I just watched The Magic Christian, and there's QUITE A BIT to talk about. There's more boxing, a head transplant surgery, a Ram in a background shot (accidentally, I'm sure...), wall to wall COME AND GET IT by Badfinger, the idea that everyone can be bought, a brief appearance by a phoney John and Yoko, and even a bogus trans-atlantic voyage that never leaves the dock. For the moment though, I'd just like to call everyone's attention to the extremely odd merging of Ringo's face with that of Peter Sellers in the trailer. Watch here at the 39 second mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaLMsZU6NaYThis merging device really doesn't have anything to do with the movie, so why put it in the trailer??? Odd, indeed.

Don't forget about the pig, the cameo by Roman Polanski, the song about "Lily", the song "Carry on Till tomorrow" (In younger days I told myself, my life would be my own), the substitution of people that occurred on the train seats, the harp, and all kinds of stuff. Plus it's based on a novel by Terry Southern who is pictured on the cover of Sgt. Pepper. Peter Sellers crossed paths often with the Beatles. They admired him in the Goons. He did those famous speaking versions of Beatles songs. He showed up in "Let It Be." He is pictured on the inner gatefold of George Harrison's Dark Horse album. George quoted a line from Peter's movie "Being There" in an interview. And there is a famous Beatles Bootleg of "The Peter Sellers Tapes." The merging thing was popular during that time period. John and Yoko did it for record labels. It might have just been playing with new technology, but with something as rich in symbolism as "Magic Christian" it's possible that it could be something more significant.

I've only seen a few scenes. "I don't know the scene, Man." so what is Ringo and Peter's "movie" relationship? Adopted Father and son or something? Anybody die in the movie?

I just watched The Magic Christian, and there's QUITE A BIT to talk about. Odd, indeed. It seems to me that this fellow played a Buckingham Palace Guard in that certain scene from "Help", as well as a soldier in a tank in that scene in "Help" And, does this remind anyone else of George Harrison: The trailer makes me think of "Help"; this may be as close as it gets to anything like a third Beatles movie (that isn't a cartoon or an improvised affair.) Ah, pounds and pounds. A suitcase full. Only the top ones are real. All the other ones are done with mirrors and latex.

Also features a transvestite Yul Brynner.
Is the trans-atlantic ship that never leaves the dock a reference to the possible insurance job that White star did with Titanic and Olympic?

Iameye, The Sellers character is a filthy rich business magnate who picks up a homeless Ringo off of the street and adopts him. After that, the story revolves around them using money to influence people into doing things that go against their moral compass. And thanks for pitching in, Taf. I was in a hurry when I first posted, but you hit just about all of the other oddities of interest. One thing that you mentioned that I did NOT notice was this: "the substitution of people that occurred on the train seats" but I'm going to revisit that as soon as my gf is finished watching her Sunday politics programs...

My first reaction to the Yul Brynner drag scene was "holy shit, he looks just like Tony Curtis in SOME LIKE IT HOT. Three seconds later, of course, I realized that THAT was probably the point. Brynner was a replacement for (the Pepper cover appearing) Tony Curtis.

Great post PL. The best in awhile.
Now that Ringo is the same Ringo as in MMT, but is it the original Ringo? No. So many clues to get from this movie.

The train compartment switch is a funny bit. The easy way to tell them apart is by looking at their right ears.. Completely different. I know it's like pointing out the elephant in the room, but the obvious reference to the rude man in the train scene in A Hard Day's Night might be implying that a "switch" was made in The Beatles.

Peter Sellers puts on a beard to disguise himself. The Asian guy must represent Paul b/c of the bowler (Paul wore a bowler on the train in HDN, too). He switches w/ his Doppelgaenger three times (3 is so symbolic...) The tycoon doesn't notice, although for a moment he seems puzzled... Scuba guy is wearing a mask that completely conceals his face. We can't tell what he looks like... Peter Sellers is suddenly wearing sunglasses that conceal his face, too.
Lots of disguising/ concealing/ switching identity w/ a serious emphasis on Paul & no one noticing...
