Lyrically, it sounds like it could be pulled straight from Chaos and Creation. The usual clues are there, if you know where to look.

Lyrically, it sounds like it could be pulled straight from Chaos and Creation. The usual clues are there, if you know where to look. For so long I was out in the cold, and I taught myself to believe every story I told. It was fun hanging onto the moon, heading into the sun, but it's been too long. Now I wanna come home.
Came so close to the edge of defeat. But I made my way in the shade, keeping out of the heat. It was fun shooting out of the stars, looking into the sun, but it's been too long. Now I wanna come home.
Home. Where's there's nothing but sweet surrender, to the memories from afar. Home. To the place where the truth lies waiting, we remember who we are.
For too long I was out on my own. Every day I spent trying to prove I could make it alone. It was fun hanging onto the moon, heading into the sun, but it's been too long. Now I wanna come home.
Home.
For so long I was out in the cold, but I taught myself to believe every story I told. It was fun hanging onto the moon heading into the sun, but it's been too long. Now I wanna come home.
Yeah, it's been too long, now I want to come home. Been too long, now I want to come home.

www.examiner.com/x-2082-Beatles-Examiner~y2009m10d28-Paul-McCartney-reveals-what-inspired-new-song-for-DeNiro-filmPaul McCartney has revealed what led him to contribute a new original song to the movie "Everybody's Fine."
The song, "(I Want To) Come Home," was written the night after he attended an early screening of the film. He felt a deep connection to the material and began writing the song that very night, according to a statement issued Wednesday.
He collaborated with composer Dario Marianelli on the orchestrations and created an intimate song. As we reported previously, the new music compliments the themes of the film and serves as a final grace note to the moving story
The film, written and directed by Kirk Jones ("Waking Ned Devine"), is the story of a widower, played by Robert De Niro, who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect.
“I could definitely identify with Robert De Niro’s character because I have grown-up kids who have their own families,” McCartney said.
"Everybody's Fine," a Miramax film, will be released nationwide on December 4.

It seems a remake of "stanno tutti bene" played by Marcello Mastroianni.
Even the title is a quite literal translation

Maybe he got the Keith Richards special and had his blood switched out.*
Actually, I think JPM has been more active with the songwriting recently, giving Sir Paul some breathing room and creative inspiration of his own. Plus, never dispel the effects that a new relationship can have on a guy.
*Yes, I'm aware that's nothing more than an urban legend. So says the guy posting on "Nothing Is Real: Paul Was Replaced."

goddamit that made me cry.
Very excellent song, Sir Paul, sir.
The lyrics are great and I feel 'em although I can't remember who I am.

Sounds like Sir Paul wants to retire.

I have a more spiritual explanation for his lyrics than even Paul does. Since I believe that he is not of this world, "I wanna come home" has a more celestial meaning to me.
The lyrics that say "It was fun hanging onto the moon, headed in to the sun", IMHO, mean occultic involvement.
But that's just me.
