This has probably come up before on this board, please forgive me if it has in the past. Hunter Davies was the official spinmeister with his official authorized biography in 1968 'The Beatles' . What he knows and did not write in his book or what was removed could make clear what is the truth or as close to it as possible. The list of living people who are in the inner circle continues to shrink. If you have not seen the Goldman (Lennon biographer) vs Davies debate or discussion, here it is, you be the judge. The breathtaking statement was Goldman's statement in part 2 about John trying to "pass" as middle class when he was, in fact, working class and that "you can't do that in England." I think if bad things happened to good Beatles it had alot to do with England's toxic class system.

The real crux of the matter is Goldman was right about some things. Hunter Davies' book was edited to the point, even then, whole parts were taken out or changed. Much of 1966 on is glossed over. Philip Norman's book 'Shout' was a rehashing of what had already been written.
Did anyone read Geoff Emerick's book, if so, what did you think of it?

Davies was on the gravy train with the girls and the drugs and everything else. His job was to pick up where the non-existent BILLY SHEPHERD left off insofar as presenting the band's contemporary official history.
The Emmerick book is pretty new -- there were some articles here posted about it, I think. If you've read it, please share your impressions.

True about Davies on the gravy train riding on the Beatles backs. In the interview, the talk about John, Davies denied what Goldman said and wrote in his book about the little trip they made together. In a 1996 revision of the 1968 book, Davies admitted it was true. He covered up the truth. He also said there were many things changed and taken out to protect the Beatles' image. I wonder how much he knows about Paul and Bill and what took place.
Geoff Emerick was a load of crap in many ways. Geoff comes off as if he made the Beatles who they were from 1966 on and that George Martin really didn't do anything at all. Geoff toots his own horn. He did come up with a couple of good ideas for John on getting certain sounds. Besides that, he comes off as an arrogant sort of person with pride in your superiority to The Beatles, their friends and lifelong crew, and George Martin. All this when he was just a young kid learning how to engineer.
There are a few good bits in the book, but overall, it left me with a bad taste in my mouth for this person. He did not make the Beatles or sound. Technology had gotten better since the early tape machines to the four and eight track machines during his period. As far as George Martin giving him complete control to do as he wished, I highly doubt it.

I always suspected Geoff Emerick as the source for all of The Beatles bootlegs over the years, I could be wrong. It had to be someone with access to the vault. Now look what I've done, spreading another nasty rumor.
