There's a line in Unfinished Words on The Rutles Archeology that could be a clue (or not). The line is spoken near the end of the song (by Neil Innes):
I can't pretend to be Someone who pretends to be Someone else Or so my pretend friend tells me.
Considering that the Rutles were "pretending" to be the Beatles, he might have been referring to Faul there. I think Innes was "in" on the replacement since he was a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band that played in MMT. He also co-wrote Death-Cab for Cutie.
Of course, Innes played the Lennon character (Ron Nasty,) not the Paul character Dirk McQuickly, who was played by Eric Idle and sung by the late Ollie Halsall (died in '92).
