The clue section wouldn't be complete without this old gem. From the movie "Imagine", John and George are sitting at the breakfast table talking about "Beatle Bill". There's a whole wink and nod thing going on here... Then, John and George go in the studio to record "How Do You Sleep". The clip includes that as well as John's explanation on a talk show. WARNING: a little foul language on John's part. www.jojoplace.org/Shoebox/BeatleBill.rmAbout 7MB, 3 min.

I have that movie on video and always found that scene really interesting. Johns clues were always pretty much in your face but george being so subtle spoke volumes when he said 'the fab three'....

i've been thinking, and maybe this is silly but, when john sings the line "those freaks was right when they said you was dead"... (sorry if those are not the *exact* lyrics) it would make sense if it said "when they said he was dead". because, it was paul who was dead, and not bill. so, it would make sense that way. i know that's not what he says, but he couldn't say "he was dead" anyway... ok, it sounds silly, i know... and it doesn't explain the "those freaks was", right?. i know.

Hmm that's an interesting and new angle, subject-verb agreement! Excellent point, although I always thought he was just talking in a "slangy" way, like using "ain't" instead of isn't perhaps. I guess you would have to ask does John do this often, or was this bad grammar unusual?

I think some parts of the song were directed to Paul rather than to Faul. The bit about "the only thing you done was Yesterday and since you're gone you're just another day..." sounds like he's talking directly to Paul - Faul hadn't gone anywhere. The rest of the song is mostly directed to Faul IMO. The line about the freaks being right has a double meaning: it refers literally to Paul's death and figuratively to Faul's career or talent or personality or <fill in the blank>.

I think hes speaking to Faul in his role of Pauls replacement. Remember that for the people he still was (and still are) Paul McCartney

I was suprised how blatant George was in talking about "Beatle Bill" followed by "Beatle Ed". What do you suppose the reference to his being number 5 in Sweden was about - did Faul have a single on the charts at that time?

Probably the song that impressed the twos was "Yesterday" until now Faul's best imitation. Agreed.

One question I've always had... we all know who Beatle Bill is, but to whom does Beatle Ed refer to?

That's interesting, the Beatle Bill then Beatle Ed thing. One possibility, they realized that saying "Bill" was a little too close to the truth, and changed it to "Ed". Although..... what if it's a play on words, Beatle Ed, means: "Beatled", making beatle a verb and then making it past tense, meaning Bill was "beatled". ;D
As for number 5 in Sweden, who knows. This was filmed sometime in 1970, so this was 2 years before the drug bust with Wings in Sweden. (just one thought I had) Could be another play on words, but I'm stumped. [img src="http://galeon.hispavista.com/akostuff/img/Dunno2[1].gif"]

"Ed" could be a "coded" name too.

Long shot. Disclaimer up-front.
Beatle-Ad. "Ad" would be short for Adrian. Perhaps? I haven't heard it yet, so I could be wrong. I'll try to download it later.
Or, they was just BS'ing.

Was Maybe I'm Amazed a single at that time? I always assumed that either the album or the single was #5 in Sweden at the time.

I already read about that clip. So I did a google on "Beatle Bill," turns out there really was a guy nicknamed that...not sure it was Paul.
Jo Jo, could you please be kind enough to print a transcript of the conversation here?

Sure, that could be useful. John: This is actually a Beatle wife fixing the tea for one of the fab four... Ex Beatles George: fab three John: Fab three, heh... George: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himself John: you see much of the Beatles these days, the other Beatles? (Unintelligible few more words, may have been a quick reminder of "four not three" ) George: the four beatles.. Beatle "Ed"..(emphasized) John: Beatle Ed, how is he? George: He's alright, but he was scurrying off on a tour. John: Beatle Ed, he's not doing so well these days is he, Beatle Ed.... George: well, he's number five in Sweden.. (looks right at camera here) John: Oh in Sweden, that's good...big wink wink to camera... Then George follows John to record "How Do You Sleep".

George: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himself So...is the song "Piggies" about Faul? Piggies (George Harrison) Have you seen the little piggies Crawling in the dirt And for all those little piggies Life is getting worse Always having dirt to play around in. Have you seen the bigger piggies In their starched white shirts You will find the bigger piggies Stirring up the dirt Always have clean shirts to play around in. In their styes with all their backing They don't care what goes on around In their eyes there's something lacking What they need's a damn good whacking. Everywhere there's lots of piggies Living piggy lives You can see them out for dinner With their piggy wives Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon. (just for fun)
