I'm still wondering why that cow kept coming up in the movie. I found a book in the library called "The Lost Language of Symbolism" by Harold Bayley, and something caught my eye. It would have been great if the cow in MMT tour matched up with the following, but...
In Egypt the culture hero and world harmonisor was Osirus the regenerator. Osirus is said to have invented agricultural instruments, to have taught men how to harness oxen to the plough, and how to rightly worship the gods. After having bestowed these blessings upon his own countrymen, he assembled a host which which he set forth to conquer the world, not with weapons, but with his music and eloquence. The benificent career of Osirus was however, cut suddenly short by the murderous trickery of Typhon, his envious and malicious brother.
Subsequently the soul of Osirus was supposed to inhabit the body of the sacred bull Apis, at whose death it transferred itself to a successor. The individual animal that was regognised to be Apis was selected by certain signs, a white square mark on the forehead, another in the form of an eagle on its back, and a lump under it's tongue in the shape of a scarabaeus. When found the animal was fed with milk for four months, and placed in a building facing the east.
I thought maybe this might be something John would come up with, but the white mark on the cow's face is not square. Although the mark on it's back does look like a winged creature, it looks more like a bat than a an eagle. It's an interesting book, check your local library!
