The "Beatle Ed" remark was more significant anyway, because there is some thinly veiled hostility aimed at him, whoever he is.. This scene was quite soon after the famous lawsuit was filed, and all three were out for Sir Paul's blood. So..it's not much of a stretch to guess that is the identity of "Beatle Ed". Also, it's not as spontaneous as it looks, there is an audio bootleg of them rehearsing the "Beatle Ed" remarks..

"He's number five in Sweden". He's basically saying that Beatle Bill is the FIFTH Beatle by cleverly disguising it to sound as if they were talking about his chart position.
I always was interested in John's first reaction when George says, "Fab Three". He seems to be very taken aback by George's blatancy.
