I read the news today oh, boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Bill, i just had to laugh I saw the photograph He blew his mind out in a car He didn't noticed that the lights had changed A crowd of people stood and stared They'd seen his face before Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of paul
I saw a film today oh, boy The english army had just won the war A crowd of people turned away But i just had to look Having read the book I love to tell you all.
Woke up, got out of bed Dragged a comb across my head Found my way downstairs and drank a cup And looking up, i noticed i was late Found my coat and grabbed my hat Made the bus in seconds flat Found my way upstairs and had a smoke Somebody spoke and i went into a dream Ah
I read the news today oh, boy Four thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire And though the holes were rather small They had to count them all Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the albert hall I'd love to tell you all
Is John telling Bill the story about Paul, and how he died?

All well and good, except that I don't hear any of those emboldened words.

Well in fact thats what he is saying. "Turn you on" is an old "hippy" expression for exactly that. I'd love to turn you on means -- I'd love to tell you. Well in my neck of the woods anyhoo!!

not sure about any of the above...tbh. (mike probably has something here re: it being about Paul's death)
but....not being a 'Beatles' fan (i can be converted), i have to say that after listening to this for a while lately..... it is simply one of the greatest tracks that I have ever heard in the 'pop audiodrome'....I can't speak highly enough of this sublime track and can't stop listening to it....!!!
just wanted to get that off my chest...... ;D

I think the opening verse is about that 1967 car crash where some guy crashed Paul's car. (People briefly thought the guy was Paul.) combined with the Tara Browne thing. That's why he sings "Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of Paul" There was uncertainty surrounding the crash and intially. (At least until someone made a phone call) nobody was really sure if the driver was Paul

I think this song is about both point of views of john and bill/ or paul
When Lennon sings i think he's singing about paul dieing in the crash and Paul singing is about either Paul before the accident or Bill after the accident before he turned into FAUl. May not sound to correct but it's what I always thought
