McCain: "When Senator Obama was first asked, he said anyplace, anytime... The way Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy agreed to do.. Before the intervention (corrects himself, touches nose) the tragedy in Dallas..." WTF! www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBAsHTSbkXsOne commenter on the Youtube page claims he said the "intervention of the tragedy". I don't think so, perhaps the spin will be that was what he intended.

He said "before the intervention of the tragedy". I.e., JFK's death intervened on his & Goldwater's debate plans.

I slowed it down.. www.jojoplace.org/Debate_McCain_Dallas.wavI think you could make a case that he meant to say "of" and stumbled or something, because he hangs on the last "n" sound of intervention a bit. Other than that, he goes to the word "the" next.

I seem to recall that in body language, touching one's nose indicates a lie. www.bemyastrologer.com/body_language_plus.html#nose"Nose Touch: When a person's hand makes contact with his or her nose during conversation, it usually indicates that the person is hiding something. The person performing the action is usually unaware of the gesture and to all outward appearances, he or she seems calm. But inside, the person is actually in turmoil. Psychologists believe that touching the nose is an involuntary move to cover the mouth -- and to hide the lie. But the hand shifts to the nose instead to disguise the meaning." www.bemyastrologer.com/body_language_plus.html#spotSPOTTING THE LIAR Watch for these signs to spot a liar in any situation: excessive blinking stuttering or stumbling over wordssmiling crookedly shrugging and sighing answering questions too carefully and deliberately

Well, isn't this what people have been saying for years anyhow? Great find, Jo! Even if the "of " is there, doesn't necessarily change the meaning. I think it is what it is. Who talks like that? "Before the intervention of the tragedy in Dallas". The word "intervention" isn't even required in that sentence. Just say before the tragedy in Dallas if that's what you mean! It's simple English!

Yeah it's odd, plus the body language business. Either it's another symptom of his senility (giving too much away, whoops) or it's a veiled threat.. The official transcript prints the word "of", so well then.. what else could he have said, right? latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/10/debate-transcri.html
